(No longer) On the fence about getting Loopy Pro.

I'm on the fence about getting Loopy Pro. I KNOW it's a top quality app in every regard and is like Koala but on steroids, but there are a couple of things that make me wonder if it'd fit within my desired Ambient workflow. I've watched a few tutorials on Youtube, tried to pour through the manual, searched the forum, and I'm still left with many questions before I drop the $30.

(I tried the 7-day trial upon its initial release and was left confused even back then, lol.)

  1. I know that the first loop sets the tempo and length and such. Is there a way to disable the first loop from setting the tempo and length?

  2. Is there a way to resample loops within Loopy Pro like I can in Koala? If so, how does one go about it?

  3. Is there a way to add effects per loop? Or is it per mixer channel only?

  4. Is there a way to make loops play back independent of each other? (Like to have a 7 second loop loop independently from a 30 second loop without the 30 second loop influencing the 7 second loop and squashing that into 5 seconds.)

If I think up more questions pertaining to my personal workflow, I'll be sure to ask them. Thanks in advance.

You can manually set the tempo later -- if you are doing tempoless stuff, you can set things up so that the tempo doesn't effect anything. You can also have loops time-stretch or not.

    1. Is there a way to resample loops within Loopy Pro like I can in Koala? If so, how does one go about it?

Yes. You can set a color to send its output to another color.

    1. Is there a way to add effects per loop? Or is it per mixer channel only?

If you mean can individual loops be dry (recorded without effects) and have effects different from their color channels, then no. But you can have lots and lots of mixer channels.

    1. Is there a way to make loops play back independent of each other? (Like to have a 7 second loop loop independently from a 30 second loop without the 30 second loop influencing the 7 second loop and squashing that into 5 seconds.)

Yes, loops can be set up to be independent of each other. They can have unrelated lengths and start and stop unrelated to the clock/tempo.

If I think up more questions pertaining to my personal workflow, I'll be sure to ask them. Thanks in advance.

It would probably be more fruitful to watch some of the many great tutorial and tips videos out there.

Btw, I think thinking of it as Koala on steroids is probably not the right paradigm. They are really such different apps with such different workflows that , in my opinion, it isn't really helpful to think of them as being similar or in the same niche. While there is some functional overap, the work flows are so different. Lots of people use them together. There are things that Loopy can but for which Koala might simply be more attractive -- and vice versa.

@jwmmakerofmusic I would consider Loopy Pro a great jamming tool. If you build ambient sessions with jamming then you are going in the right direction buying it. I like that it forces me to be a better musician/player. Overall it is amazing, worth way beyond its price range.

  • @espiegel123 @Stuntman_mike You know something? I think I'll buy Loopy Pro on Thursday after I get paid from my gig just to have a play with it. Kind of running low of money after I take bills and expenses into account. :)

If it feels like a big spend, maybe check out some videos of what people are doing with it or some more tutorials to get a feel for it..to reduce the likelihood that it won't suit your needs/preferences.

Fwiw, here is an ambientish piece I did in LP

"The Long Winter" is simply beautiful. However, "The Slowdown" has pretty much answered my questions just by seeing some of the menus you dove into. I'm getting Loopy Pro as soon as I can! That was far more straightforward and to-the-point than a lot of tutorial videos out there. :)

  • Koala hosted inside Loopy Pro is pretty great, too!

I’ve been using Loopy since before HD, so I brought Pro immediately. But wow, @espiegel123, subscribed!

@Michael We like him but understand you have to deal with him.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic the best thing about loopy imo is that there’s still so much more to come, and you get to play a part in developing it.

There’s a very active discord server, a great beta community on slack, a roadmap where you can suggest and vote for the features you want most.

It’s like the ‘choose your own adventure’ of music apps and I’m here for it! 😉

  • I bought it immediately without really understanding how I might use it as my sample / loop usage is minimal, but after diving in a tiny bit I can't see myself working without it now. As an AUv3 inside NS2 it's amazing, essentially giving you audio tracks in NS2 plus a whole lot more. Only issue I've found is the playback speed of samples at different sample rates when you do a mixdown from NS2, they're fine when you're playing using the main transport controls, but in the mixdown they come out slow.

  • I jumped on LP originally for the retrospective looping but that didn’t pan out how I planned but I stayed for everything else that’s great about it.

It’s useful in a lot of ways doing iOS music even if you don’t do much looping.

That's really interesting to me. The retro looping is exactly what I've stayed for! Can you describe how it hasn't panned out?

The other big win for LP for me are the follow actions and the flexible control layouts you can build on screen. Makes live performances so easy compared to other AU hosts.

  • it didn't work for me when it came out, but now with the latest updates i started using it as a control surface for experimental electronic music

That looks amazing! I love the "gosh!" right in the middle... What does Streambyter do?

    Wow.

  • I downloaded Loopy Pro, carefully went through the guided tutorial, and holy shit, setting up an Ambient setup is easy! What makes Loopy Pro attractive to me is how I can access FX parameters with sliders and X-Y pads! So I purchased it immediately, recorded a couple of shite loops just to test it, and it can do everything I ever dreamed of!

Glad it worked out and not surprised at all. I personally think Loopy Pro is the ultimate ambient machine--and actually a live performance w/out match on iOS. Wait until you see how you can seamlessly move from project to project in a set list. Helpful if you ever do any extended ambient jams/performances. Also, you might take a look at Spacecraft inside LP as an ambient loop maker; pretty great!

  • For new readers to the forum: Loopy Pro is a product that provides an income for the host of this forum (and for the Loopy Pro forum). @Michael has a history with music apps on IOS devices that changed history and anyone that appreciates the tools we have for music production should buy his products as a "thank you".

I own them all and will pay for the new products he releases as long as I use IOS. They happen to be worth the investment but as you may now we tend to buy more apps than we will ever use so if money is tight it's wise to exercise due diligence like @jwmmakerofmusic has performed here. But if you have the funds please respect @Micheal's labor and creativity.

Once that guided tour was over with, I forked over the 30 quid. 😂 I recorded a couple of stupid mouth noise loops, adjusted the settings to fit my workflow, re-recorded the mouth noise loops, and my mind is completely blown. Sliders control internal AND AUv3 effects! Game changer! AUM is serviceable for live looping, but constantly diving into AUv3 interfaces in AUM on a 5th Gen iPad Mini is a pain in the arse, even with the slowest and longest loops.

    Awesomeness!

the streambyter is for randomizing parameters in sunvox.

There are a select number of apps that make iOS undeniable: Loopy Pro, AUM, Drambo, Borderlands, Koala and BM3 to name some of the apps that have influenced hardware/desktop/laptop guys to buy an iPad to make music.

The original Beatmaker popped my iPad cherry 😂 I always wanted an MPC and seeing Beatmaker was a dream come true! Loopy Pro is one of those “dream come true” apps for many including myself!

  • Loopy Pro is on my back burner, TBH.

Tried it for awhile, had some traction, but still felt like more learning curve on a computer than I'm motivated to face for now.

Right now, iOS is mostly for virtual instruments and AUM.

WOW, this is amazing. Like TouchOSC, but on steroids.

  • Oh, I thought it was 19.99 USD. I guess it’s 30 maybe there was a sale or maybe I was confused with the annual renewal for continued updates. I need to give it a try, but I keep on holding off for when I can focus on trying it with the trial. I have a bit too much going on currently.

  • Great thread!

That’s interesting! Would you mind getting in touch about that? I’d like to get some extra detail, possibly a sample project or repro steps if that’s achievable.

Can you tell me more about what you were hoping for? Might be something that belongs on the roadmap.

  • I’m feeling bad that I’m a bit late to the party here and @jwmmakerofmusic ’s already laid down his hard-earned, but I want to put this here: if you are being held back from getting Loopy Pro because you can’t afford it, reach out to me.

I’ve been thinking about ways to communicate that, as I’d like to enable those that are really struggling for money to get LP too… I just haven’t quite figured out where to say that yet.
