Open links to other websites in a new tab?

Here’s a little wish. I’m not sure how many others struggle with this. So many times I click on a link to another website on this forum and forgot to press and hold to open it in a new tab. I usually return to the forum after clicking on a link but when I just click the forum is gone.

Is there a way @Michael to enable the open links to other websites in a new tab function?
Or am I the only one struggling with this?

  • Yep, I wouldn’t mind this either

  • On an iPad, just tap the link with two fingers, not one. That’ll open it in a new tab.

On a Mac, or with a keyboard on the iPad, ⌘ click (or tap) a link.

I would totally hate it if links automatically opened in a new tab.

    Agreed.

I’ve never had the previous page button fail to load the page when going back after following a link.

Well, it does do one thing that's inconvenient. If you're reading a thread and are in the middle of a page that isn't the last unread page, the back button will sometimes take you to the next unread page.

  • It’s something for more than just this forum. You’d want an entire setting to open the link in a new tab without holding to do so. Like for the iOS. Www.apple.com/feedback

Yes I also experienced that. Or that the page goes back to the top etc. Very annoying.
I know from most other forums that links do open in new tabs and find it logical. You normally don't want to leave the forum when clicking on a link.

I don’t want any site making that decision for me. I also haven’t used any other forums that open links in new tabs. That would annoy the heck out of me.

Well you also can set that up on every website (link) individually.

Not that I hate the idea but I agree and would prefer not to change it. One of the most annoying things about any software is removing simple decisions from the user.

Rather than add new functionality to the forum (no doubt a less than simple task, and possibly something that would not please everyone), wouldn't it be easier to undertake some sort of training, to provide a more secure link between your brain and your fingers. As a bonus, this may have additional benefits, for example, the ability to hold a glass long enough to take a sip, holding a writing tool long enough to write a letter, squeeze a zit long enough to make it pop, change a light bulb (incremental turns of course), and so on.

  • Maybe this would fix the App Store link problem.

Opening in a new tab feels like the appropriate behavior here to me as well, but of course in matters of taste there's an appropriate expression that applies here as well.

Just out of curiosity I added a poll to this thread. I'm surprised that some people actually don't like that function. I'm always relieved when clicking on a link and forgetting to hit "open in a new tab" doesn't close the page I'm currently on.

  • There are hundreds of reasons not to do this, the primary one for me is that it removes the choice from everyone. As things stand, anyone who wants to open a link in a new tab can do so by simply holding a modifier key or long pressing, anyone who doesn't, can just click/tap it. As soon as you put target="_blank" in there it's not possible to open it in the same window so you remove the choice from every user and force it upon them.

    Also, several million accessibility reasons.

Ooooh I think there is a misunderstanding going on which is my fault!

With link I meant link to another site outside of audiob.us
For example to apps and other websites.

Of course it wouldn’t make sense to click on a thread on this forum and have it open in a new tab. I absolutely agree!

Sorry my bad!! I will correct the initial post.

  • I always hold it down aka long press and open in background. I made a habit of doing it in general.

@Michael mentioned that the forum software needed an update/upgrade but has been busy with Loopy Pro and other things. It’s something he is aware of, but it’s on the back burner at the moment. This could be something that would get fixed with that update/upgrade, so give it a little time and the fix should hopefully come. Cheers.

Fixed? No. This isn't something that's broken in this or any other version of the forum software. It may be an option that can be turned on or off in the forum software, but it has never been that way here and isn't something that used to work that way and became broken.

  • I would really, really not like the forum to open new tabs by default for external links.

New study concludes that opening links in new tabs results in higher greenhouse emissions, increased gas prices, and can lead to higher interest rates and runaway inflation:

  • It's a nightmare for anyone using screen readers and assistive devices too.

Thank you @Poppadocrock for your friendly response!
It feels a bit like my suggestion triggered some people that dislike using tabs. I wasn’t really expecting that.
But I always appreciate kind and respectful conversation.

  • I always hold down Cmd when opening an external link, I love tabs. I just don't believe you should remove people's choice.

Sorry for my lack of compassion. Do you have someone else that can do the difficult things for you? Try not to think of (my) responses as rude or not, despite the delivery there is still information contained therein.

Doesn't this already exist? You tap and hold for less than a second and choose the option you want. If that is so difficult that you need to add new (and desire I say undesirable) functionality to an internet forum, maybe there are some other things to be looked first.

And triggered is not really a thing for me. I am like a dog, I bark at anything and everything so try not to feel special.

How rude. Are you implying this is a simple task and the OP lacks a very basic skill set?

  • Is it really that bad to use forums like Gearspace, Vi Control or Logic Pro Help? All 3 of them open external links in new tabs.

  • Actually, what I would like to see is a car that automatically starts as soon as I get in, and if I don't want it to start I just have to insert and turn the key.

Also, it would be great to have a toilet that flushes one minute after I set down so I don't have to press the button. If I am not ready to get up I could just remove the top of the cistern and reset the timer.

Also, has anyone ever thought of a washing mashing that switches on as soon as it detects my clothes being thrown in? That would be great. And a microwave that starts as soon as I put my food in, if I don't want it to start straight away I just close the door.

Hey, how cool would it be if my dog comes to me without being called, but if I don't want to trouble him I just call out his name. Is there any training for that?

  • Oh and another one would be for someone to administer my meds, whether I need them or not. In some cases a double up is better for some so I don't need an exit option here.

  • I also made it a habit to always hold down cmd when opening links on Mac. But on iPad it always takes a while until the menu opens where you can choose open in new tab. I find that quite inconvenient. And as I said there are time where you forget that and feel bothered that the forum is gone. But oh well.....

...so we humans better don't change anything for convince sake again :#

Is it more than a second?

I requested support for a mapping program at work. It was taking 3 minutes to load due to a combination of issues. Eventually it came down to this. I argued that it is causing downtime as I use the application at least 10 times a day. This means a waste of half an hour and a pissed off employee. Sure, it's a boring and not so relevant story, but it's my way of saying; 1 second? Meh.
