Just a quick update to say that we've released Beatwave 2.1 and it includes Audiobus 2 support with State Saving.

The other major feature is the Beatwave Drum Generator that creates unique beats with a single tap. We've got a little promo showing this feature off here

maybe you should randomize the reverb settings too, all generated beats in the demo have the same Reverb....;-)

  • I'm with @somuchdirt74. So. Close.

Natch, just for me (us?). Either a song mode or midi out would be winning so that I can take the sparks and flesh them out in a sequencer with midi out.

That was explained previously - the app's sounds default with a fair amount of reverb - you can adjust it on the same dial that controls master volume. There are two "buttons" on the bottom of the dial, the left selects volume and the right selects the reverb setting. You can turn it all the way off if you don't want it.

@somuchdirt74 - I agree that that the menu navigation and the arrangement of patterns into a "song" mode are the weak points of the app. I constantly forget where things are in the menus. Pressing on the name of the instrument is kind of like a "home" button to take you back to the grid, but it's a bit convoluted.

The only other thing that annoys me is that while the app sets everything into the same key/mode, the notes of the instruments don't necessarily seem to correspond to each other. So if I make a bunch of notes in a sequence and then want like a low "D" note as a bass instrument, "D" isn't labeled anywhere, and may or may not be among the notes offered on the grid.

I got the "Pro" upgrade last night. One nice thing is that you don't have to DL everything and be saddled with this huge file. You can DL or delete individual sounds as you need them to save space. But I really like the variety of sounds in the add-on bundles.

  • I like this app a lot and can see the 'complaints' or wishes, but as I try to shy away from any chiptune aspects (mostly) of loop development I have found that the possible limitation of laying out complete songs in a chain within the app actually works as a positive constraint. Like Mister Storm I transfer work in pieces elsewhere (Auria), add to it (especially effects of course), and find that the end result ends up more textured, but the 'get go' can be excellent.

  • Yeah, I agree. Totally acknowledge that the pattern and group thing is a little confusing, but what's the goal here? Do people want to create a 4-minute song with all the different parts and simply record it in one straight run over AudioBus?

If you want to play live with the app and just run something that loops and evolves over and over again, you can do that pretty well with the different pattern triggers and the "Morph" feature (similar to Xynthesizr's randomization).

But that's not really my goal. I want a groove, a synth melody hook, or a beat sequence that I can use as part of a song, not the whole song. Beatwave can do that pretty well.

I don't know if this was mentioned already but you can also adjust the panning for the instrument in a similar way under the volume dials if you go to the "mixer" tab..

I also agree with you about the key/mode issue, I came across this myself. I thought it over after writing that and figured their main goal may not be about making a song but a groove or loops as you mentioned. It is great for that and I don't mean to sound like I'm knocking them down. I guess I wanted to say something about it cause it could be rather easy to make a song or a sketch with very few simple adjustments. I just wanted to point out something that I feel is a necessity for this app with the playback options, and was not sure if I was the only one having a problem with this. I guess I should keep my mouth shut cause the tutorials are not even done.

Sure, that would work but really any way to map out the music over time without a tap each time would be super for composition. @djfumberger mentioned that he was working out the best way to go about this in a post right after the 2.0 release. Fun app either way though.

I love what was done with the drum generator. Good improvement.

  • @StormJH1 @somuchdirt74 Yes the idea currently is to create your groups and then play them back while recording. Part of the thinking here was to lean more towards improvisation, create the groups of your song but somewhat jam on them while playing / recording.

But I'm certainly taking the comments on board and will probably look soon at adding the simple option of a play button in the Groups section to let the app auto run through the groups for you. This should give people a lot of what they're after without needing a full on song creation mode (but still not ruling that out either for a future update).

  • @djfumberger I'm as creative as the next piece of wood, but I also have tangled finger disease so sometimes just being able to hit song and play or record an idea is a lovely thing. Thus I really look forward to the addition of a 'Play' button and if it's a step (sorry) towards a song mode all the better. Enjoying your app :)
