DSP56300 emulation - Virus B/C/SNOW Synth VST/AU

edited April 23 in Other

This is mind blowing. They have emulated the DSP chip set that's in synths like the Virus B &C. More synths are coming.

I'm running this in Logic X on my MacBook M1 Air and it's amazing.

Open source? Does it work on an M1 Mac chip?

Just answered my own questions. Yes to both.

I'll wait for someone else to test this out first. I don't want to destroy my computer.

  • Tried it. Sounds good but not optimized for m1, lots of glitches, cpu usage is insane. That's saying something because I can run everything in m1.

It's running 100% flawless on my MacBook Air M1 using Logic Pro X in native M1 mode (non Rosetta).
    What daw are you using?

I was using Ableton, hmmmm. I should re-download a newer build. I used it like 2-3 weeks ago.

There has been a recent update.

  • Nice, I'll give it another shot.

  • Sounds real great, but holding out for the Nord Modular. Then we'll be properly cooking!

  • I also tried this on my old 2011 iMac with core i5. Even on the longest buffer setting I couldn't get it to smoothly play 1 note. DSP meter was off the roof. LOL.

Interestingly, they say it works on a current-generation Raspberry Pi, so maybe something else is going on.

    Thank you so much!
    This is fun.

I can only read 1 of the Rom’s at any time. Am I right that Rom C is the “best”?

  • Works great on my M1 Pro MBP…Barely 5% cpu hit for one channel of audio.

Never used a real Virus, though I’ve always dreamed of owning one. This sounds pretty much spot on from what I’ve heard. So much character in this baby! — Reminds me somewhat of the sounds from Sunrizer on iOS, but with obviously far more sound design capability.

Only problem so far is the velocity curve from my Hydrasynth is inverted and I haven’t figured out how to fix it yet., so just turned velocity off on my hydra for now.

Yes for now. Access Virus C is the best it can do at the moment.

I've been following the thread on KVR. Folks that have the hardware say it sound identical.

  • Great👍 It sounds really good.
    Amazing that this is possible

  • Does the EQ in the effects section work for you all?
It’s the only part of the effects page that doesn’t seem to do anything here, but maybe I’m missing a routing option or something.

  • ok, The EQ Works fine with the Virus C rom.. It was just oddly absent from the Virus B rom that I tried initially. Alls well now, except for inverted velocity still!

Btw, I hope they don’t start putting legal pressure on the people hosting synth roms now. If anything, I think this could incentivize people to buy the hardware. I’ve gone from casual interest in buying a Virus, to 100% planning to now, after just a few hours in the emulator. A good VA is the only thing missing from my collection (currently consisting of DS12 and Hydrasynth), — now the only question is whether I’ll go for a C or shell out more for a TI

Yeah. I’m thinking of buying the hardware too. It sounds amazing.

  • There has been an update with more performance improvements.

  • New update 1.2.12: https://dsp56300.wordpress.com/downloads/

    DSP563xx Emulator v1.2.12 Change Log (20/03/2022)

    • [Imp] The plugin is now available as FX unit.
The FX unit has a different plugin ID so both can be used at the same time. FX units are
      available as separate downloads.

    • [Imp] A second UI skin has been added, the skin can be switched from a drop down menu in
      the upper left corner

    • [Imp] Added Linux builds for aarch64 aka ARMv8

    • [Fix] Rewritten midi clock code to fix various out-of-sync-issues for arps, delays, etc

    • [Fix] drop downs for Reverb Room Type and Delay LFO Type displayed too many entries
    • [Fix] Virus Powercore RAM banks failed to load
    • [Fix] Toggle switches displayed the opposing state
      (Suboscillator Type, LFO Poly/Mono switches)
  • For some reason I cannot use certain plugins within Bitwig on my M1 MacBook. I get that message that it’s not supported and is asking to delete. Even when I grant permission within the security settings it still doesn’t work. Reading this thread I get the impression that some people are running on a M1? How do you guys bypass it/what am I doing wrong?

  • It's a Mac thing.

    Run the following:
    sudo xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /path/to/your.vst

from your terminal. This will work for any plugin that's not signed. Unfortunately there's no other way to fix this because thanks Apple.

  • Where do you get ROMs?

I downloaded the mystery island virus editor demo and that came with loads of ROMS. I copied them over to the relevant folder for the emulator.

If you find anymore please let us know.

    EDIT: Thought you meant sounds.

Probably best not to post that here.

  • Agreed, don’t post the link. But I will say the search for it was very easy. I haven’t tried the plug-in yet, don’t know if my 2012 mbp pro will handle it.

There was no EQ on the virus B. I think there’s a few other differences. No analog modelled filter maybe? I gather the C is basically an updated B (I’ve only ever had hands on a B ). Meaning the B is technically a less capable synth.

With that said, the B rom has less of a CPU hit so you might find it performs better on your machine.

This has stopped being an issue for me as they’ve optimised it a lot from when it was first released, but previously I could only use the B ROM without dropouts.

The UI doesn’t adjust according to the ROM loaded. It’s be nice if it removed options/features that weren’t available. Could be on their to do list.

The rate the development has progressed is amazing!

  • It's kind of amazing that Virus is still being manufactured, since it hasn't been updated in years. Emulation sounds great tho.

he's already said when the parts run out, its done. That being said, it was a hell of a lot easier and efficient to get a Ti snow used for 350$ than it was to get this working efficiently, but that was a little bit ago.

  • Finally got it working, it barely seems to use any CPU on my M1 and I'm quite happy with the sound. As a bonus I also got my (old) Ohmforce plugins working within Bitwig.

    Very handy to know. Thanks.
