The "poor man's Gadget" , the wonderful and free "Skram":

It worked on iOS 13 but 14 killed it....

  • I’m a bit sad about the lofionic gear; I only just got them and love the simplicity of the duplicat... kinda set me wondering if there could be a sort of ‘donkey sanctuary’ for tired apps; devs who no longer can be bothered to upkeep their subs could donate their code to a ‘sanctuary‘ dev so that people could continue to get them on new devices or if they’ve been deleted...

That’s a great idea, it is a shame to see all the effort that went into these apps wasted.

That actually happened for iOS games. The platform had a bit of an indie golden era from 2010-2014 or so, but a ton of great stuff never really sold enough to be worth the effort for the 64-bit jump. So a group of guys came in and with dev permission keep a ton of fun classic games updated and maintained, even old bug fixes. I think it launched as a subscription service around the same time as Apple Arcade…all’s I know is a couple of all-time fav games suddenly reappeared in my purchase history, so you could go ahead and re-download them and play ad free if you had already bought them.

Seems very tedious and not worth the time for music apps considering simply how much smaller the market is compared to games and how far connectability has come. When I first got an iPad in 2014, Audiobus was THE only game in town and IAA was a shaky novelty.

CS Spectral from Boulanger Labs seems to have disappeared as well.

Gone? Damn. Spectral and Grain were so spectacular at the time, yet so buggy. Prob the apps I wanted to work the most that didn’t.

Yeah the more i think about it, the less practical it seems; basically a bit of an ongoing nightmare for whoever took it on... I do have similar thoughts about a ‘forever in beta‘ version of Blender 3D, somehow get it subscription based behind the curtain so that you could circumvent the GPL App Store incompatibility, probably similarly daft though 😁

Does iOS 14 say "The dev needs to update..."? If so, and the app is still in your Purchased list, you might be able to fix it. Find it in the iPad Storage list, and open the entry. There, you can Offload the app; this preserves your data. Wait for it to finish. Then, you can Reload the app, which should bring it back working. This relates to an Apple Signing Certificate update that came with iOS 14.5. Apple sent out updates for some relatively old apps, but they didn't cover the entire catalog. I was able to recover two apps this way (AltaMail and 645 Pro).

Thank you for the tip uncledave!

But I didn't even need to do that. I must have not looked closely at the error message last time I tried to launch it. All I had to do it hit the "update" button on the error message and the iPad updated and opened the app.

Same with ReBirth - another one I thought iOS 14 had killed forever. Just hit the "update" button and it works fine.

So, I am a very happy camper.

I have filed away your tip in case I need to apply it to another app at a later date.

Thank you so much for the help.

This is good to hear, and thanks for the boost. Obviously, if Update is offered, the app is still relatively supported. The method I described is needed when the app is deleted from the AppStore, but is still listed in Purchased. Of course, if it's gone from Purchased it is truly dead.

    Right.

Well, both Skram and ReBirth are no longer available in the app store and I think Skram is no longer in my purchased apps list.

The moral of the story is for me to take the time to read the error message properly. What a dummy! :-)

  • Need to grab all those oval synth samples before it goes from my device. Some awesome sounds in there!

Did a bit of research. There was an Android version of Oval Synth. Tested it and it works - https://m.apkpure.com/oval-synth/com.ovalsound.Oval

  • Not sure what happened. Checked the App store today and it’s back.
Downloaded it on my new iPad.

    That's good news.

    I really like this app.
If they added external midi in then it would so cool.

  • Agreed. I wonder if anyone here on the forum has the Oval Pan controller as that seems to be the only device to work natively with it.

  • Anyone know if the obsolete "Skram" app works on iOS 15?

    Thanks.

I think I asked this before but doesn’t iMazing let you archive your apps so that you can restore them at some point in the future if they get removed from the store?

Yep, it saved KRFT for me thankfully cos I had deleted it one time without thinking

I have Oval synth on one of my phones but it has the charging port fluffed so I can't check but do you know if I need a full version of imazing to save an app?

IMazing can only save (archive) apps from the App Store. It can’t retrieve them from an iphone or iPad.
