There are a lot of things I really love about GarageBand. The built in samples, sounds, and instruments are great, the string and world instruments are some of the best on iOS, the loop/clip launcher is a lot of fun, the free sound packs are excellent, and the smart drummer is absolutely fantastic. The closest thing to that are the Lumbeats apps and GBs are free.
That said, the limitations keep it from being my go to DAW. I still use CB3 the majority of the time but I do love GB for how easy audio tracks are, and it does still have a permanent place in my workflow. If apple made GarageBand Pro or logic equivalent, it would easily become my main DAW.
According to the App Store, there was an update 6 months ago. I wouldn’t call that abandonware.
Thanks... Now I don't need to give GB a 1st look. WTF Apple? No MIDI FX? No 5/4, 7/4, 12/8?
But I keep hearing 'bout those drums. Maybe a quick peek.
Yeah there are some definite limitations to GB but it doesn’t stop me from loving it. It just stops me from using it for every single thing I do. That said, every time I work in it, I have a blast and the smart drummer is really fantastic. The percussionist and brush drum packs are my favorites. The RnB one is good, too.
As a former "whiz" with Garageband on Mac, I always felt like GB iOS is overly-complicated and obtuse if you want to do anything beyond very basic tracking. I can't keep GB on my iPad because of lack of space, so once I upgrade I'll dive back in to see if I can make sense of it.
One thing in particular I'm thinking about that annoyed the ever loving stuff out of me was how clicking on a track, or a clip... I don't remember exactly what, but it would "flip" the interface of any Audio track to the Vocal transformer during recording. Like... dawg... I wanna watch my MIDI and soundwaves! Now that I think about it, that might be a performance thing, but it was enough to get me to delete the app before I threw my iPad out the window.
I give it hard looks all the time.
Shit pisses me off frequently.
Apple listens to itself
Yes, that’s maddening, the larger iPads do let you see the waves while recording. But it’s still not the best.
One hope is that they are busy re-writing the core app so they can have a unified code base between GB iOS and GB MAC the latter perhaps using ‘Catalyst’. Other than that seems like they gave up improving the main app 3 years ago.
What other app has all these features??
CONS:
Some of GB's modules like Drummer, Beat Sequencer, Alchemy, etc. could be released as AUs. No animations in playback mode. Automation could be extended easily to other parameters (come on Apple, it's just a software that can be modified any way we want). Heck, they could even release GB, Logic, Final Cut, Pages, Numbers, Keynote for FREE (except Logic & Final Cut) on Windows! I guess there is prolly only one (or two) developers working at Apple on iOS GB.
But hey, GB is 100% FREE - including the Sound Library and Loops (even though some have purchased it when it wasn't free, initially - even iOS updates weren't free initially). Out and out, it is a FUN app!!
On Android, Walk Band app has copied most of GB's modules including its design! So, if Apple releases GB on Android, haha

Depends largely on who "we" is.
You can choose not to use GarageBand but to say it NEEDS this or that is questionable. The glass is (at least) half full as far as I’m concerned.
I know I’m answering this a few months later, but no need for airdrop if you have your projects saving to icloud- you can just go to the iCloud folder on your Mac- your GarageBand projects will be in there, and you can open them with logic or can open them from logic, either way.
And in logic, you can export a version for GarageBand iOS- it will make a stereo file of your whole logic project, then anything you add on your iOS device will automatically be in your original logic project when you go back to your Mac.
They do. The answer to this is sorta. There’s probably a way of getting really complicated with routing midi around, this would be an awesome @Janosax question BUT what I can tell you is if you plop down a Rozeta plug like bassline, hit record and then move it to another AUv3 track it will work.
The down shot is that you can’t HEAR it using this method, but hey.

You can also turn off the metronome and the quantization and just record. Obviously less control if you plan on quantizing later, but hey.

Fair enough. I don’t have or follow NS2 due to lack of audio tracks and IAA support. I’m aware the dev promised it long ago and hasn’t delivered but I never saw it as abandoned.
The last time I opened GarageBand I noticed that the 6/8 beat units were not correctly implemented.
If trying to go from 4/4 into 6/8 in a musical way forget it.
I’ve managed to record in odd time signatures and tempo changes, but to do it on the iOS version you have to give up the ‘grid’ basically. There’s a bit more flexibility with the macOS version, but still not as much flexibility as Logic Pro.
