Ok, here is a demo of the Fazioli dark compared with Ravenscroft. @Reuben, I altered the post title… hope that was ok.
No effects added. (There is an artifact ng at the very end of Fazioli… not present on Ravenscroft) I found a slight latency with the Faz.

Btw, I notice if you tap ? an arrow for effects appears in SoundFonts, but there is no control or options under it. It would be nice to be able to adjust the reverb/release
You can definitely alter reverb effects in the SoundFonts app - you might have the effects locked by mistake. I too noticed just a slight bit more latency in SondFonts compared to the bs-16i app.
Nice demo - thanks - I think I prefer the Fazioli!
I listened to both several times and I think the Ravenscoft is slightly more to may tastes for this type of solo piano workout.
I could see the Fazioli as being more useful in a mix just like the Salamander tends to outscore the Ravenscroft for more complicated solo piano or in the Grieg Piano Concerto.
The rarely used very top end of the Fazioli could use some attention to tuning IMHO.
The collection of free pianos should generate a surge of effort to find the best possible
SoundFonts app. Auria Pro and Audio Evolution Mobile Studio support importing freely available SF2 files and also have significant sf2 content by default or for sale.
SF2 is the typical packaging for many orchestral collections like the one embedded in AudioLayer. Finding the best SF2 based Cello is a worthy exercise if you're strapped for cash and want to emote like a true romantic composer or emulate Bach's great sonatas like a digital Yo-Yo Ma.
You can find orchestral downloads at SoundFonts4u by the way and an interesting electronic piano too. Spent the $8 for SoundFonts and go crazy checking out the range of instruments.
Worth every penny. I wish @virsyn would embrace the SF2 format but AudioLayer can do auto-sampling from SoundFonts and provide a collection of wave files for import into your favorite samplers. Koala is even faster for one shot recordings.
@Reuben, the effects are not available in the AU.
Those are effects added by SoundFonts to fancy up the stand-alone app, and you have control of them from the "waves" icon in the lower left. But you have no control over any feature of the soundfont being played (envelope, reverb, etc.). It plays exactly as it was generated. If you want reverb or EQ in the AUv3, you can add a separate effect, of course.
And that separate effect can be from the Reverb from the SondFonts app itself - this works for me in AUM.
Latest version (2.5) now out. Includes some minor improvements to velocity layer switching and reduced latency. Dynamic respose also tweaked in the bs-16i version.

Nice. Did you improve latency by removing any extra silence before the attack starts? The libraries in Staffpad often have a 16th note worth of extra runway but only on a few samples. It can make crisp rhythms really tricky. I’m glad you are attending to these details and making the results free. I need more apps that will render SF2’s. I’ve read that Workd Piano does and I’ll look into that since I’m trying their monthly IAP tho’ I think they grabbed a years worth on purchase.
UPDATE: works in world synth and world piano and provides envelope controls and FX.
Both apps are FREE with options to buy more content. Can anyone verify the free versions install without payment? Free player and free SF2’s is a big deal.
I like this Piano! Thanks for the great options on Soundfonts4U.
I shaved 3 or 4 ms off vol env attack and previously edited one note that had a gap at the beginning.
Interesting about the other (some free) apps that might play it well. My experience is that some have trouble interpreting 5 velocity layers and/or add too much latency. I do have confidence in bs-16i and SoundFonts apps. Others that reportedly play them well are Auria Pro with the Lyra plug in, Jamkoo (predominantly Chinese market) and FluidSynth Midi Synthesizer for Android. For PC there is the free Plogue Sforzando that works if you just drag the sf2 onto the desktop.
BTW version 2.6 (including an Extra Dark preset) is now available from https://sites.google.com/site/soundfonts4u/
Thanks @Reuben. It is always fun to make a good thing better. Glad the latency is lessened. I’m gonna give it another try.
