Koala is too cheap to skip on having it.

The thing that make me consider the sp404 mk2 is that it works as an audio interface and performance multifx unit, so I could record to it or to the ipad from it.

The removal of the mic is a deal breaker for me. But if I was in the market for a new audio interface I'd have a long look at this. Hopefully the next model has the mic back. I wonder how the quality is as an interface, compared to a purpose built device of similar value.

  • Historically Roland hasn’t has the cleanest sounding converters, so I wouldn’t expect too much in terms of using it as an audio interface.

  • Ordered! Gonna act as a sampler/effects/Seq to accompany my microfreaK

Koala requires the cost of iPad or phone though

I will buy an iPad anyways with or without Koala. I have a iPad for a least 150 things (email, Netflix, podcast, etc).
    :)

  • When you do something, there is always a good reason and the real reason for it. Sometimes, we hide the real reason from ourselves and focus on the good reason.

"Elephant In The Brain" is a good read on that topic!

  • If you are starting from scratch or have GAS then
the SP404 mkii is certainly appealing but
if you already have an idevice then why not get something
like a Launchpad and a reasonable usb audio interface,
the Focusrite solo and the Zoom U-22 for portability for instance
and Koala Sampler and you're good to go.

I was mildly surprised that my LP X connected with Koala so well.

Watch 45:50 for pros and cons

This dude being the only one listing cons says quite a bit about the amount of sponsored "reviewers" on yt. Very informative vids, and sometimes less GAS-inducing than lesser youtubers.

Spvidz did a video of cons too

Geez… I just got an MPC One and iPad 11 Pro M1 and now I want to add a Digitakt and SP404 MK2; workflow overload! Each device is special 😫

    I already had a Mikro MK3 🤦‍♂️

I gotta stop watching influencers because most of them get these devices for free.

I have done the same. I think it's because I don't know what I prefer so I buy everything to try to narrow it down.

Yep I know the feeling, I live in a town that’s great if you want a guitar but as far samplers etc are concerned the stores just tend to carry the obvious choices MPC/Maschine so if you want to try anything more esoteric you either have to find someone who already has the item or dive in and buy it.
This explains why currently on my Desk is an OP-1, Maschine+, Polyend Tracker and a S2400 all of which were bought as testers and have/will stay for a length of time depending on how I feel.

S2400! Mate, I'm well jel. I have had a Maschine, 2 PTs but can not get past the price of the OP-1. Yet.

I was lucky with op-1, got it for under £600 just before they went crazy.
The s2400 is nice, makes up for selling my SP1200 in an ill judged moment back in the day.

  • My main converter is a Hilo, so I’m a bit spoiled on that front. Very easy to hear differences compared to that.

  • I have both and love them. it's a fire combo. Before to choose what you like most (hardware vs touchscreen, different features) take a look on the last update / IAP of Koala Sampler. The dev just added a mixer with 4 bus and 16 new fx.

It's a massive upgrade and great new possibilities.

And If I can help you : I use Koala to make beats more than the 404. I used MK2 to use fx and resample to koala ( but with this new mixer I really don"t know), also used as midi controller because I love real pads, and as sound card to rec guitar and bass onto koala). I probably will keep this fire combo, but I don"t use much 404 to make beats.

However, for now I still use the 404 as performance live set because of the DJ mode.

    Hope it helps you

Feel free if you have some questions of course:)

  • I'm using the SP-404 MkII for live ambient work now. But Koala (especially with the new update) will always be in my pocket or somewhere close by wherever I go, and I'll use it as a sketchbook for SP-404 MkII sets.

This is what works best for me right now.

Talking about ambient on the SP-404 MKII......This is a Youtube channel you will probably like (maybe you already know it)

  • I'd definitely say start off with Koala first, especially now that it has a built-in buss mixer system. If that scratches the itch, then excellent. Then again, Koala could potentially open Pandora's box into the world of hardware samplers. ;)

Ooh, thank you. That's one I haven't seen before!

  • I can understand why people using one unit as samp

  • I don't see a ton of reason to not at least try Koala if you're dropping the money on an SP404

  • Ler and other as effect unit.

  • I have both. I use the SP404 MK2 as my audio interface and for its effects in live performance and to launch some effects samples I put together in different banks. With the latest release of Koala with the mixer and all the new effects and the 4 bus channels, you don’t really need the sp404. And you will be frustrated with SP 404 in the beginning as it has some getting used to. With Koala you’re up and running and making music in minutes.

so true, for 15 bucks you could be saving a LOT

  • Sorting a sampler ipad. Will hopefully gain midi from 2 x faderfox. Plus a korg microkey 61 ( I think ) Its just headphone out to audio4c.

Always adjusting because I dont know till using

but sampler ipad is a Koala for 1 shots x 64. With about 8 turnados plus fx chain or just burn fx into sampler. So no need for loads of automated fx chain.

8 Tracks routed to loopy pro aus x 2 with 8 multiouts each. So mpe, synths. A 16 bar loopy and a loopy set to more bars but is for less than 16 bars.

A drum ipad with 8 drum apps. Euclidean. Switch to normal. Tutntable input to any to lay down a scratch beat and seqience with the beats.

    Amen break sampler etc.

All individual out over usb so still have sends on reciever ipad.

    3rd ipad ( the reciever )

A handfull of powerfull synths kept midi or airdrop patches to sampler ipad.

    All Drambos.

So its a multiout drum ipad. A synth ipad utilizing piano roll and automation etc.

A sampler ipad. Which I bet. Although just headphone out. Becomes the most sound source ipad.
