Beat Flasher
Hi,
Although AUM has a metronome.....I am looking for a plugin something like a beat flasher.
The idea is.... I'm on a dark stage, and I don't want the metronome audibly playing ::: I want to clearly see the beat.
Is there a (if you will) "beat flasher" plugin [AUv3]
If there isn't one - any ideas on something to simulate this?
Thanks

There are metronomes that flash light but not sure if any are Au…
Only Au metronome I know of but not sure if it flashes or not.

Maybe you could trigger something with midi, just a thought…
If you don’t find any, you can use Fractal Bits for now.

If you need something to sync with AUM..
Hey Metronome! is the one you’re looking for.. NOT AU.. BUT..
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/audiokit-hey-metronome/id1492023479
-works in slide-over mode in AUM.. 👍
-Ableton Link.. start + stop
-adjustable flash on emphasized beats (just on 1, on 2 + 4 etc..) 👍
-landscape + portrait views..
TonalEnergy Tuner + Metronome is also a good metronome.. similar specs as Hey Metronome except Ableton Link is missing the start/stop option.. has slide-over, flashes + landscape options.. 👍
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/tonalenergy-tuner-metronome/id497716362
Everything else I’ve tried either doesn’t sync or takes over the screen in portrait mode only..
Didn’t even think there was an AU metronome.. thanks for finding that one @Poppadocrock..
That’s genius!
Isn't that what they call Jeffrey Toobin?
Koala has visual effects that sync with the bpm. You could program a kick and do quarter notes then just mute the channel and leave the ui open
There are two things that come to mind.
One is 'Hey metronome' mentioned earlier and another possibility is VS-Visual Synthesizer.
The Big Host Clock script for Mozaic shows the current Hostbeat:Bar and a running dot display for 1/16 with support for 1 to 8 beats per bar
I just added two flash modes - one flashing all pads on each bar and the other additionally flashing the dot display on beats.
Fractal Bits is WORTHLESS….. it doesn’t sync to AUM. It doesn’t FLASH anything…..that is it’s ICON doesn’t flash.
It's a 'sound module' that you sequence with other apps...
Worthless because it’s icon doesn’t flash?
Do apps have flashing icons now?
OP was specifically asking for a flashing metronome.
Correct.
Actually no. He wasn’t
?
I do appreciate the help ::::: but please look at what type of app I’m looking for; look at what the ask is. Understand the use and reasoning behind the ask.
It’s OK to say - there’s NOTHING that does that. I suspect, after trial and no results….. there’s nothing, which is WHY I had a separate post suggesting to the app dev folks who read this forum that there is a growing market of guitar players using iOS and AUM whom I believe would happily pay for this type of app(s).
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/48002/idea-for-appdev-folks#latest
When someone suggested Fractal Bits and Hey Metronome (suggested above), I went and got them (one might have been free, one was $2)….but neither met the ask. I wasted time downloading and trying them out, only to be disappointed.
One more time: the ask and the use - a beat flasher (it flashes the beat in sync with AUM’s set tempo). Yes - ideally I wouldn’t have to have the app or plugin even opened up to see the beat flash, so yeah I guess it would be the app Icon flashing. I assume the app or plugin would be in some channel and probably it’s output wouldn’t go anywhere. I am only using it to clearly see and “feel” the set tempo in AUM.
Use Case: I’m looping, and my iPad is on stage in small dimly lit venue. I can not CLEARLY and easily see AUM’s beat and since I’m looping I need to record ‘x’ number of measures and play IN TIME. I need to stop in time, and press the stop record button; in time. I do not want to use a sound, like the sound of the AUM metronome, because in a live performance it sounds amateurish. YES - I’ve ran AUM in a live setting on a dimly lit platform, and I can not clearly see the beat displayed. This ‘beat flasher’ must run inside AUM, such that if I change the tempo in AUM, the app or plugin will change the speed at which it flashes.
As explained in the other App Dev request post :::: many multi-fx processors that guitarists use (Line 6, Boss, Kemper, Axe Fx, etc. have a light that clearly flashes the tempo or beat set in the processor. It’s used is both for looping (my initial ask); as well as it is used in conjunction with a foot switch to change the tempo set in the processor (called tap tempo) and this is a different ask. My use case described here is just to SEE, to clearly see the temp set in AUM so that I can record loops with it.
After trying a couple of apps suggested - neither works for what I’ve asked. I’m sure they serve the purpose intended, but they do help me at all.
I keep hoping for the AUv3 tuner with animated icon.
VS can flash on the beat.
@mojozart VS is VirSyn correct?
@mojozart is the actual app called Addicitve Synth?
No, Visual Synthesizer. It’s an app for making music synced videos. Way overkill for this imo.
And in answer to your other question. No, there is no out of the box solution for this. Yet.
People are just trying to suggest workarounds. Like it or not iOS is all about finding workarounds. You’re either down for putting up with workarounds or you might as well walk away.
Kudos for trying to get developers on board though!
Mozaic can be set to flash its pads on the beat and follow AUMs clock. Any plugin that you want to have flash would have to be open.
If you haven't done so, you might want to write to the developer of your favorite host and ask them them to add an option for a visual metronome. The upcoming Loopy Pro can be set up that way.
If you use AUM, you might suggest to the developer that the existing flashing on the beat be prominent.
Your posts give a sense that you think something like this would earn someone good money. The truth is developing these apps is not very profitable. I wouldn't bet that an AU that solely flashes in time would generate enough revenue to be worthwhile.
You can use what the pros use - sync a visual metronome (hardware) with AUM, or sync a MIDI footboard with beat counter display to AUM, or use an app like Soundbrenner that can sync via MIDI clock, wired or over Bluetooth, or Ableton Link over WiFi or ethernet.
Just get a cheap Launchpad Mini, load Drambo as an AUv3 in AUM and let it send whatever colorful animation, flashing or rotation you want to show in sync with the beat. I did similar stuff two weeks ago 😊
As you do that, a number of MIDI controlled Flexi Samplers inside Drambo could be used for looping at the same time, controlled by the LP Mini as well (illuminating LEDs and hitting pads to control your loop recording don't have to be related at all).
I still think this is the best solution……..for now.

VS is a music visualizer from Imaginando.
You could use Hey Metronome in slide over mode with its visual pulse turned on. If you ise Ableton link it will be in sync with AUM
Harrumph. VS is more than you need, but it's easy to make it flash on the beat: LFO square wave connected to solid shape brightness.
From there it is a small step to projecting and recording a visualization of your performance.
By the way. I thought Fractal Bits was genius... We're just talking about flashing metronomes after all. Let's all lighten up.
