Does the P.O.G. clone work on chords? You stopped playing chords in both demos when it was used. Also it looks like the harmonizer is the fixed interval formant shifting variety. From the last demo it sounded like the Whammy was spot on unlike many other clones though.

  • @Flo26 I'm glad your here too Flo, and I love your work, but as the old saying goes "you cant please everyone all of the time". So its all cool.

Actually earlier today I way looking for an app to help me with my guitar playing and a decent tuner. And I found something very very useful which I shall be demoing shortly.

Also just got a Focusrite iTrack Dock so lots of that coming soon too, the one thing I have found out about the iTrack and its USB Midi is it won't power the Korg Microkey 25, but it does power the Arturia Minilab Keys, Works great with the Microbrute as a midi controller and also works great with my piano. It handles audio very well indeed

I shall check all that a bit later and get back to you, just for me what's the POG

  • I think some people who don't do video work or have too much time to spare don't even start to realize how much time actually goes into producing a sleek video: at least 2 hd cameras, tripods etc. possibly less when one uses an app like reflector. To top this you need to spend time preparing for the presentation, cut it, maybe mux video with a better quality audio etc. If the man does 20 odd videos a month and is not a guitarist I'd give him plenty of slack. Yes, sometimes things are a bit rough but we're talking instructional DIY videos and not Universal Pictures. We really need to get things into context. And even if 1 out of gazillion videos is not quite right I wouldn't personally feel qualified to be the one to make constructively critical comments.
I made some neg remarks on Retronyms video of their Stryke app but honestly, I'd have Doug's videos any time of the year over those. Cheers man.

It's the red thing with the sliders you got out at 4:47. It sounded just like the real pedal, but the real one also works on chords.

  • @dreamless that the PolyOct multi voice octave divider, everythings polyphonic. I thought it sounded best with single notes

  • Sounds painful...

Douglas,I just wanted to let you know that....

  • I like Doug's videos as well, and have been influenced to buy (or not buy) many apps after watching. I appreciate the "first look" videos that are usually available within days of an app's launch. I also understand the "one take" approach.

However, I do think that an occasional edit would benefit the overall video series. Case in point, the recent video on HarmonyWiz. There was an issue with losing two harmony parts near the end of the video, and Doug spent a minute or two trying to correct, ultimately failing to find the solution and saying "It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter".

As HarmonyWiz is being promoted as an easy-to-use app, watching someone who has 100's of demo videos struggle with the app might be a source of hesitation for a novice user, and ultimately detrimental to the developer. I realize we are talking about Jordan Rudess here, who's likely not starving, but I think the point still remains.

Again, not try to hack down Doug here. Just some friendly criticism. I know filming and editing videos is a time-consuming chore, but in some instances, I think it may be warranted.

  • I think the expression, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" applies here ;)

Thank you for providing a very useful service to us appoholics, Doug! I'm very happy you've recovered enough to be able to make any vids at all. Good on yer, mate and good health :D

I disagree, Sean. Watching someone trip over some aspect of an app gives a realistic impression of the kind of problems a new user might encounter. If the app is a intuitive dream to use, those problems will be absent. I'd rather see warts than gloss in this instance.

That's exactly why I like Doug's videos so much, they offer a plain look at an app before it is mastered, warts and all. I think that developers who are lucky enough to have apps demoed by Doug gain far more than they lose. iOS music wouldn't be the same for me without these vids, I think that I'll always remember them.

Could you do a whole video on the Focusrite iTrack Dock, Doug? At the moment I use an iRig HD for guitar, and I was wondering about the difference between analog (Focusrite) and digital (iRig HD) when it comes to the quality of the signal going into the iPad.

As an all-in-one solution the iTrack Dock looks really good to me, but I'd love to hear your take on it!

I tend to see it both ways. I agree that it's good to show when a potential hiccup is encountered in learning features to an app (makes it natural, relatable, realistic). However, showing an attempt to use a feature, failing in that attempt, and leaving it at that, imo, isn't good for the app or the demo. The best solution I could think of is to include the hiccup, figure out how the feature works after the take, then make a quick epilogue showing how the feature works.

  • edited June 2014

I guess different strokes. A huge benefit to me of Doug's videos is precisely the tripping up on certain features. Exactly the sort of stuff I want to know and exactly the sort of stuff you don't get in an edited 'instructional' or internal product demo video. Not saying there isn't a place for those or that Doug's videos don't sometimes serve those purposes but the point of them, for me, is seeing regular guy using iOS apps. Plus the accent.

  • @thesoundtestroom, hey Doug can you use a powered hub on the itrack dock?

  • Thanks for all the comments and feedback, @syrupcore said earlier the my videos are like DIY/Punk... I like that, and it kinda sums up my approach. The important think to remember is to try if you can to listen through headphones, the audio is direct feed, so is always good and has been for the last 150 videos or so, and to me the audio is really important, cant help sometimes blurry picture.

I will stick to my ethic of you seing my mistakes and any apparent problems I run into. Many times a developer has said thanks for pointing out the error or glitch, then we get a quick fix usually. What I have never had is a dev asking me to take down the demo because they think its bad for the app, i would though if they asked me to.

As for my health, I still have ongoing issues, my BP is good now but one of the CT's I had a month back showed some problem with my pancreas, so next week I have to have a cyst aspirated and a biopsy done. But making the videos and spending time with you guys has been the best medicine and me and Jo thank you all from the bottom if our hearts :-)

  • @thesoundtestroom ...another request please for you to feature iTrack Studio as It appears to fit the bill for me. I fully support what Doug is doing, and his videos continue to help me - many of the company instructional videos tend to be either a bit over my head or too shallow. Meanwhile, cannot wait for a professional guitarist to try out ToneStack to hear if it is better than the others.

Definately will be doing several iTrack Dock videos very very soon
