When you mentioned classic rock, my first thought was Flying Haggis as well. It doesn't do metal tones well, but it seems made for AC/DC. BIAS is also really good, but probably not needed right out of the gate.

I would suggest (if you're not doing this already) to visit appshopper.com, and set up a wish list. Apps go on sale very often (especially around holidays i.e. 4th of July). If you have patience, you can get some really, really good deals on apps. BIAS goes on sale somewhat often, so you don't need to pay full price right now. Same goes for JamUp (same company - Positive Grid).

  • Great advice. Your head is probably spinning. I started where you are in 2010 as rock singer/songwriter/guitar player wanting to write and record.

I'll just add that you're also going to need a good mic if you're singing and recording any acoustic guitar parts. Mics are so subjective and can be expensive. My voice doesn't get along well with the inexpensive condensers I've tried (Blue Yeti, AKG Perception 220), but I took a chance on a modded MXL 910 (Google "Mike Joly Engineering"), which I couldn't be happier with for most of my vocals and acoustic tracks. I also have a Shure SM7b, which is my absolute favorite vocal mic (right now anyway), but I had to buy a Cloudlifter CL-1 as the SM7b has very low output. I spent $450 on the Shure/Cloudlifter combination, but you could spend thousands on a mic.

As others have said, get an interface that will suit all your needs for the foreseeable future. Guitar interfaces like Apogee Jam are fantastic, but pretty much limited to guitar. You can plug dynamic mics into it using an adapter like this http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062443, but I'd recommend an interface that will accommodate all the inputs (within reason) you see yourself using.

I agree with boone51 about Auria and its plugins, it's awesome. I'll also say get all the amp modelers. I've found that each of them do great things; for example, a setup I have on AmpKit gets me a Strat tone I can't dial in anywhere else and Bias really does something with my Humbucker guitars that can't be matched. To each his own, but I think you get the picture.

I'll also say that this technology is absolutely amazing. I'm still being blown away as my mixes keep getting better each time. Have fun and good luck with the album.

  • Again thank you for all the advice, you have made a newbie feel very welcome. My head is completely spinning right now and im sure in a few months, alot of the things you all mention will make sense. One thing that has occured to me, if I start in GB but then after a few weeks/months I decide that I need to get something with more functionality and move to different DAW, will all that work be lost ? Or can the files be used elsewhere ?

  • edited July 2014

Yes, the files can be used elsewhere, but you'll want to save your tracks/songs as .WAV or .AIFF files. Save the instrument tracks individually if you think you'll want to remix down the road.

EDIT: The video was done with the Mac OS versions of GarageBand and iTunes, but the process should be very similar.

The iOS version of GarageBand allows you to export files using "open in". Most other music apps will accept files exported this way. No need to export to PC or deal with emailing tracks if you don't want to. You can export one track at a time or mixdowns of 2 or more tracks.

  • Yep, what supadom said. Mixdown (mute other tracks to get single track export) and then email to yourself and use the "open in" command. Boom. You won't lose any inspirational tracks by starting in any of the options listed above.

  • Doesn't emailing compress the file into a lossy .MP4 format?

  • That's what I thought it did too....

Yes, but GarageBand for iOS has "open in" as an export option. Again, no need to email. You can export AIFFs at 44.1/16 into any "open in" compatible app.

  • Supadom beat me to it again. Here's a screenshot. Had to download the app again just to figure it out for myself...grrrr

  • And now you all know my real name....:-o

  • It has been added to your file.

But not your song because you chose AIFF.

God man, it's @supanorton not @supadom, get it right dude! I don't want any association with the stuff that man's sayin'! ;)

...and I'm sure he doesn't either

  • Oh wow...there's more than one "supa"....my mind was just blown...sorry

  • The battle of the supa' s. The Supa Bowl.

  • As a newbie and with auria going on sale should I be buying it ?

Depends what kind of n00b you are and how well you know yourself. If you're taken with the possibilities of music on IOS and think it's likely you'll be neglecting your children in six months time, down there in the basement with a wild look in your eye, unshaven, unwashed, but happy By God, then buy it now. If that kind of image disturbs or disgusts you then stick with Garage Band for the time being and if you come to recognize yourself later as the man I mentioned you can always hope for another sale.

Or just pay the full price then anyway and march grimly on in lockstep with so many of the rest of us.

It's a pretty crowded basement. And we have meetings.

  • And steps.

Yes, probably so. You'll thank yourself later if not immediately. It's just as good as it gets on mobile with effects and mixing. The amount of control with Auria is unreal.

  • @Houseofhounds I'll second what DarbyA says. Probably should. Just be aware, it doesn't end with the purchase of Auria...in fact, Auria is a gateway drug all it's own.

  • I'll actually buck the trend and vote 'no, not yet on Auria' if you're just getting back into songwriting, arranging and recording. There's a bunch to learn in Auria (and just mixing generally) and I reckon your focus should be on creating and arranging. GB has lots of tools to help with that and Auria has very few.

Mind, I heart Auria a lot — I just think it could be the wrong kind of distraction at this point. It goes on sale a couple of times a year so don't sweat that. You'll know when you need it and a sale doesn't generate need (though its real real good at generating want!).

  • Everything supacore said is spot on, but I would just add that Auria's sales are few and far between. That was why I suggested pulling the trigger. If you're going to be making music on an iPad, chances are you'll end up with Autia eventually anyway. But maybe not. I'm sure there are folks out there who get along making great music just fine without it. Everybody's different.

  • @Houseofhounds Of course, if you're smart, you'll recognize that you....still...have....the....chance to get a w a y......

Oh man I lol'd at this. I was honestly thinking the same thing as I was typing. "Just put it down and walk away now. Go outside. Hug someone." lol

  • Talking about moving files between Apps just inside your iPad, did anybody mention using AudiShare as your Grand Central wav organiser/trimmer/mover/recorder (with IAA!), and AUdioBus? Essential.
