  • News is BBC are reviving shortwave radio, hopefully this will give the Russian population a better perspective about the war.

  • its a shame we need a thread like that, but yeah... great work! I hope this will be helpful for some friends here around!

not sure if this is true but in case yes, not sure if trick above will work... not sure if it means they just disabled DNS servers (so ip adresses will be still accessible) or they completely stop traffic .. if afraid second option ..

Russia is going definitely switch to "North Korea mode" :-((

Edit: most probably fake news (this guy is very trustful source)

Who is this "black swan" guy making these claims? I can't see anything about this in the regular media.

  • No news source is entirely trustworthy, including the BBC.

  • IIRC the Beeb only stopped its shortwave World Service a few years ago. This war shows how important the “old” tech still is, and how fragile the internet is, despite being designed precisely to stay up during wartime.

I guess the original internet plan was more about routing around damage, rather than surviving deliberate dismantling.

Nobody said they were "entirely trustworthy". That is a crazy standard to judge any news outlet by.

    Is any organisation "entirely trustworthy"?

But the BBC isn't going to publish a story about Russia going off the net if it wasn't confirmed. Unlike the cowboys on FaceBook and Twitter.

One of editors has quit RT, she said it was because of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but you can listen to something and have a different viewpoint on the subject.

I listed few times to RT and it has been always disgusting propaganda .. so i made my strong opinion about this source :-D Wouldn't push it to anybody and of course i'm not idealist about western mainstream media too .. but this was simply too much .. also because i'm from Slovakia which was occuppied by Russians 1968 - 1989 and we have very much a lot of experience with Russian propaganda and online trolls (they're still intensively poisoning our media space and public discourse, also politics ), i have zero tolerance to this ...

Don’t want to live under any ‘Nazi’ type government.. Do we?

Really? You’re equating an individual deciding not to listen to something, and voicing their opinion about it, with advocating Nazi type government censorship??

Sorry, not my fight, but this strikes me as an absurd thing to say. Or, did I miss a post somewhere that called for outlawing RT?

this is deeper question.. should we provide freedom for those who have primary goal to destroy freedom ? I would say NO. There should be unbreakable boundaries - it's disadvantage of liberal democracy. There should be limits and if somebody wants primary destroy some rights, those rights should be provided to him.

    Speech doesn’t destroy freedom.
Disallowing speech destroys at least one freedom.
Who gets to decide who should be shut down?

  • I just went and read about Lord Haw Haw, I remember my grandma telling me about everyone listening to him here in the U.K. during ww2. The authorities discouraged people from listening but whether they couldn’t or just didn’t jam the broadcasts I’m not sure.

They did hang him when they caught him though…

Joyce… Mmmm, yes, the trial was based upon his nationality.

@wim - in this case, the EU made the decision. The reasoning is RT and Sputnik are considered Russian-state-controlled propaganda outlets that promote Russian aggression against Ukraine.

That being said, the EU is based on the rule of law so the stations can, and in fact do, attack the ban in court. So the ultimate decision will be made there.

What his nationality was would determine if he was guilty of treason to the UK or not.

The funny thing is he lied to get a British passport and, after the war, that was what they used to prove he was guilty of treason.

Yes he did, but look how they treated the Duke of Windsor, one rule for one…

The Duke of Windsor wasn't in Germany helping the Nazis during the war. Haw Haw was.
