Lightening Connector for Audio

  • My guess is that they will sell premium beats headphones that have the lightening connector, and an adaptor will be made available for normal phones too. They'll highlight the better sound quality of an on board DAC, and at the same time announce new lossless audio versions of your iTunes songs. Having Dre and Jimmy onboard allows them to keep a straight face while doing so.

  • That would be a believable scenario. My only problem with all of this is that things plug in nice and tight with a headphone jack. I can picture these lightning cables coming out at the slightest movement. I'm not sure how well they will work for people on the go...

  • Interesting article about this:

Could this spec mean that Apple’s going to ditch the 3.5mm jack in future iOS devices? Not likely. Apple has developed a rich third party accessory ecosystem, and wants the iPhone to be the center of your connected device life (something we talked about in last week’s Gadget Lab Podcast). Suddenly dropping support for traditional headphones and earbuds would do more damage than good in this respect—although that’s not to say that Apple may eventually ditch the old 3.5mm jack at some point in the future.

  • I bet they drop the 3.5mm on the iPad but keep it on the iPhone for a couple more generations.

  • I hope not. That would mean I would need to get a new audio/midi interface.
