old school drum machine sounds in auv3?
Hi y’all!
the past couple years i’ve made great use out of apps like funk box (which is a pretty extensive emulator of old school drum machines)
but ever since i’ve started using auv3 i haven’t really found anything similar that has a library of all those classic sounds. anyone know of anything? cr78,808,909 ya knowwwww
thanks!

One thought is to choose a capable AUv3 sampler to adopt as your main brain and load it with old school drum machines galore.
This is not the most convenient solution but it would be the most personal and flexible. Samples sourced either free from the internet or from Samples From Mars would work and with the latter you’d get top-tier samples with round robin hits as well to really seal the oldschool deal.
Reverb has a great free collection of samples from classic machines including the ones you mention with varying accents.
I've used them a fair bit:

This might sound like a broken record, but look at iOS GarageBand. Apple has included a LOT of options for drums, including a big collection of classic electronic drums (LinnDrum, 808, CR-78, 909, CR-8000, TR-707, TR-727, DrumTraks, Simmons, etc.).
I was just going to mention that. Lol.
BeatHawk has some great sounding 808 and 909 sample packs. Or I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of free classic Roland samples to host within the sampler or your choice.
Elliott Garage do individual 606, 808 and 909 apps. I think they're AUv3 but i don't own any of them.
Also, not quite what you're asking but FAC Drumkit is a hugely capable drum synth and could probably do a great job sounding like the 80's Roland classics. No sequencer but there's plenty of options.
The Elliott Garage apps are good sounding emulators but have some odd bugs as AUv3 Instruments, at least the 808. VADrum2 is a pretty good virtual analog simulation of 808 and 909 sounds. Pure Acid has a selection of good Roland drum sounds.
What about Ruismaker Hammerhead? https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/hammerhead-rhythm-station/id1568699989 I don’t own it (yet!) but it seems having a lot of onboard samples, and it has drum synthesis, and you can import your own samples, AND it has a sequencer with lots of options/randomize/mutation.
AudioKit Bass808 is AUv3. Hammerhead has a lot of classic drum sounds. Ditto for kits in EG Pulse. Same with GR-16 and Pure Acid.
ahh thank you. interesting. seems like lots of people just suggest to load these into a sampler. tbh was trying to avoid that. may just bite the bullet and do it, seems worth it. thanks for the link!
and MV-08.
Never seen MV-08 before, and I thought I had all the AUv3 drum machines. Thanks @JohnKay6791.
I use it all the time. Rozeta X0X has a mapping for it. Although you need a second X0X mapped to the extra drum sounds for the full kit.
A while ago, i downloaded this collection. If i remember, the volume of the samples is not consistent, where a lot of them are very low in volume.
MV-08 is very good, and very accessible, simple interface.
I love it. But it only does 808. (Just to clarify for the OP).
Elliott Garage offers a bundle with separate 606, 808, 909, and Linn rompers if you really don't want to load samples. The apps are fun and each has a nice vibe though I never pull them out any more. I just find it easier to maintain kits in other drum apps (Including Elliott Garage Pulse, which if I remember correctly, has those classic kits included or available for download).
Just to make the point (for the millionth time). This is GarageBand. And these are free sounds…
I may have missed something, but GarageBand can't be loaded as an AUv3 can it?
I know it has the classic Roland kits but I can’t see the Linn drum anywhere unless it’s under a different name. Has the DMX though! Which is a nice surprise I never noticed before. Is there anywhere else to get those Linn drum sounds?
EGLM1 is inspired by the LinnDrum LM-1, is it not?
It is! I just didn’t know if it was available anywhere else. I think Touchscaper by Rob Jackson also has a Linn kit.
Here are some free LinnDrum samples I sometimes use: https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2016/09/21/free-linndrum-tape-drum-sample-library/
Nope. However, the resources are there (for free if you already have an iOS device) and if one is clever about these things, GarageBand could be used to great effect to produce rendered drum tracks for use in another DAW.
Yup. I use Drummer percussion tracks in basically everything now. Exportint to Cubasis is smooth af as well.
👍
I recently watched an interview with Moby where we showed his zillion collection of vintage drum machines. He was playing the Electro Harmonix DRM-32, such a cool rythm box, very electro.
It’s in the App Store https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/drm-32/id1488347182 no sync but IAA. He also sells a CR-8000 replica https://apps.apple.com/nl/app/cr-8k/id1441966351 very 808-isch sounds. This stuff is great to loop.
I use SoundFonts for quick and easy vintage drum machines in AUM.
Search for Linn Drum Soundfont in Google and you'll find something quickly.
If working with individual samples, such as for 'medieval percussion', proper vintage :-), I load them into AudioLayer.
I prefer to use sounds independent of Cubasis or Garageband so ideas are portable (often I start in AUM then migrate to Garageband or Cubasis).
I might actually dust GarageBand off, not used it in years.
