Song Of The Month Club - April 2022
What is the Song of the Month Club?
It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.
The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.
The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.
All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.
We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material
And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:
The crows gather, one by one
As dawn reveals a blood red sun
A shadow spreads across the sky
A crow pecks a corpse’s eye
As the crows fly
Silhouettes against the sky
As the crows fly
Fatefully
Dark wings against the sky
Dogs whimper, children cry
A shadow spreads across the land
A gun is clenched in a bleeding hand
As the crows fly
Silhouettes against the sky
As the crows fly
Fatefully
We live out our lives
Until the day when hell arrives
We live out our lives
Comfortably
This is an older music track that I improvised using Yamaha EX5 and Korg Triton Pro synthesizers. I used a Lexicon PCM 80 for the effects.
It's titled Homeward Bound.
also with [[]]togethermachine, started with 4 blocswave samples and the vocal samples..
released today from upcoming album

ok having some kind of flow I made two tracks during march, and three almost finnished.
Here is one of the new ones:
Bandcamp
Spotify
started the track on the ipad in Zenbeats, then its finnished in Bitwig studio (having a hard time deciding wich daw to use, i like Ableton alot to) both great daws with similar workflow, but each one of them having their own advantages that i like
This tune was recorded during the COVID lockdown.
It is 4 songs with segues. The whole point of this project was an attempt at a story line, loose as it may be.
Song 1: climate change causes wars for land leads into
Song2: the war
Song 3 the aftermath
Song 4: the last person left on earth a pregnant woman dies by immolation.
I know it’s weird. It was lockdown

@richardyot , I like the simple riff in combo with your more complex voice/melody, I think the melody have a darker tone, again I get some U2 feeling at the 3 min mark and the song lightens up a bit, I like the contrast. I think the song is really good, like the one in March, good songwriting skills!
Thanks for the listen and the feedback. I’m currently away on holiday but I will be listening to your entry as soon as I get back next week.
The Hi-Hat groove makes for a beautiful and funky intro, the sampled guitar rhythm then adds to the vibe, and the sparse piano parts complete the atmosphere. It's a great piece of chilled-out funk, reminds me a bit of Kid Loco.
The piano motif is memorable and tastefully done. It might have been nice to hear a little more variation in the track, but it's a really nice listen.
Have you ever seen...

Love it. I really like the world music sorta vibe I got from it. Very cool
Very beautiful, relaxing, and lyrical tune with some fine improvisation. Great job.
Good job with blending the vocal samples with the music, it really feels and sounds like a cohesive song. The bass line is great and the synths work really well too. Love the synth solo at the end.
It's very ambitious, respect, writing a suite is very difficult. Although the style of music is a bit heavy for me (I'm more of an indie kid) it's clear that the level of technical ability is really high, some great vocal and guitar performances there, and lots of variety and a huge array of musical ideas on display. Also it's really great to hear some well-crafted songs on here.
Another eccentric blend of electronica and horns This one sounds like a brass ensemble in a room full of clocks, it's quirky, crazy, and fun.
Your song writing is good. The chorus is catchy, your vocals could be sung more aggressively, just my opinion. Im a thrash metal guy slowing turning to jazz, so my first instinct is just scream. I’m not an expert in your style but I did enjoy the tune. The quite part with the birds chirping was great, I love unexpected things in music.
Curious about your guitar tone was it double tracked or was that a reverb or delay on it?
The guitars sounded very clean and free of noise, do you mic an amp or use amp sims? Or both
Thank you for your kind words about my singing, I wish I could sing better, but I’m a guitarist first. I’m just happy you listed to it all the way through, it was way to long to post here. I have this whole animated story in my head that goes with it, there’s no way I could animate that so I guess it will just stay in my head lol. Thank you for your feedback.
Your singing was great! And perfect for the style of music.
Thanks - the guitars were indeed double-tracked, and then panned hard left and right, this is something I do a lot because it creates a nice big guitar sound.
I only have a small 5w Bugera practice amp, so for recording I always use amp sims, it's a lot easier than trying to mic up an amp anyway, and more flexible. In this case the verse guitars used the new Nembrini Faceman 2, and the Chorus uses the Chow BYOD going into Nembrini's Cali Reverb.
There's quite a few amp sims that sound decent IMO, Overloud, Nembrini, Even Saturn followed by a good IR can deliver some nice tone.
@DavidEnglish nice improvisation and very relaxing piece of music
@Kitusai its a nice piece of artmusic ? (dont know if that is a genre) with lots of imagination. Very cool indeed!
@prtr_jan very nice groove, laidback, I like the vocal and vocal melody, I like the simplicity in the synth sounds, a bit retro sounding, very good composition and great overall! played it twice I will put it in one of my personal playlists on spotify
@Jmd8928 i grew up with exactly this kind of music, and was a singer in a ”trash/death” metal garageband, this reminds me of a band called Meliah Rage that i listend to, on the production side i would have put the vocal in the front, of course up to taste, but i think the vocal is really good and deserves better place in the mix, this is great, keep up the good work, your songwriting and guitarplaying really shines I think, listened to it all and I can absolutly listen again
The singer in my band lived by the motto “it’s better to burn out than to fade away”.
Fade away he did not.
If you don’t like cheesy repetitive vocoder you’re better off skipping this one. And most of my other tracks too :-)
I didn’t think I’d be sharing this (but I ended up thinking life’s too short to worry about inconsequential crap like whether or not somebody dislikes my stupid little tune) but I will get around to listening to everybody else’s proper songs in due course.
Apologies for not having done so yet.
Dark and edgy - suits the subject matter perfectly. The big synth motif is very good, and the way it comes in and out at the start and end helps to add interest to the arrangement. Nicely crafted sounds throughout.
Neil Young regretted writing that line (it's better to burn out than to fade away) after Kurt Cobain used it in his suicide note, he said it fucked with him. Sadly a lot of my favourite artists have gone that way: Nick Drake, Elliott Smith, Sparklehorse, and Cobain of course.
Thanks for listening.
This was the first song I’ve made that I actually wrote on the Novation Circuit. All the main parts were made with the circuit and the main synths are carried straight over to the finished song as audio. I love to couple the circuit with a zoom H1N. It gets me away from computers and screens completely. I then copy the audio to iCloud Drive on iPhone or Mac via the zooms SD card. Works a treat.
It’s a lot of fun playing around with arrangements on the fly with the circuit. It’s a surprisingly powerful sequencer in that respect. I love that it’s self contained and doesn’t have a screen I can’t read when I’m tired :-)
It’s also a good little MIDI controller for iOS.
I bought a Novation xiosynth years ago. It’s still a brilliant little controller as it has a class compliant midi + audio interface and despite being over 15 years old works perfectly with iOS. If they added that functionality to a future Circuit it would be perfect to use with an iDevice. My xiosynth was my main gigging interface back in the day, coupled with the original white Intel MacBook. It was brilliant apart from the lousy build quality. Having said that, despite it being battered and bruised with a big hole in the corner it never let me down and still works perfectly.
I’d love a xioCircuit if you’re listening Novation!!
Ooops. Sorry for going off on a major tangent!
Yeah it's funny how many different approaches there are to making music. I don't think I could get my head around using a groovebox, for some reason it's just something that doesn't connect with my brain (I've tried a few in app form, I think Gadget is really the only one I've ever clicked with, but that's because it's much more versatile than a typical groovebox, it's more like a DAW).
I'm much more comfortable trying to knock ideas out with a guitar or a piano (even though I'm a mediocre guitarist and piano player!), or in something like Garageband. But it's obvious that a lot of people find the hardware grooveboxes very inspiring and fun to work with. Some people like to paint in oils, and others prefer watercolours, and it's the same with us. Some like instruments, others like grooveboxes, or samplers, or Abelton etc...
I imagine for more electronic genres the appeal is that you have something tactile and responsive to work with, and you can build tracks up very quickly.
I don't like most hardware groove boxes, I also find apps like GR16 to be fairly horrific to my sensibilities, but the Circuit just clicks. It's battery powered, very cheap (I pad less than £100 used), small and light (perfect for the sofa) and the sequencer Is really simple yet has enough depth to be able to write arrangements without fuss. And it doesn’t have a screen. I’d rather use the iPad than a groovebox with a screen.
I don't think I'd ever really want to use something like an MPC or an Electron box; They're great for what they are but I don't want the added features or complexity. And I don’t want to go DAWless.
Right, and I imagine there is also a performance element to it: you can tap out a beat, play notes and chords etc... which makes it more organic and fun than fiddling about in a piano roll.
Totally. Also the pads make for a different experience. My fingers tend to revert to the same old shapes on a piano keyboard. Using pads within a pre-set scale (which you can change on the fly) can mix things up a bit.
It does make for a cool midi controller for iOS too, with and without the sequencer.
Hi Guys.. Here's my contribution this month.. Its a Collab with a lovely lady from my neck of the woods (South London) when I lived in the UK.. Roxanne Bourne..... She has sessioned for various producers and artists throughout the years, including the likes of LOVE THIS RECORDS (Stock&Aitken), NJOI, and has played support to UK R&B star Lewis Taylor.
Roxanne has had her own material featured on BBC Radio Unsigned Artists, and more recently entered the UK Soul Chart, featuring on the track 'Hold On'...
The Track has already got some positive feedback.. From a House Music Mag.. ''Spirit of House''..
Its out on Promo tomorrow.. Official Worldwide release May 6, 2022... On Veskler Records.. Enjoy guys..
@richardyot
Your signature Indie sound is there from the start with a good choice of tones and floaty vocal fx fitting the song nicely.
I like how the break section and the change towards the end before the chorus comes back in keeps the arrangement flowing nicely and stops it being repetitive or predictable.
Thanks I'm working on making the arrangements and dynamics more interesting, throwing in sections that don't conform to verse + chorus. I'm not 100% sold on the chorus melody in this one, but I'll listen again in a few months to re-evaluate.
You've definitely succeeded with the arrangement/dynamics. I like the quiet section before the last chorus, it helps give the last chorus an extra lift. Mixing up the arrangement by keeping back a new section until right at the end works nicely too.
