Love the flat skin , what's your skin of choice
Heck of a way to start Sunday morning, playing with the awesome new features in Caustic! Thanks much for the incredible update!!
Thanx for a great update.
Weird issue (7.1.1, not jailbroken):
Exception Type: 00000020 Exception Codes: 0x000000008badf00d Highlighted Thread: 0
Application Specific Information: com.singlecellsoftware.caustic failed to launch in time
Anyway, taking it offline with @Caustic_Rej (sent PM).
I just discovered the new ability route any of the available synths/modules into the Modular synth. This opens up all kinds of crazy new sounds and effects possibilities, really really awesome stuff. There's 16 slots available in the Modular to build your synth/effect, minus the ones used for the input from another synth. That still leaves a lot of room to do some crazy stuff. And, as pointed out in the video, you can then route that entire modular setup into a new instance of Modular for even more craziness.
How is that done @ChrisG?
Rej - it would be nice to have labels on the modules to make it easier to understand the interactions.

On the official site there's a video on what's new in this version where Rej shows the new input module for the Modular and what can be done with it. Should be the first video you see on the site http://www.singlecellsoftware.com/ . Basically you add the new input module to an available slot in the Modular, press the "LCD display" on that module and choose any of the other synths you have open in the project from the list that pops up. From there you route it as you would any other sound source inside Modular. If you route the subsynth and PCMSynth (or whatever) into the Modular, you can drop the volume on those two synths in the mixer, having both synths layered (and controlled) from Modular, all coming out the Modular mixer channel only. The video does a much better job explaining it all.
Thanks @ChrisG. Got it working. Very cool!
Fixed my issue: I had to manually unpack demo_files.zip (which contains the presets, skins and songs) using ifunbox.
I got the idea from a comment on the Android version of 3.1 over at Caustic's beta forum, which mentions that in contrast to earlier versions of 3.1, the final release does not unpack the demo content itself during the first run (e.g., after reinstall).
Everything seems to work fine now, except that the demo song was not loaded during initial startup (but this is not critical to me).
I'm glad that got you sorted. It's strange that the demo content didn't get unpacked. And it's also strange that it crashed because of that, it shouldn't rely on demo content (all the default stuff is in the IPA)... I'll have to see what's up there.
To others who got 3.1 as an upgrade, did you get the "extracting demo content" screen on first run?
@Caustic_Rej - Yes, I did.

Ok, thanks. Good to know you're not missing out on the new presets (especially for the new synth). I wonder why it didn't happen for badmaxton...
@djjuniorpops: the flat (and default) skin I created but the other two were created by a forum user who inquired about the feature. He showed serious interest so I said "If you make a skin that replaces all the machines, I'll make it so you can swap them from the app". He did, so I did. I really like his "Blackbox" skin myself. Anyway, while it does take some serious time to create one, anyone with Photoshop and a bit of artistic interest can do it. Details on the forums (you need to register to access the skinning forum)
I doubt I'll make anymore myself (the default skin proves I'm more of a programmer than an artist) but I'm looking forward to seeing what others will create. You could even sell them if you're set up to do so...
There are two more (nice) skins made by Skarabee (one member from Caustic forum): Agua and Nautilus
Man AB and Virtual Midi really unlock the potential of this awesome app. It's just so easy to sketch up a couple bars of an idea in my head, far quicker than anything else I've seen. Honestly I like it more than KORG's Gadget app, although that may be because I'm not much for dubstep.
One bug I'm running into -- when I'm using virtual midi and an external app to control one of Caustic's synths, the first note is a click, almost like from a metronome. Plays normal after that. I've tried BeatMaker 2 and Xynthesizer and both have the same results. Not sure what the issue is -- I tried playing with the latency setting but no luck. Both apps were using AB as inputs at the time, just outputting to the speaker.
Sound great well done
I held off getting this pending AB and Midi - guess I've got no excuse now!
Great update. It is like have a Reason on your iPad.
Rej, do you have plan to add more tracks in future update?
@dubledog: I have not seen that with any of my virtual MID experiements but maybe I just haven't noticed. You say it sounds a bit like a metronome: is the metronome turned on (as in toggled to play on run) ?
@logictree: I have lots of plans ... More tracks is tricky because of potential CPU issues right now. There a few more pressing features I'd like to get out of the way before I add more slots, that will give the CPUs time to gain some ground.
Brilliant update... The potential of this thing is huge. I have been tinkering with caustic for a while but this update is taking it in the right direction. Modular is quite a beast now. Great features for sure..
A couple of things I did think of whiles using caustic in general was....
It would be useful to use negative values for the lfo settings on all machines with lfo's especially modular.
Eq for the send fx.
I'm assuming virtual midi is input only. I think I get why but do feel midi out would be helpful. Especially for sampling. Modular could recieve audiobus input with a way to record and send to PCM synth Now that could get messy
Great app..
+1 on MIDI out on a per channel basis. Supper easy to put together melodies, beats, etc on it. Would be cool to then control external gear with it as well.
Does Caustic have the ability to send/receive clock sync via midi or IAA?
Thanks for the update!! :-)
Just watched the new features video - I think I need to look into Caustic again ;-)
I really fell for Korg Gadget, because of it's very simple and intuitive workflow, but damn, Caustic is one powerful beast - awesome work.
Peter321 just buy it, you won't regret it!!

If you already have Korg Gadget, I could see maybe doing without Caustic. Gadget is supposed to be pretty awesome (albeit for $40) and a lot of people here that have tried both tend to slightly prefer the sounds of Gadget. However, I do wonder how much of that is confirmation bias (expecting it to be better b/c it is 4x the price) or skewed by the visuals, which are more polished in Gadget.
But if you don't have either, it's pretty hard to imagine a scenario where you'd be disappointed with Caustic for only $10. Especially now that you can export sounds from within the app more easily (much like I do with NanoStudio's excellent Eden synth). If you're curious and have a desktop computer, go download the free version from the Caustic website. It is 100% the same functioning app as the mobile version!

Ohh, I already bought it when 3.0 came out and I first saw it. You gotta support the indie developers that make great stuff!!!
It's just that when Gadget came out, it really clicked with me and I kinda forgot Caustic, but I must admit that Caustic does so much more, even though Gadget is easier on the eyes IMHO ;-) (maybe someone will make a really awesome skin now). Also the workflow in Gadget is very good. But, you can't argue with the fact that Caustic is a powerhouse with SO much more create freedom (which if course also makes it a bit more complex).
So, I have both, and both have strengths and weaknesses. Gadget is more polished visually, and they've really nailed the workflow IMO. But it's also a bit more limited in what you can do.
Caustic is more complex and does not have as easy a workflow, but the new shortcuts help (double tab scroll bar). But it can do SO much more :-)
Both are awesome pieces of software.
Older iPad models like my iPad 3 are limited by gadget, where I need to freeze and then unfreeze+freeze on each change.
Caustics doesn't have this CPU limit and the flow is smooth.
Even if you're not looking for yet another all-in-one studio app (if you use Gadget, Nanostudio or whatever), I'd say Caustic is easily worth the measly 10 bucks which will get you 11 different really good sounding synths and samplers, plus effects, that you can integrate into your iOS workflow via Audiobus and virtual midi.
Agreed. I have, and really like both. I'd have to say that I think Caustic is more powerful than Gadget in many ways, particularly after this update. For example, the PCM synth in Caustic lets you import your own samples, or even use a sound font. The 8-bit synth lets you write your own formulas. It has a modular synth so you can roll your own. Caustic to me seems to be a really unbelievable value for $10, and now with it having AB so that it can be used in your other workflows, why would you not have this beast in your arsenal?
