You just watched "Lisey's Story", didn't you?
What about the modern Portastudio?
https://tascam.com/us/product/model_12/top
Yeah, i was looking the Zoom R8 which is perfect for what i was looking for. But i guess the main idea is to be lighter in equipment and i know that the iPad CAN do that.
BUT, i think that having an equipment just for "recording/editing" could be cool, and have the iPad as "main sound source" with multiples sounds/seq/drums. In this moment idk if i can afford it.
Thanks btw for the TASCAM, in my country is quite expensive that Model6/12. Maybe for that money i can buy something lighter and easy to use (?)
There’s the Tascam DP series
And the Boss BR series
Both pocket sized multi track recorders
Oh, I didn't even know that one. Thanks!
Oh jeez guys these just arrived yesterday
And I got this from an online auction, it arrived Saturday
I hope to clean them up today!
I still have my Alesis HR-16 and Tascam 424, both in perfect working condition. Those exact models. I never bought the MMT-8. Do you mind if I ask how much you paid?
Awesome! some iPad + Tascam video or music would be nice to hear
Sure, these prices include the shipping costs and tax for each item.
The Alesis HR-16 $232 usd
The Alesis MMT-8 $166 usd
The Tascam 424 $230 usd
I have also paid 12.95 for a power supply for the Tascam
I’ve got that Tascam 424 in the attic. During the 90s I accidentally broke the cassette lid (easy to do - the moulded spike that catches it shut is prone to being knocked off) and bought a replacement lid from the company’s UK offices here.
Back in the 90s for a brief period while moving, and having had to sell most of my big studio gear, I had an MMT8 and HR16B (the black one with more dance-ey drums) and together with an Oberheim Matrix 1000 and Tascam FSK tape sync thing and a Yamaha QY10 or 20. That was my most minimal studio (no computer) for a while. I produced some of my most creative stuff.
I completely understand where the OP is coming from. I have too many options:
2 desktop DAW's
Two desktop computers
A laptop computer
6 IOS Daws
3 iPads
Countless IOS Synths and effects
Multiple hardware synths and drum machines
Multiple hardware sequencers
Oh and Lots of GAS!
It can be overwhelming, I can forget details of one daw after using another for while and that is frustrating. Where do I invest my time for my workflow?
It can be easy to dive down the deep rabbit hole of drambo, loopy pro, AUM without finishing anything!
So by limiting the options it forces us to use "what we have" within those limitations
It partially why I bought the Tascam 424 (which I cleaned up last night and it works!)
The Alesis HR-16 drum machine and the MMT-8
I say partially because... GAS
The plan is to record only 4-6 track instrumentals using one sequencer, one drum machine and 1-3 synths.
There may not be a current 424 IOS app available but...
Jakob Haq has created a wonderful tutorial video emulating a "mackie" hardware mixer using AUM
I was not really using AUM because I didn't really "get it" until I used Jakob's technique.
Now it is the only way I use AUM I love it! I saved it to use as a template and just switch out IOS synths and drum apps as needed
Just limit your tracks to 4. You can "Bounce" by bussing the channels "Tracks"
The record function is as simple as is gets. This is my "Poor Man's" version of an IOS 4 track recorder
I know, I know, it does not have the asthestic of a Tascam 424 and that aesthetic is a big part of the workflow and joy of of working with one. Hence why I just bought a 424!
I, like you was wanting an IOS version. I saw the original Tascam portastudio app got real excited went to the App Store and got real disappointed.
I see you have a mock up, do you have the programming skill to make it? I sure as hell do not but if you make it I will buy it!
Broken lid, you say?
That's why sometimes I just like to rock my Yamaha QY-70 + SP-404 or Boss Micro BR
Or someting simpler, like a pocket operator or kaossilator and the sampler/recorder
Even in iOS, sometimes I decide to focus only on one app (generally Beatmaker 3 acting as a multitrack recorder as I do with my 404... gonna try today something similar with Gadget)
I don’t know about dc recording, envelope follower in a DAW, etc (I assume that’s related to modular synth type stuff), but auria is a pretty straightforward mixing board/ tape machine paradigm. Can it do daw editing, time warping, and things like that? Absolutely, not nothing is stopping you from just using it as a “tape machine.”
I know some people find auria confusing, but to me it makes a lot of sense. I don’t use it as my primary platform anymore but I do use it. Is especially convenient when I want to check out multitrack files I find online while riding on the bus into the city. Less to deal with than using my laptop, plus on a moving bus touchscreen is nicer. When I bring my trackball and try to edit in logic on the bus, I usually just wind up frustrated!
Audio evolution mobile might appeal to you as well. It’s very capable, although I find the layout a little tougher for easy workflow than auria, which just feels like using a mixer.
I remember that portastudio app. Too bad I didn’t purchase it then, because I have an original iPad that still runs some music apps. Although last time I tried it everything was crashing so I don’t know if it’s still viable, even though nothing was updated.
What a nice fucking answer
)) Thanks a lot.
Maybe we can do some "4-6 track battle songs/beats" with a specific template here in the forum? haha
That's exactly what i was trying to get at the beggining of the post. Easy iOS Workflow..... because there's tons of albums we love they used 4-8-12-16 tracks. Isn't too limiting at the end i guess....
And thanks for the video
will check it (i saw it once but a bit "hurry")
FWIW there’s an app called Fourtrack which is exactly what it says. Old app, though, not updated recently, and I’ve never used it. Seems to be rock bottom basic, though.
TBH a better bet might be Multitrack DAW, which rarely gets mentioned, as it’s audio only (no MIDI). But it’s really good at what it does, and you can be as minimalist as you like WRT plug-ins etc.
This looks fun. Desktop only:

Quick test on one of my tracks:
OMG. I did everything I could to get away from these tape-based limitations and now people want them back? Madness.
It's a Mad Mad World!
I remember buying it when it first came out - "state of the art" in audio apps back then

It’d be great to have a an iOS app + dedicated hardware controller for this. I keep wishing they made dedicated app + controller combos. iPad as screen + software and full hands on control. You could make a Drambo Digitakt, a porta studio, a Maschine.
It’s probably not a market-wise solution because it’s not happening but I’d love to see this happen at some point.
I own the R8 and it is a great device. It is a harddisk recorder, phrase/loop sampler, guitar multi fx, drumcomputer, and audio interface (for Ipad) in one package.
When used stand alone, you can program a drum beat, and start recording other instruments.
It has guitar fx on board so you can use it as a solo device. The mic preamps are descent. With some tweaking the efx and amp sim can sound good too. The real beauty is the lineair recording, just let the music flow and play your parts.
And watch out for other recorders, most have an own file system, and you can not access files directly. You need to decode the files to read, move and copy them. The R8 had direct access to the file system.
Auria and a mackie controller (mackie, behringer x-touch, etc) would do this.
