    It is hilariously absurd.
Did Philip Roth secure a writing gig in the afterlife?

Hopefully it’s not loud near the coast, or there might be a port noise complaint.

It easily rivals “And The Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks”

    Where is that from, Jeff?

I don't see anything funny about this either. The car company will absorb this loss, as will the workers at the Porsche factories, mostly in terms of lost labor. Porsche vehicles are hand-built by craftspeople who care about what they make. This is the equivalent of a museum of fine art being burned to the ground.

I looked it up: Only 272,162 of their vehicles are made a year. One more reason why they're so expensive. They're expensive because they are quality built, unlike the usual POS cars found on the roads.

Meanwhile I've clocked 271,645 on my 2005 Ford Escape that cost under $20,000 new and on which I've spent less than $1,000 in repairs, which I guess you think is a POS, shoddily built by clumsy dorks who don't give a crap about what they make. :D

... oh and I've also gotten back a sizable portion of what I paid for the vehicle in returns on my Ford shares in the last year or so. B)

Good motoring! I’ve clocked 245,000 on my 2005 Ford Focus so far which I bought for just £3,000. And yeah, very little repair and maintenance required over the years. 2005 must have been a particularly good year! I bought it in 2010 with 73,000 on the clock. Still showing no signs of stopping! 😃

Turns out for some people buying a car is not one of the worst investments after all 👌

I’m glad someone got that. After I wrote it I wondered if it might be a little obscure…

And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is a novel by Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. It was written in 1945, and remained unpublished in complete form until 2008.
The book's title allegedly comes from a news broadcast, heard by Burroughs, about a fire at a circus during which the announcer broke into hysterics on reading the line.
That was [from] a radio broadcast that came over when we were writing the book. There had been a circus fire and I remember this phrase came through on the radio: 'And the hippos were boiled in their tanks!' So we used that as the title.

I’m thinking “189 burning Bentleys” would make an excellent lyric — if not a proper song title!

    Run with it, Lineman!

Of course you must begin the piece with that incredible quote:

“My car is now adrift, possibly on fire, in the middle of the ocean“

    🙌🙌🤟🤟👏👏

Wow @JeffChasteen, that is too terrific. Not to mention you just went up a notch on my erudition gauge. Good work, my man!

(I hope all that boiled hippo didn’t go to waste… could have made several tons of hippo-frites… but then again there’s never been a shortage of that, has there?)

  • At some point in your life you will learn that it hurts to laugh. But you’ll have very little change control over it. Comedians “kill” and get asked back. Comedians die on stage and do not. Good to see @LinearLineman can find something to brighten his mood. Getting old is something you really should plan for. Save the booze and such for when you are really going to need to self-medicate. Better yet… buy fast cars.

  • Those poor little hippos.

Fast cars are better enjoyed in middle age. ;)

How’s this… the guy in charge of the oncoming US truck convoy to clog up the D.C. Beltway…..
Fred Bolus. It’s getting better and better. Soon @McD will wake up and this will all disappear… cause this is HIS sense of humor… I know it.

    Definition
    _Noun

bolus m (plural bolussen, diminutive bolusje n)

A sweet, soft pastry containing cinnamon from Zeeland, originating from European Jewish cuisine._

I’d be a little less critical of a person’s name than what they say or do. A person has no choice in the matter and they should be proud of whoever they are.

No, that was regarding political matters. I agreed to that much. Your posts are here on a public forum. Don’t be a baby.

OK. This is getting personal. Mike needs some space right now and it has nothing to do with you. It's a health issue in his family.

@NeuM, it’s not my site, but it is my thread. I asked you kindly to leave me be. But you prefer to act like a bully. .. retract that… you are a bully.. masquerading as a participant. But you are always alone.

You are hereby and forever ignored.

You mean it wasn’t personal when he attacked me earlier? Come on.

If a person is facing critical issues at home, maybe the last thing they should be doing is making inciting posts on a public forum.

If you are lashing out and attacking me because of other issues in your life, then I hope things turn out well for you. I don’t know how many times I must restate I don’t hate you or anyone here. That’s not me and it’s unfair to paint any people who may disagree with you on political issues with disgusting lies and slurs against them.

  • A car is a box that gets me from point A to point B. And carries the gear I need to use. For me, not a point of identity.

  • Some days I feel that my music is adrift, possibly on fire, in the middle of the ocean.

That’s a completely valid point of view. Some people like cars. Others don’t.

the name of the ship cracks me up too "Felicity Ace". Some real poetry in that name.
