so how do the midi fx ( arppegiator) work? is it a separate entity that can be set up in the midi fx slot in AUM and control other synth apps?
Yes, you can control any synth with Meta midi
I bought Mela 3. Mostly because it also works in Logic. The midi component works great too. I know Mela 2 also works on macOS, but I figured... only $5 and I get the new midi fx on macOS too. Logic already has some of that built-in of course, but I like the easy interface and the synth sounds pretty sweet.
Hey all,
Glad to see Mela receiving a lot of positive response
I’m happy to answer any specific questions you might have that haven’t been answered about Mela, my other apps, past / future plans, technical issues, pricing, or if you want me to clarify anything from my blog post (or Mela FAQ) etc.
Let me know on this thread or get in touch directly.
Any plans for NFM?
The short answer is yes, I have plans. The long answer: https://forums.nikolozi.com/d/5-nfms-development-roadmap
Just to give a brief history of my app development adventures. Originally, I planned to develop multiple apps and plug-ins, like most other developers. But over time, I realised, often I'd be working on a new app and it would take all my attention and energy. While the other apps felt neglected due to resource constraints. This was especially hard when I would be doing 40hr/week of development work for clients. I would think to myself that I would eventually get enough free time to update all my apps at once. But that beautiful future, where everything is possible, never arrived. Eventually, I realised, the best approach would be just to focus on one app - Mela. Keep evolving it, deliver regular updates and make it flexible enough to make it do things I wanted my other apps to do. The existing apps would eventually merge their features into Mela. That's what happened to NPD. It now lives inside Mela. The same will happen with NFM (and probably Easy MIDI).
That makes sense and I understand it, it just makes me sad as NFM is so close to being the perfect FM synthesizer. And I love FM synthesis.
I've always wanted FM8 with a better interface. And you delivered. No more algorithms. Total flexibility to shape a sound.
Thanks to your decision to make Mela a true cross-platform app (iOS and macOS), it has become one of my favorite and most used synths.
Such a simple feature, but I really appreciate you maintaining links to contributed patch sets at https://nikolozi.com/blog/artist-presents-for-mela @Nikolozi
Not only does it make it easy to move to the newer Mela versions, it also greatly reduces the time it takes to set up a new iPad
The perfect FM synth ha? That's quite a compliment, thank you 🙏. I love FM synthesis too. In fact, was using NFM in Logic yesterday, and a few small desktop bugs were getting in the way. Maybe, I'll add proper macOS support before integrating it into Mela.
My goal is to retain the clean, simple and flexible interface of NFM once it becomes part of Mela. I haven't come up with a good solution yet, but hoping it to be an improvement rather than a regression. And hopefully, you won't be sad about NFM's fate
Awesome, I appreciate you saying that. Initially, I wasn't sure if there would be many macOS (AUv3) users, but I thought, at least I'll be using it a lot in Logic Pro. Looks there more than I anticipated.
Nice, it's great to hear that you find it useful. Everyone is welcome to send me their Mela presets and I'll happily host them on my site.
Something trivial to ask: Can I get the LFOs in free running mode inside MELA 3?
Yes, it's on my to do list.
I'll just paste the answer from Mela FAQ (https://nikolozi.com/mela/faq):
Will Mela 3 support iOS 14 and macOS 11 (Big Sur) or earlier?
Unfortunately, Mela 3 and later will not support iOS 14 and macOS 11. I know it's very upsetting to the users on older devices that can't upgrade to the latest OS. But I have very limited resources. I currently have to test and support Mela plug-ins (Mela, Mela FX and Mela MIDI) inside multiple AU3 hosts (GarageBand, Logic Pro, AUM, Cubasis etc) on multiple devices with different form factors (iPhones, iPods and Macs). That's a lot of work as it is, and supporting older OS versions would significantly increase the debugging and testing required. Furthermore, the app uses iOS 15 / macOS 12 only features. Writing code to incorporate the same functionality on older devices is non-trivial work. Finally, I have a long list of Mela users' feature requests, and I would rather focus my efforts on that.
Also, one other thing. Mela 1 and 2 won't be receiving any updates. Full focus is on Mela 3.
Thanks for the info and the prompt email-support!🙏🏽🧔🏼👍🏽
These are all fair points and making the older versions free for users is also a nice concession.
arggg, i was too late for the intro price ...
@fa15 argggg, get Mela 2 it free…
For anyone like me who has difficulty with instruction manuals. Here's how to use the 3 Mela 3 modules, how to find the arpeggiator and how to sidechain the envelope follower.
I had no idea it had this function. Thanks!
Yeah thanks @Jamie_Mallender !
My pleasure.
Mela 3 update - particularly excited about the midi fx update.
It just keeps getting better and better. Very impressed with the commitment of this developer.
Wow this is awesome. Mela is one of my go-to’s for that “analog” sound. It just sounds so good. Great developer.
The recent update tells You, that chords can be generated by single notes, where can I find that function? I use Mela 3 in AUM in input slot, triggered via A2M. A2M sends single notes to other apps.
Thank you for the update! The gift that keeps on giving
New update with chord module and lots more…
Seriously, one of the hardest working developers today!
