EDITED - Forum Thread Monitoring
I have been a frequenter of the forum since 2015 and have made nearly 10,000 visits. I have a good knowledge of music in general as well the tech behind it.
I’m not going to ask for my account to be deleted, or say goodbye.
Why I am posting is I do not like the current EDITED tone of the forum in general practice by some of monitoring threads being created. “Please post in the right thread”, “Please add to existing threads”, as well as people being called out when there is an existing thread. I feel this makes the forum feel unapproachable for new visitors, scared in case they post in the wrong place. This is a big factor in why I am no longer posting.
****No big deal for me personally bit I’m posting this to raise awareness !
Comments
There’s has been a bit more duplicate or overlapping threads recently. I think the forum search button is often underutilized. I’m all about trying to keep this a safe, welcoming, educational, helpful space, so I’m with you on that.
Nice to hear from you, Andy. Sorry you’re not posting. You were here long before I joined in, I think
With all people go thru on other forums I doubt the occasional redirection matters. The bigger wrinkles seemed to have been ironed out here… like with the complete absence of political threads….
but, I guess, a few quirks remain.
I think we should just post everything in the Drambo thread.
I think that’s common to a lot of forums, and have never thought of it as something that would prevent people from posting as the tone always seems respectful.
Frankly, this forum is well behaved and mostly has socially capable people posting. Check out somewhere like the KVR Audio forum and you’ll see what things are like on a forum where posters are consistently rude, arrogant, and out of control.
OP, was it necessary to create this thread? Next time please post this in an existing thread.
We really need a humor font and all we have is these silly happy faces.
The vintage forums have warmer tone.
^ There it is! The smart-ass joke I was trying to come up with but couldn't quite pull together. 👍🏼
Go on then.
What’s stopping ya. 😁
It's good to hear from you mate.
In my opinion, if someone is not being a dick about it, I think gentle redirection isn't the worst thing in the world.
I've been to music forums that are far worse. One time in 2010 I went to dubstepforum, asked how Datsik and Excision made the bass to "Swagga", and suddenly got bombarded and chewed out by a virtual mob of hateful og dubstep purist twats calling me everything from "r*tard" to "troll" and telling me to "get the fuck out of here", even though NOWHERE in the forum rules did it state not to ask about recreating that bass. (I'm half-joking, but it did happen.)
In fact, the Audiobus forum has been pretty much the best, friendliest, and tamest music forum I've encountered online. Even most of the heated tit-for-tat political flamewars weren't as intense on this forum as in, say, Looptalk and KVR. 🤣
Nah. Half the fun is just throwing it out there and watching the misunderstandings multiply.
Now we’re talkin
That said, I do kinda feel bad these days when someone truly gets offended by something I meant as good natured fun. But I'm learning to apologize and move on, trying to remember not to do that to them again, whether they accept the apology or not.
This forum sure has changed since 2015. Not sure in what direction but I find myself heading for the BeepStreet forum when I get that itch. It has that small local joint feel about it. Perhaps what AB forum used to be like.
I’m getting sentimental…😅🥲
Drambo can even do "forums"?

LMAO
Good lord try moderating the Ableton forums if you think this place is bad
This place is my happy spot, I pretty much always get good vibes here unless people start talking about politics and world views. I just ignore those then.
There are worse forums.
I’ve been tempted to ‘leave” loads of times. But this is pretty much the last remaining ‘social media’ thing I participate in. Apologies to those that would rather I’d quit them all :-)
And to be honest I think the tone, generally, has improved of late — at least in the threads I’ve poked at. Recently there were a dew threads where people seemed to enjoy piling in on anybody that posted something in the least bit contentious but hopefully that’s abated. luckily I’ve not been on the receiving end but it’s not nice to see.
My current pet peeve is the ‘holier than though’ beta tester that thinks working for a developer, for free, somehow makes them better than the rest of us… keep it under wraps until it’s released please. It’s not clever and I’m not impressed. :-)
This forum is one of the most helpful, easiest-to-participate etc., that I have been part of.
I have no complaints on attitudes or ‘tone warmth’. For such a large & diverse group, I think things run remarkably smooth here. We are lucky to have it available; it is very uncommon in forums like this to have such relative peace & harmony among members.
The last time I joined a forum, it was a prominent long-time group for players of Irish low whistles & flutes.
Before posting, I spent a few weeks watching, reading old posts & threads, just to get a feel. Finally, when someone started a thread asking for opinions on a new make of whistle, (a whistle I had just bought), I watched the replies for several days, and after a few dozen ramblings unrelated to the OP, I replied, stating it was a fine-playing, high-quality professional whistle. I was immediately attacked for my comments, told that there was no such thing as a ‘professional’ whistle, and that my statements were ‘pointless’… wow, I was stung. I voiced my dismay, asking why I was being attacked when my post was one of the only ‘on-topic’ replies. The moderator removed my posts, but left my attackers alone. My very first & last post to that forum.
^ flagged for attention seeking (every whistling person)
User name checks out. 😆
@AndyPlankton I hope you’re keeping well. Sometimes the little things can irk us. I agree with the others, this forum is pretty respectful IMO. I think my biggest criticism of it is it can get a bit bumbling, if you know what I mean? I think I get what you’re saying though. You want to see ABF keep its easy going feel. I’m all for that.
Agreed—this place has the least amount of weird vibes, name-calling, and tone-policing by petty martinets of any other music forum I’ve looked into. I don’t even mind people fighting about politics; it’s easy to skip past. I give credit to Michael for being a chill dude.
I'm aware this comment is not going to help the OP, but this is such a great, relaxed forum. 👍
My theory is the... er, mature member base has a lot to do with it. Not that age is a guarantee for anything, but I think in many ways we're just too old for the shit that's going on in a lot of other places. 🤷 I for one don't mind some caretaking happening, it helps keep things a bit tidy and more usable.
Given that this is mainly a sea of goofy avatars and silly monickers all this just becomes an impersonal swarm of ‘something on the internet typed something…’. Sure I had a couple righteous gatekeeper, moral guardian types DM me a couple times when I was maybe having too much fun, but eh, this ain’t really me here so who cares anyway?
This is AudioGus… bite me bitches! .|.
The world is a harsh place for some people. If this forum beats you up then the real world might have its challenges.
The complaint @AndyPlankton lists also registers with me and it relates to the custom of maintaining threads around an app or a topic but most often under a headline that's painfully misleading like:
Just posted on Facebook... (from 2021)
Thumbjam Update... (from 2020)
Then you open a thread with a better headline and someone suggests this issue is under active conversation on one of these zombie threads.
The cost of a new thread is cheap since the database consumption in the same. Threads that span years are often opened and responded to as if the OP request is current. It's a problem and annoying and the only fix is to request that everyone allow new threads even if there seems to be duplication or added confusion to the organization of database details. If it bother you create a comment that threads to the prior thread but allow the current (shorter and more succinct to the current discussion) thread to thrive and not be squashed.
Just my opinion and I think the essential message @AndyPlankton was trying to convey. He's irritated and being called out for posting new threads around older apps that might have threads that span 10-100 pages. The effort to get to the end and look back to the more recent date tags is a real pain and makes the forum a lot less useful to post something and start a relevant conversation to get advice or commentary.
If I have resonated with the @AndyPlankton OP comment then I hope he clarifies his intention. It's not "tone" he's bringing up as much as it is "hall monitoring" of the database organization that a forum represents. The search function is yet another conversation... if you use the right keywords it's great sonic it's based on Google Search it will find it.
Aside from a few almost trolling threads this place is the best.
Even the political threads are generally enlightening, sometimes frustrating, but usually self moderating until it’s needed to be closed for everyone’s sake as the conversations have devolved into circular logic or just plain intransigence bordering on name calling. But, that happen rarely and those members remain on good behavior in other threads.
Thankfully people here can compartmentalize. Twitter is where I got to “vent” but sometimes the world’s problems are big enough to warrant talk even in these corners. Usually some music gets mixed in so it’s at least relevant.
My pet peeves are price bitching and endless “feature requests” which are sometimes just whinging about why the app doesn’t work to the ONE users expectations.
I reiterate, I love this place. It helps me keep my sanity and the members here are VERY compassionate (and passionate)
Brilliant forum, this. First place I go to on the net every day.
