Thanks for following the progress as I consider starting in Cubasis to use MIDI for input while I wait for the update.
I need to study how to edit the piano roll to adjust note lengths.
Another “Start in Cubasis and transfer Audio into Staffpad” and add instruments (Strings and Brass).
LumBeats “AfroLatin DM” for all percussion.
Sorry for the late reply! Yeah definitely open to a dance!
I’ll DM you the details.
I do this type of comparison project. There are 6 String Libraries for Staffpad.
Berlin Strings 0-1:15
Spitfire Chamber Strings 1:15-2:30
CineSamples CineStrings 2:30-3:45
SpitFire Strings 3:45-5:00. * listen for a weird syncopation at 4:46 that was not notated that way.
Muse Strings 5:00-6:15 Free with StaffPad Purchase
StaffPad Strings 6:15-7:30 Free with purchase
So only the last two are bundled with StaffPad? Of all of them I think I like the Berlin Strings best.
On Staffpad Facebook groups, Berlin is usually the top choice. I find it has a kind of nervous energy… like there are some bees
buzzing in the mix. Personally I tend to get the best work out of CineSamples’ CineStrings and Spitfire Chamber Strings when I want something a little less grandiose. I think I owner use the strings but being able to do so is such a treat.
To make this one I improvised all 5 parts and then used the pencil to correct notes that I wished weren’t there.
StaffPad has this Auto-Chord labeiing track that can show what chords you created with the notes chosen. For the final part or two I had this chord progression to help me add notes that would align with the other tracks.
While I wait for @LuisMartinez to put out the iBassist update… I borrowed the audio from his Twitter demo and added some StaffPad parts.
I took the MIDI output of “Funk Drummer” and captured it in Staffpad on a piano part and the took out a lot of notes to save pencil entry of the rest. Then I used “cut and paste” to pass the notes around an ensemble of Piano, Strings, Woodwinds and Brass. This is a lot faster than entry via pencil and handwriting recognition. The pencil is used to erase notes and change note head pitches.
This is a really helpful comparison, thanks for contributing the time and effort!
This effort is a comparison of the basic tone… a valid comparison for the serious user compares the coverage and implementation of articulations like Accent, Staccato, Marcato, Legato and Linguine (you must conjure up some clams).
I loved it, thanks!
Thanks… looking forward to seeing your update to iBassist. I suspect that starting with standlaline instances of iBassist and various sync’ed Lumbeats drummers might be the way to craft a perfect rhythm section based upon a progression.
Then with saved drum parts fire them up in AUM and use the chord output from iBassist to add more players to the section.
Maybe feed the chords to @_Ki’s Mozaic Arp script.
This will be fun for those that like ol’ school R&B tunes.
This started by downloading a LoopMix Pack and importing some compelling percussion into Staffpad and improvising a lot of parts… using a lot of chromatic movement either up or down.
Put this in the folder!
OK… done.
The rhythm section (piano, bass, drums) comes straight out of SessionBand’s “Quartet” app.
I added the strings, extra hand percussion, and the 3-voice solo (Alto Flute, Vibraphone and Cello).
For Leon…
I have this Mozaic script that generates 6 part open-voiced chords suitable for string, brass or woodwind sections:
I set it up in AUM with some suitable AUv3’s or maybe just a simple Piano and record the resulting MIDI notes with Atom 2. Then I export the MIDI to a file and import that file into StaffPad and get these lush chords without any pencil entry.
Then I improvised a solo part over the chords using the CHORD notation that StaffPad can AUTO display. I cloned the solo from Cello to Alto Flute, English Horn and Flute up an octave.
Same process but more rhythmic tapping of the Chordal Parts and an Improvised Trumpet Fanfare over the top. Ending with woodwinds and strings playing the chords at 1/2 speed w/o trumpets and precussion added.
I only needed to use the pencil for the percussion and tempo change. Everything else was cut and paste of material from the MIDI import or playing the MIDI keyboard for that trumpet fanfare part. Doing this with pencil would take hours.
Not entirely sure what you mean by the last paragraph. Are you saying that you used StaffPad to convert your MIDI input to chord names so that you had measure by measure chord names to guide your improvisation?
I really like this. Very well done!
Yes. Staffpad has a Utility staff you can invoke with an Autochord option so I can see what chords came out from the Mozaic script. “Cm Ab G7/D”… improvisers from the jazz world love that roadmap to see what will fit with the backing track. Staffpad has some features no other IOS DAW has implemented. Of course, with that ambition comes a lot of unexpected behavior and the user base is pretty vocal but as a piece of IOS software it amazes me what they go for. I just find ways around these surprizes and consider it’s the work of a handful of minds. They do have three job openings to improve the libraries on offer, the customer communication (support) and online marketing. So it ain’t over yet.
The new MIDI has opened doors to avoiding the dreaded pencil input dramatically. That might grow the sales with more videos to pull in typical DAW types seeking better realism in their film scores.
There is a new video staff and the ability to automate tempo to hit precise film events. There’s also ta Time Staff with frame metrics.
I wish this app had a better forum. The one I found is just a bitch session on things that don’t work.
This forum has a great community focused on finding solutions and better workflows and celebrating our riches at reasonable rates.
Thanks @McD
I thought I had interpreted correctly as it made sense that StaffPad was essentially writing you a lead sheet.
Sounds like a great approach to putting something together. I have StaffPad tagged on appsliced, so I’ll buy next time it’s on sale, as I really should spend some time composing.
I’d expect a sale around Black Friday… but sometimes it’s only a sale on the optional libraries.
There are a couple staffpad users that are regulars here but they don’t usually share any work. Sharing work
is generally something of a “leap of faith” since the hardest critic is usually the creator… how often do you make something
that you’re comfortable sharing and having someone tell you that “yes” I can hear the same problems you hear and maybe some you don’t. Still… sharing has its own rewards and it definately worth the risk of being exposed to a critique.
Sometimes people even ask for an honest critique and lord help them. Some never recover and switch to “online gaming” or porn to keep their hands busy. “Idle hands…”
A lot of the time I play music and don’t record it, so have nothing to share. If I do record anything I’m good with sharing it, and don’t really have any issues with being told that someone else doesn’t like it.
The last thing I shared here was somewhat abstract, but it seemed to go down well. Definitely not orchestral, but then I haven’t really worked on the speed that I can orchestrate very much.
Orchestration is fucking hard… it’s work. I keep hacking away at short cuts but I know it’s a hack. But being able to orchestrate by playing MIDI (or from an acoustic piano if one is handy) does take a lot of the drudgery of notation for complex rhythms out of the process and that was my biggest complaint with Staffpad. It doesn’t make input complex rhythms easy enough… to many “handwriting recognition” issues for me to call it effective. Yet people have worked on this and show great facility getting their gestures to be recognized. I think using the iPad in a Smart Keyboard holder makes the “handwriting” trickier but I do like working from the couch and NOT at a table or workstation set up like a real music producer might do and use the pencil on a flat surface and benefit from better pencil control.
Yes, it’s a lot of work for sure, and very time consuming. My approach would definitely be playing most of it in on a keyboard and then editing later.
More Mozaic chords recorded in Atom 2 and MIDI imported into StaffPad. I played more intense rhythms and the result pushes the orchestra to its limits.
@Paulieworld I put this one in the folder.
Fucking killer! Herbie Hancock would be too, too jealous. You are cranking out some amazing stuff! I can’t wait to get my grubby little hands on it. Although, I don’t know what I could add. It’s perfect as it stands. Keep them coming. I’m taking notes.
