New Free Fazioli F308 Grand (demo comparison from LL)

edited February 2022 in General App Discussion

Dore Mark has given me permission to convert his sampled Fazioli F308 Grand released in January 2022 to sf2 format. His full Kontakt and sfz version is available at https://www.pianobook.co.uk/ but this does not particularly suit iOS so I have reduced it using the audience mic perspective down to a managable 299mb and 5 velocity layers.
It plays very nicely on bismark bs-16i soundfont app.
Here is the download link from my google drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1KEGLNaGQvMLN-sLzD9qFS-wnErOVlJcS/view?usp=sharing

I have also added it to my website https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/ in case there are any updates/improvements.
A quick sound demo is here:

A big thanks to Dore for allowing me to edit and share his creation.

**PS - there is now a version tailored to work well with the SoundFonts app by B-Ray software - see my site

  • Thank you, can’t wait to try it out.

  • @Reuben

    Awesome.
    Thank you.

  • Awesome. Cheers. Thanks.

  • Is it possible to have half pedal and soft pedal(una corda) in soundfonts?

  • Tagging my man Mike @LinearLineman
Maybe he would like to put his hands on this

Good question, but I don't think so. It would require some sort of pre-defined CCs, and soundfonts are really just about notes and velocity. It might be feasible by switching fonts on the fly, but that would likely be too slow.

I think half-pedaling is doable if the CC64 can control the release time of the sample (but I don't know if it's possible within the SF2/SFZ standards).

  • It sounds good.
    Thanks.

  • Sounds good to me too. Smooth from very loud to very soft. And no funny notes, which are surprisingly common in sampled pianos.

  • Thank you for sharing this piano sound font!

I don’t have bs16, but if folks rave about this I’d try it. Sounds pretty good on the demo. Hopefully someone with Ravenscroft/PurePiano like maybe @McD will weigh in on it.

It also plays fine in the SoundFonts app, if you have that.

  • Thanks @uncledave. I do have soundfonts but never downloaded anything. How does one do it, please?

Download the sf2 file in your browser, save it somewhere. Safari Downloads would be fine, anywhere you like to keep stuff. Open SoundFonts stand-alone, hit "+" and browse to the location and select the file. It will be added to SoundFonts. Since unchanged copies of files in APFS are just references to the original file, this won't eat more storage.

Incidentally, that Soundfonts4U site is a bit interesting, I guess because it's hosted on google drive. So downloading the file takes about 4 clicks before it agrees to let you have it. Extreme concern about viruses, it seems.

  • Thank you @uncledave. I’ll give it a go.

  • Once you have downloaded the link and have the sf2 type file on your iPad you can use the "Share" option in the files app and then select the "SoundFonts", "BS-16i" or (maybe) Audio Evolutions Mobile Studio.

I find this set of samples to very much like the Ravenscroft in tone... it's bright as most people seem to prefer. I used an EQ and was able to match Pure Piano by turning up the bass around 200 Hz.

It's a very nice SF2 and seems a bit more intimate than the BS-16i Salamander Yamaha C5.

Thank you @reuben... it's currently my favorite of the 5 pianos I have loaded into SoundFonts.

I wonder how your EQ version compares with the "Dark" preset? I believe those variants are just changes in EQ as well.

    @Reuben
Many thanks for this, and pass on bigs thanks to Dore
Sounds lovely in MultiTrackStudio’s soundfont player-

I didn't hear a difference in the 3 presets in SoundFonts. Maybe it doesn't have an EQ capability. Can anyone else comment on the 3 presets and if they hear a difference.
I'm don't think I changed the default preset in BS-16i.

  • IMPORTANT NEWS
If you are using the SoundFonts app by B-Ray Software I have a new version of the Fazioli tailored to work well with this app.
You will now experience the correct response to the Dynamic and Dark presets. The SoundFonts app uses a different sound engine and responds differently to filter cut-off settings.
If you are using bs-16i then stick to the original version. Both versions are downloadable from my site https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/ which is the best place to get current versions.
For quick access to the new version for SoundFonts app you can download it from here at the moment

  • @uncledave @Reuben, I’m getting “unsupported file type” when I try to download the SoundFonts version. Any advice? Thanks!

How are you trying to download it? Which browser, which device?

Also, are you starting from the Soundfonts4U website, or are you trying to use the posted direct link?

I always go to the site and download with iCabMobile; never a problem.

Edit: The posted link worked fine in iCabMobile. It appeared to work in Safari, but the resulting file is 313.7 MB, not the 299.19 that I saw. Looks like that's just the change in definition of MB (10^6 vs 1024^2).

When do you get the unsupported file type error?

Also, what's your iPadOS version? I'm on 15.3.1.

Sharing these files with SoundFonts does not work for me; SoundFonts crashes with SIGTRAP. Using the (+) in the app works fine, though.

Are you maybe trying to directly download the posted link? You actually have to go through a couple of web pages, where google drive makes sure you want to do this, before it actually offers the file.

  • @uncledave, yeah, I directly downloaded. Will investigate some more.

Can you see the downloaded file in the "files" app?
It's called "Dore Mark's Fazioli F308-v2.0" for me but this is the version NOT for SoundFonts.

When I touch it it opens to a Black screen with text:

    Dore Mark's Fazioli F308-v2.0
    SoundFont Audio
    313.7 MB

In the upper right corner there's a "share" icon (box with an arrow pointing up)
Touch that icon and the share menu opens up and mine has a BS-16i icon in the second slot.

To get to the SoundFonts icon I have to touch the More Elipsis at the end of the row of icons.
That presents an alphabetical listing of all apps that are registered for SF2 file and "SoundsFonts" is there between Sample Crate and Thafnar... what would all those apps do with an SF2 file? Not much I'll bet. Sample Crate complains... "Only Audio Files Can Be Added to Crates". If Share did NOT show all these bogus apps this process would be easier.

  • I just put the file in iCloud then in the SoundFonts app press the + button and navigate to the file. For bs-16i go to settings, wavetables, then navigate to iCloud.

  • @uncledave @Reuben @McD. Wow, finally got it. Sounds good on the Cubasis keyboard. Will use it tonight in a track. Any recommendations of other fonts to download ?

    Thanks @Reuben. This looks swell!

    Yamaha C5 (Salamander)
    Mason Hamlin A
Concert Chateau Uprights (not my thing but free uprights are rare)
"4 Essential" pack saves downloads and presents 4 pianos as presets
    Harps-Strings-Orchestra package

Maybe do 1 per day and do a SoundFonts album?

    Thanks @Reuben. This looks swell!

Yes, indeed. Thank you @Reuben for maintaining this site and coding us the best SF2's.
