I use Hosting AU app when I don't want to be bothered with a DAW on the desktop. It's minimalistic, but works well and is really fast to set up.

Hey. This is pretty cool ! What don’t you know good sir ?

Til we have AUM on desktop, couple of alternatives to consider:

Bitwig - it's a DAW but you can ignore the arranger part and it's super flexible esp for midi/audio routing just like AUM.

Gig Performer - closest thing to AUM, modular host environment that supports midi, OSC.

Hey man I like Bitwig a lot in theory and from the little I’ve done with it, but how do you feel about it ? AUM clicked with me little little by little, (coming from linear daw was all I knew), but I was Always intrigued and drawn to Bitwig.is it a workflow you’ve adopted ?what videos or tutorials helped you get the modular makeup of the program?

Bitwig is fairly easy to get used to if you used Ableton. The more I use the more intuitive it becomes. I recommend using the lite version for a while to see what's possible. I don't even use Bitwig Grid, but mostly use it with VCV Rack and other VSTs.

Bitwig is a DAW, so that's out of the question. Why would you even consider this to be anything close to our DAW-less king?! You know, it’s all about restrictions, speed, and a different mindset. 😉

  • Anyway, without a touch screen, AUM will probably lose half of its strength. 😔

Blue Cat Audio Patchwork is not quite like AUM but it’s a nice plug-in host with no DAW, etc.

I’ve been hoping these guys port their stuff to iOS for ages…

The problem I find is that Bitwig, Gig Performer, Hosting AU, Kushview Elements, and many others don't support Auv3.

There are a couple of iOS Auv3 hosting apps that do pretty well on silicon Macs, but they can't use VSTs, and many don't pick up AU plugins.

I would really love an app that helps my AUs and Auv3s dance together properly.

Logic, Live, Camelot Pro seem to be my only choices.

(Sessions, a new kid on the block, hardly has any MIDI functionality at all and can't use MIDI fx plugins.)

    Any other contenders?

That's really interesting. Thanks for that link.

Thanks @wim - I will give it another look. I tried Hosting AU for a few weeks a year or so ago.
Thought it was okay but very limited - there was something really simple I wanted it to do and it couldn't so I gave up fairly quickly.

I might by now have an Auv3 that does what I didn't think it could do. 🙂

Tracktion Waveform Pro now supports AUv3 but I’m not sure if the free version does.

MIDI fx plugin support is on the roadmap for Sessions.

  • PatchWork looks terrible compared to AUM. 😵‍💫 In this case, I completely agree to jump straight to Bitwig and forget AUM ever existed. 🤦‍♂️

Thanks @enkaytee. I am very glad it is! Can't happen soon enough for me. 😁

If sessions adds MIDI plugin support,
and a meaningful way to work with the recordings from the "always on recording" feature,
it will be a most excellent app. 🤞
