OT: PlayDate from Teenage Engineering

edited August 2021 in Other

This looks like a needlessly clever, perversely hamstrung and delightfully designed handheld gaming system. From what I understand, it's $179. And it looks far, far less capable than a Nintendo Switch.
But the PlayDate also looks kind of magical.

  • So you can only play one game at a time then it James Bond self-destructs and you’re beamed a new one? What if I wanna keep playing the time travel one? The crank is a stupid gimmick as well.

Honestly, I both kinda like the delivery idea to re-kindle the excitement of say, having to be home to tune in at a set time to watch a tv show, while also thinking that chasing that nostalgic feeling isn’t best done by basing an entire under-powered handheld portable video game device on it.

They’re kind of on to something with how to reincorporate the ideas of curiosity and patience into the fun factor of disposable media. But not quite.

They've got a particular pony and they be riding it.

Nope, they new ones are just added to the library.

I agree with you in that there seems to be something in the market they trying to reach, but I'm not sure if they've nailed it. Who knows, maybe the current number of sales is enough success for them.

  • I wonder if I can take the train downtown and ask Panic, Inc what in the world they are thinking. I’m not sure this is going to catch on much. I certainly won’t buy it. I don’t have a Nintendo switch either though. My original Gameboy is broken too.

  • Panic know what they’re doing.

The first preorders are sold out. They’ll sell enough to keep themselves happy.

They’re not trying to compete with Nintendo. It’s a fun little retro toy for people that like that kind of thing. And panic know their market.

They also know it’s not for most people — Not everything has to appeal to everybody. But the people that do like it will love it. It’s a perfect toy for people nostalgic for the Game and Watch games.

I don’t personally want one but wish them luck.

  • Portland. But of course.

  • It's the most hipster games console imaginable. But it looks like fun. Certainly not a replacement for a Nintendo Switch, more like a cool new executive toy.

  • Def not meant to compete in any way with Nintendo. It’s ultra boutique! The industrial design is from Teenage Engineering, but Panic, whose product it is, are one of my fave old school Mac devs and have a successful game publishing arm: Untitled Goose Game and Firewatch, anyone?

  • Not that I’m predicting success. It’s a gamble. But I’m certainly tempted. Then again, I’ve been known to Kickstart dumb hardware products.

  • I think it looks great, and I'm not even a gamer. It's official. I'm a hipster.

  • Finally an actual overpriced toy, instead of making overpriced boutique instruments that look like toys.

    We have a winner.

  • “Is the screen backlit?”

    “No. but it’s a screen.
Plus, did we mention there’s a crank?”

  • @Lady_App_titude It depends on your priorities. I have recently bought devices with non-backlit LCDs, primarily because they last for months on a single charge. Reviews of the PlayDate suggest that its contrast is quite amazing.

Yup, I love Panic, one of the devs that are the epitome of Mac app design. And Firewatch is one of my favorite game experiences.

Its ok. You have safety in numbers.....

This device is going to sell like hotcakes to the TE crew. TE has the oddest following. Their fans are more pro TE than any other fans of any other company. I'd go so far to say its almost like a cult.

They def have they niche. I've tried their niche many times, but Ive discovered, it def not my niche.
I now tend to get irritated just by looking at their products. I probably need therapy because it really is irrational.

  • Looks like the games will be free, without subscription.

You can keep the games as long as you want, and you can delete games if the device memory gets full

  • “New game Day”

  • I thought this had been around a while ?

What is the significance of this? By posting are you saying: How awesome, look at this! Or is it: How terrible, look at this! :)

No. Not even in production yet.

Announced May 2019. Just now started taking preorders

  • I'm waiting for Steam deck, vs this overhyped Tamagotchi thing.

  • wow
How much does the Steam Deck cost?
The price of the Steam Deck depends on which version you want, and there are three different versions based on storage size. The Steam Deck costs:

    $399 for the 64GB version
    $529 for the 256GB version
    $649 for the 512GB version

  • Is it time to confess I've been tempted by Polyend Tracker because of the included game emulator? B)

  • I love the sense of humor of the Teenage Engineering folks. Everything is a fun toy.

This I agree with. I'm tempted by the tracker part too. 😊

You have to be seriously committed to their vision if you plan on becoming a buyer for these options.

This is true, but same came be said for anything that TE has put out. Believing is putting down money, whether a little or a lot. I have committed enough to Steam over the years that this would be a nice accompaniment.
