  • Hey, I'm Dave the developer of Beatwave. Just saw this thread and thought I should introduce myself.

Happy to answer any questions or take suggestions that people want either here, @beatwaveapp or [email protected].

  • Hi Dave @beatwaveapp, nice work on the updated app.

  • Thanks for the latest update Dave. Open In now works perfectly on an iPad 2

Hello and welcome. Where is your IAP explained? For example, what is the difference between PRO and Pro 2? What do you get with those? Thanks.

Yep, confirmed! However, I am pretty sure that the file opens as a compressed m4a, not a wav file, to the extent that matters to anyone.

Yep. If you open in Audioshare it's just a click to convert the lossless file to wav

  • @djfumberger
Thanks for the hard work, ultra cool!
To the developer or anyone: I'm not clear on the steps from one pattern to full song...

  • @telecharge: In the app it's much clearer but yeah agree it's slightly confusing when looking at iTunes.

Basically it's because we wanted to provide upgrade pricing for users who purchased Beatwave Pro in version 1. They get to keep all the content and features they purchased in the initial version, but to get the new content they are presented with a different Beatwave Pro that is the upgrade IAP.

In the app there is only ever one product presented. We'll try and rename those IAPs so they're clearer on iTunes.

@Littlewoodg: We'll definitely be approaching song creation in tutorial at some point.

But the main key with full song creation are the Groups. Groups let you save the current state of all 4 layers. So the idea is that you create a bunch of groups for say your intro, chorus, bridge etc. Then you can play these play in series while recording to create a track. Take a look at the demo songs for some examples of this. Hope that helps.

  • welcome @djfumberger. Incredible update. Tons of fun. Thank you!

  • Thanks @syrupcore really glad to hear you're enjoying.

  • Good work Dave.

Did anyone ever figure out how to kill of the auto-reverb on everything? Came back to this four or five weeks later and remembered how much fun it can be, but I'd love to work with flat sounds if possible. Dave? Bueller? Anyone?

EDIT: Just found this. No worries.

Just in case anyone else missed how to adjust the reverb (maybe I'm just slow) it can be adjusted via the main volume dial. There's a segmented control at the bottom of the dial you can press to change the dial from volume to reverb.

Still room for more tutorial material for folks to get the most out of this app (and help sell it via word of mouth in the process....)

  • Just a quick update to say that we've released Beatwave 2.1 and it includes Audiobus 2 support with State Saving.

The other major feature is the Beatwave Drum Generator that creates unique beats with a single tap. We've got a little promo showing this feature off here

Glad to see State Saving in this! Your link didn't show, so I'll try adding it...

  • Glad to see this project is ongoing. Good stuff.

  • sample import?

  • Thanks JonnyGoodyear

kobamoto: Not in this release but is coming soon. Will be a large feature so need to take the time to do it properly.

  • ok thank you.

  • may i ask what are the fx in the in-app purchase?

  • Thanks for the work @djfumberger . The drum generator worked surprisingly well - I hadn't even watched the video and had no clue what I was doing - still ended up with a usable rhythm. Will probably check out a few of the IAP's because I find this app really fun to work with on iPhone.

And yes, sample import someday would be cool!

  • kobamoto: The app offers a in-app preview of each effect. Just go to the effects menu and hit preview and it will let you use them until you leave the screen.

You can also see the list and get a preview from the website http://beatwave.co , scroll down to the Effects section, clicking on any will show you a video preview of the effect.

  • StormJH1: Cool glad to hear it's working well for you. Yeah I find myself using it a lot myself to just create a starting beat for some inspiration, especially convenient when you turn on the shake feature and can just drop in a beat quickly.

  • New to this, but seems nice so far. One question - you can group patterns but you can't then sequence them to play back a song? Is that right? If so, can that be a future update? Would make the app so much more useful as a tool for learning how to make music.

  • Lovely FX unit, some exceedingly lush sounds to be had from this fine app.

Yeah, 12 effects for 3 bucks!? I think that's a solid purchase, and I'm looking at the BW-808, too. Thanks to the developer for the website demos - they sounded pretty good, but it's always helpful for an IAP to have some idea what you are buying. The add-on "instruments" also have in-app demos.

I have to decide between the full pro package for $10 or just grabbing the FX and maybe an instrument. The website says that 200 additional "sounds" are available by download, but there are only about 5 instruments. What do you get with the bundles like "Chiptunes" and "House"? Are there literally dozens of new instruments in each?

EDIT: Nevermind, it pretty clearly shows that there are dozens of instruments in the different bundles. They are quite varied, including basses, pads, and leads. A little concerned about bloat - the base app is about 90-ish MB, and it's up to 114 now after a few saved tracks and 2 free instruments. But if it's useful, I can always make room!

    @djfumberger

Good job on the drum generator, I'm enjoying it. I have some questions about beatwave.

-Is there a way to play all the groups in order, from start to finish, without having to select each one to play? if not, then will that be in an upcoming update?

-Any update about displaying notes in beatwave?
Those two things are probably my only problems about this app. I would definitely love to see midi export, and sample imports/create instruments in future updates, that would be awesome. Anyways great job on the beatwave updates and keep them coming.

I'm not experienced enough yet with chaining things together to explain how you could play a bunch of groups in succession. However, with either patterns or groups, there is an alarm clock or "timer" looking button that is for triggering. I think you would pick the next pattern or group to play and then it would switch to that one seamlessly after the measure finishes.

As a practical matter, I tend to be lazy about learning all of the features of every app because I have so many apps! I learn how to create sounds and loops that I like and figure out the easiest way to pull them from the app (AB, ACP, etc.) - that way I'm always using the same DAW app to arrange things, and I don't have to reinvent the wheel each time.

Re: displaying notes - I was a big fan when Xynthesizr added that feature, but it lends itself a little better to that app. For one thing, Xynthesizr is a MIDI controller, so knowing that a square represents C#3 in MIDI language allows you to use it to program a synth note or drum hit. Beatwave does not have MIDI - it is its own sample player.

Also, the squares in Beatwave are quite small on iPhone (maybe too small), so it would be technically difficult. But if the developer can figure out a way to do it, I would definitely appreciate it!

  • thanks for the info

  • @StormJH1

Yes, I've used the timer it's just annoying to me, there should be a song mode or something to play all of them. The best way I've figured out so far is to create sections under the grid tab. The annoying part about this one is that if I filled all 4 sections from the grid tab, then put it under one group, it plays all those sections (which is fine), but if i put a timer for the next group - it only finishes a part of that group created from the grid, and move onto the next group selected. So I'm still forced to time it just right when switching groups.

I'm bummed because this app has great potential for making music fun and easy. So far, I find it easy to make loops but tedious when it comes to making up a song, at least for me.
Midi would be awesome for this app but it's not essential. Shouldn't be hard for them to make an option to display notes as they have made a slick design to beatwave. I found more minor things in the app that would be nice to add or fix but they've made huge improvements to this version, and I hope to see them continue their ambition into this app.
