Bandcamp will die soon

Acquired by a computer game firm. Only a matter of time until they ruin it. I never even got around to uploading anything!

Sadly you are almost certainly right. I have no idea why Activision Epic* would want to buy Bandcamp.

  • This is a huge bummer. I spend A LOT of time on Bandcamp. Almost as much as I do Spotify. A literal treasure trove for all kinds of experimental and independent artists. Here’s hoping they either do right by it or another company makes something similar. I’m not hopeful though 😔

  • Epic doesn't have a history of making purchases only to bin them; and seeing as Bandcamp isn't even in Epic's competitor set, I'd bet good odds that Bandcamp will still be serving us well in five years' time.

If I had to play armchair strategist I'd suggest that Epic see value in Bandcamp's ability to link royalties to micropayments. Could make for in-game purchases of featured music where revenue is directly paid to artists without the middleman of traditional e-distribution music channels. This would have the added benefit of being seen as a 'responsible' anti-fat-cat revenue model.

  • So…time to write down all the labels and artist I’m following as it’s my only and best source for free & paid music.
Let’s hope it will not die 🙏🏽🖤🙏🏽

  • Saw the email today and got really apprehensive about it. Hopefully it won’t change but I'm not holding my breath

  • What! That stinks, but still early days. Of course something will change but what and how much is yet tbd.

Seems obvious to me what they're trying to do. Epic Games got hit hard when they maligned and tried to cheat Apple out of App Store revenue and then later lost their case in court. They're trying to become Apple. They want to make Bandcamp their iTunes.

Frankly, Epic's CEO makes terrible strategic decisions and he doesn't know how to follow up after their first act, which was the massively successfully game Fortnite. He screwed his own company out of all of the revenue they were making on Apple's platform and this won't make up for their losses.

    I just canceled my account.

Could be good for licensing music as they do make Unreal Engine.

Get ready for Blockchain NFT Bandcamp. You and your music are the commodity. Not pleased to see this. Remember how Fortnite makes money.

No, I get it. It's another venue for musicians to license music. I canceled my account because I don't like Epic's CEO or his schemes. I'm not asking anyone else to do the same thing, but I did provide the information in case people want to. Bandcamp is already history to me.

I should modify that to 'the CEO is trying to figure out their NEXT act'. Since he blew up their access to Apple's App Store, they lost a massive source of revenue.

    https://www.ign.com/articles/fortnite-made-9-billion-in-two-years-while-epic-games-store-has-yet-to-turn-a-profit

That kind of gigantic screw up usually gets CEO's fired and their company sued by stockholders.

They have a ton of acts in the fire and if fortnite vanished they would keep plowing along fine with even just Unreal Engine. They know not to be dependant on a single trendy title and are far from it.

See the IGN link I provided, above. There's really no sugarcoating it, their CEO messed up big time.

Are you serious? A company whose CEO screws up distribution of their main moneymaker on two platforms (both iOS and Android) and loses literal billions of dollars of almost guaranteed revenue is a defective part in their machine. He's bad news.

  • Epic are good at supporting indie creators with the Unreal engine platform model which is great for indie artists so I can see why it's a good match for Bandcamp.

Epic Games Store is like three years old. Unreal Engine is over twenty five years old and has made billions.

Nah, I don’t care either, just talkin turkey. Companies lose millions in order to make billions.

  • I had to re-read The Email again and while the initial news stung and I don’t want “my” beloved Bandcamp to change the actual manifesto from past/ future CEO Ethan Diamond is somewhat reassuring.

Like many others I’d not be shocked if this acquisition leads to some form of downfall or downgrade morph but who knows.. maybe it’ll be even better somehow.

They are expanding business .. what's hard to understand ? Music (soundtrack) is very important part of gaming industry ... it may actually increase sales if they somehow integrate it with Unreal Engine and all companies using Unreal Engine will be able directly in engine buy music for their developed game ..

I see this more like positive thing than negative. Really don't getting some drama queens theatrically cancelling accounts and stuff like that. Sometimes is good to look outside of own bubble and try understand world in wider context.

I really hope you're right. I've just seen too many acquisitions that result in the death of great companies and products.

  • These moves often go sour..

  • Some times big companies buy little (but growing) companies to absorb their assets and patents or just to kill off a competitor... but this acquisition seems like a growth strategy to add more potential. Of course, it ends up depending on the integration and execution of a well intended strategy. If the core talent leaves it's often a wasted effort with little payoff for anyone.

I'm not one to hold a grudge, but I've never forgiven Gibson for shutting down Opcode. Or Adobe for killing FreeHand. or E-mu for killing Ensoniq and creative for killing E-mu.
