Audiobus 2.1 SDK Released with Big News!

  • Yeah, I saw the announcement over on Facebook. I was surprised the news wasn't given here first....

  • Great news! A bit scary for the apps with slacker devs

  • Yay! That's pushing the limits :)

  • Yeah, how did this not land here first? Feels weird getting news about Audiobus from some other website considering how incredibly active this forum is.

  • How do the devs who have developed apps that we love and rely on get motivated to update given the issue of the "mandatory" nature of the update or things break? How will we get motivated to update to iOS 8 if it's going to trash such apps if they don't get updated in time. This may leave yet another iOS update with a 20% lag for Apple - us iOS Audiobus using musicians. What can be done?

  • edited June 2014

And I also don't want another huge iOS update sitting on my iDevices because it's been pushed because I keep enough room free for recording - even when I absolutely can't use it because it might nuke half my music apps?

We have some time. How do we put something in motion here? This is a potentially serious problem.

  • I don't see an IAA update for Audiobus in the Spain app store so perhaps there's some jumping the gun?

It's an announcement for the SDK for devs @miguelmarcos to update their apps. But it also tells us what's coming as users.

  • This isn't a small change. This is a huge change in the underlying architecture of Audiobus. Sometimes things have to be done in order to move forward. I believe that this is a case of necessity and has to be done. I have, of the 100+ paid-for apps, probably 40 apps that I consider essential. These are all by solid developers that I have no doubt will release the needed updates. Apple has made IAA the way forward, and Audiobus is conforming to that--it's not a bad thing, it's just the way it is. Will this kill some apps? Probably, but the apps most likely to get killed will be the apps that have already been abandoned or the apps that seldom see any updates anyway. I doubt the popular apps will not be updated. I don't see this as a big problem.

  • I'm always on the latest and greatest os, if some apps fall down shame on that developer ;)
Looking @ numbers - more then 3/4 of ios user are always on the latest os, so if you are developing something and are not willing to move with the present - u r in the wrong business

  • OK, thanks for the clarification. So, if I update from 2.1 to 2.x, whatever the upcoming IAA update version is, existing AB-compatible apps will break?

  • Honestly, since @Sebastian hasn't said anything about this, I'm wondering if Tim Webb jumped the gun on the announcement. @Sebastian has said many times before that he prefers that he (or @Michael) make announcements for Audiobus to outside parties making the announcements. We haven't heard from @Sebastian yet, so I think it would be a good idea for us to wait and see what happens....

At this point, nothing will break if you don't update to iOS8. That is the key here.

  • Midi state saving would be awesome for sugar bytes apps. Really hope they jump on this as they never updated for the current state saving.

Uh oh...I really hope devs are on this in time for the iOS 8 release. There are some apps I'd hate to lose having in Audiobus. Especially things like guitar apps (Amidio pls be onboard) since I'm no guitarist but use the apps with JamUp, Flying Haggis etc.

Agreed. I have no doubt that some apps will be incompatible, but I truly believe that the developers of the best and most popular apps (the ones I use), will be not only updated, but will be ready before iOS8 gets released. @Sebastian and @Michael are not fools. They have ALWAYS been very, very careful about the user experience with transitions. I trust that they will have things totally in control.

I would like to be optimistic about Amidio, but that is just one company that I don't like (over promise, under-deliver, disappear for months at a time, etc). I still believe that even they will be ready with new updates. The Wizdom Music apps on the other hand.....

  • From a user perspective there isn't much to announce exept saving the midi config \o/
    all is well

there's a comment from Sebastian in the comments section of that Discchord news, I'm sure he gave him the OK to release the news

Sebastian commented on Tim's post at Discchord, just to expand on and clarify some things Tim said. That gives me all the legitimacy I need....

    EDIT-----firejan beat me to it.

  • Seeing as I'm not that excited about iOS 8 and some of my preferred apps are quite likely not to get updated any time soon, I shall probably stick with iOS 7. My iPad 2 is getting quite long in the tooth and it's debatable whether it would function well under iOS 8 anyway. If I ever get a newer model of iPad, I shall review my needs, but for the moment, I'm happy with the apps I'm using.

  • I was hoping the IAA implementation in AB would mean that I'll be able to use Animoog and Thor in Tabletop but seems like it's not that simple :(

Ah, Good to know! I wasn't aware of this. :-)

  • One good thing, for those who don't want to update to iOS8, is that "supposedly", this time around, we will be able to delete the update from our systems and it won't steal 3.5GB of space from our tablets.

  • edited June 2014

Midi state saving sounds good......looks like Animoog will be deleted soon.....I can't see it getting any more updates tbh

Really, you think it'll get left for dead? Seems like a such a popular app.

Very excited about the idea of sharing midi layouts too!

  • I hope it doesn't get left but I'm not full of confidence......one of my favourite apps though...

  • I wouldn't mind an IAA update but Animoog's staying on my iPad forever that's for sure. I still have the SynthX on my iPad and I'm loving it, even though it doesn't even have AB.

  • Audiobus 2.1 has been live since June 11 by the way. I think the news here is about what is involved in the now publicly released 2.1 SDK and how it will work on iOS 8.

I would be sad to lose Animoog. That app alone would be enough for me to stay on iOS 7. I hope Moog would take the time to do the necessary update...
