  • Oktoberfest hits hard, it's not uncommon to regret some stuff you did when you think later with a clear head.

  • Hi!
I purchased a second hand Push1 (thanks @krassmann for the recommendation). Using the DrivenByMoss scripts with Bitwig, it´s just amazing. But i find that it´s still useful to look at the desktop screen to see what´s going on, specially with instruments or fx . and it´s a lot faster for things like presets...
BUT i don´t really want to interact with my laptop... When i finish work i´d rather not touch a mouse or keyboard...

Then i saw this guy is using Bitwig on an ipad via sidecar... How well does this work?. I could have the MacBook in the corner of shame and just play with the push an ipad?. Push for all clip, transport, note sequencing, etc and the ipad if i need to add modulations, fx chains or the sort of things that are too intricate to do from the push. Also as a nice display of what´s going on...

  • @tahiche basically it works but it‘s not really good. The thing is that MacOS has no support for touch operation. So when you use the iPad as a screen for a Mac using MacOS sidecar or the app Duet then it works like a mouse that you control with the touch screen, you even see the mouse pointer. No multi-touch, no gestures. I think it’s also not really usable without a pen. Moreover Bitwig does not go into the touch mode. You don‘t get the popup menu that Bitwig uses when in touch mode. There are rumors that touch for Mac will come but that might be just wishful thinking. There are touch monitors that have a touch driver for Mac but I don’t know how well this works with Bitwig. At the moment it would be better to use Windows if you want to operate Bitwig with touch. I think @Pynchon uses Bitwig and iPad via sidecar. Hmmm… I‘ll give it another try this weekend. Maybe I gave up too quickly.

  • This is exciting. I’m thinking of getting a second hand Surface Pro to run Bitwig, just so I don’t feel too burned by my existing investment in Ableton and IPad.

Then I think this video is something for you. He's using a surface pro.

The touch integration of BW is really great.

@Svetlovska i did this for the same reasons. no matter how cheap they (surfaces) were, i still felt i was paying too much.

Heres to hoping 1 day they can make an ipad app what is basically a remote for the desktop on mac and overlay it w/ the same touch controls

I bought a refurbished SP3 at the advent of Bitwig, for exactly Bitwig. Its the machine Thavius Beck used in another thorough demo video from way back then. I payed 1k then, and all is well with the machine and touch, these years later. Since then Ive bought probably 4 iPads, and had a blast with both approaches. Fun that one can produce raw material for the other. I guess it all comes out even. One note: I would never touch a new SP oh my goodness the price...its like an MBP. Ill stick with touch, with one old timer and the Air 4.

@Littlewoodg : I was looking at getting the last gen Surface Pro 8 second hand. Molten Music has been using Surface Pros forever, and he seems to think the Pro 8 is the sweet spot for price/punch:

    price point for a refurbished…?

EDIT looks like about the same price (in ‘23 USD I paid in ‘17 USD for the SP3..
Im a fan of Molten Music for sure. He talked me into the 3 back then…

  • Would a 5/6 not be enough? that’s a pretty sweet price point…
