  • OS assistance the way I would like to use…

    1) Hey Siri, turn off all auto-updates and cloud services permanently
    2) Hey Siri, turn off yourself permanently

This isn't answering the question, strictly speaking , but I totally regret the minor upgrade from 14 to 14.1 ....Or might've been 14.1 to 14.2. One day I was happily putting music from itunes on my macbook onto my ipad , the next day I am unable to do this unless I upgrade from Mojave to Big Sur. TOTAL BULLSHIT. Fuck Apple.

I’m on Mojave, and iTunes syncs nicely to my iPhone SE 2020 on 14.8, and it was working on my previous 6s (various 14 versions), and my iPad (6th gen, 14.8) also syncs, though I don’t often transfer music to it.

Had to install an update for it to sync with the SE as it’s a newer device. iTunes just said it needed to install the update and all has been well since.

So I don’t know what’s wrong with your setup, but if you have a device on 14.x it should sync OK to iTunes on Mojave. Something else is causing the problem.

FWIW, I’ve stopped using WiFi sync, because a) my adblocker stopped it working properly, and b) it turned out to be causing a huge battery drain on the iPhone. So if you’re using WiFi sync, it might be a network problem if you use a VPN or an adblocker. Try a wired sync. If wired sync isn’t working, then I’m out of ideas, but it’s worth persevering to find what the problem is, because it does work.

  • I can fully recommend iOS 15.1. It’s working great on all my devices, the oldest being an iPhone 6s. The new multi tasking features (the three dots menu) had really accelerated my workflow.

  • Nope, no regrets at all, loving 15.1 on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 8 :sunglasses:
(Some apps may need to be update to respect and take advantage of the new multi-tasking features).

  • Thanks @bygjohn , appreciate your reply.

Unfortunately however, it doesn't seem to be the case. Just tried again. When I connect ipad to macbook I get this message. Pretty sure the update in question is to Big Sur. If I click "learn more" it takes me here:

Rotate bug is back in 15.2, always requiring a restart, so avoid 15.2.

    What’s the rotate bug?

    yeah, what's the rotate bug?

  • I've had no issues so far (mini5 and Air4)

No, that’s not Big Sur. It’s the update I referred to.

In Mojave, they seem to have started (but not finished) the process of separating sync from iTunes, so instead of having to update the whole of iTunes, it needs some background sync engine update. If you install it, sync should work. That page explains it. It’ll ask you to quit iTunes so it can install, then once it’s done just restart iTunes and it should sync your iPad OK. At least that’s what happened when I installed it. NB the installation takes a while, at least it did on my late 2012 Mini, which will only go up to Catalina anyway.

If in doubt, and I can’t stress this enough, make sure you have a full Time Machine backup before doing it, just in case.

  • Thanks again @bygjohn - it would really make my day if you're correct. The reason I have doubt is that I spent days and days trying to get a clear answer from Apple support, and at the time, whoever I was dealing with gave me an emphatic "yes" when I asked them if this update would install Big Sur. Also, the bloke in the Apple Store in town didn't have a satisfactory answer either way, but in true Apple style, flipped the situation on its head to make out like I was the obstacle by not wanting to install Big Sur....
Anyway, one more question - if this update IS Big Sur, then even if I have backed up using Time Machine, I won't be able to go back to Mojave will I? Again, thanks for your time mate.

  • Chatting to Apple support now.

"Need not to worry, you're in the right place and I am here to help you"

    So reassuring....

My opening gambit is always "Are you a robot?" . He passed the test. Just.

But now, of course, he's passed me on to his colleague who wants to know " How can I help you today?"

Billions of dollars in profit, and they don't seem to be able to implement technology that allows their tech support goons to read what I've just been typing for the last 20 minutes....

That’s the Turing test: if it didn’t read the notes it’s definitely a human.

  • On iPad Pro 10,5" 2017, everything is OK, speed and battery time looks the same.

Ah - that's the one I wanted to hear... it's ok on an Air 2.

    Thank you for the info.

I'm very tempted of upgrading to iOS 15, mostly because of Sample Crate.
Anyone knows if Nave is working on iOS 15?
    Thanks in advance.

    Mela 2 great update too.

Sorry, I missed some of your previous posts, but very glad it’s worked and solved the problem!

  • Never regretted any upgrade of iOS or MacOS since I started using them. Always upgraded when first available.

You have been lucky then. A number of iOS release took a lot of dot updates to get audio and midi bugs ironed out. And a couple had performance issues on old hardware.

  • I never have regrets. Lots of disasters, sure, but no regret.
I also think iOS 15.1 is pretty good too.

Unfortunately my luck does not extend to the lottery. 😭

  • iOS 15 finally cured my 2 iPads of the “AUv3 missing” bug that appeared in iOS 13. So, no complaints here!
