New app development from midiSequencer dev - midi file editor/recorder

  • @midisequencer I'm really intrigued by this app, as none of the pure MIDI sequencers on the iPad have satisfied my need for a traditional (and boring :D) way to capture ideas in MIDI, not audio. There are lots of apps with potential, but in the end they all are fiddly and drive me nuts (not a good combo when most iPad sketches are made at my desk during a break, on the metro, etc.).

  • @syrupcore - It's not a pressing need. I'm badly addicted to duplicating synth and rhythm apps, so with a utility app where it becomes the central "funnel" through which other apps are programmed, I don't want purchase a bunch of $10 apps that I don't use. BeatMaker is a HUGE file and if I was convinced Genome worked like it claims to, I'd have bought it already.

Tony's Analog MidiSequencer app isn't the type of interface I use all the time, but it works like it's supposed to and he continues to support it. I'll gladly wait for this grid sequencer app, which I will probably get even more use out of!

  • ^ I'd lend you my copy of Genome if I could. :D

  • Yeah, I've given up on Genome, have been working in Yamaha Mobile Music Sequencer a lot lately. It's not perfect, but interesting and pretty powerful - amazing built-in sounds, which is nice.

Slightly tangential to this thread. Has anyone been able to control the BM2 drum-style sampler via midi from another app? I can't seem to get it to trigger from MMS.

  • Yep, you can, it starts at note 0 if I remember right, lower than standard GM settings normally found.

  • @stormJH1 - Although this is primarily a midi (100+ bar) editor, I still want to be able to allow the user to lock onto a fixed number of beats and use it as a groove machine interactively.
I agree it's a different approach to midiSequencer which is more of a programmable arpeggiator. This will be much more interactive and shareable with other users and midi programs.

  • @stormjh1 I just assumed you owned them both!

  • Thx, @cal. I'm not sure if I'm missing a setting on BM2 or MMS, but not getting any sound from the sampler anywhere on the keyboard. I'll keep fiddling, but if anyone has any ideas...

  • If you haven't already, in the settings area on your device, in the Beatmaker 2 area, make sure you have "Enable Virtual Ports" on. Then from there, making sure that MidiSequencer is enabled as an input within BM2. And in MIDI Sequencer, make sure you're at the lowest octave possible (if you're trying to trigger the drum sampler).

  • That sounds like the step I'm missing. I haven't yet found "Enable Virtual Ports" in BM2. Thx!

  • hey, i really love your app. i'm just gonna put this out here since you seem to be open to some musician needs:
i want to use my ipad onstage more, but i'm surprised at how rare MIDI-learn functionality is in ios music apps. true, the ipad is a great input device, but my perfect ipad rig involves using a couple programs simultaneously and program-switching is whack. the process just cannot be streamilined enough.
for instance, tapping tempo w a connected MIDI device into a sequencer that sends clock to other running programs is an almost completely unavailable function on the ipad.
perhaps i have been changed forever by using ableton, but it seems that a good sequencer could easily offer advanced transport options (even nudge and bpm increment/decrement) that can be midi-mapped.
also, MIDI clips that can be launched by a MIDI controller (ala ableton) seems like a sequencer style that is just waiting to happen.
sorry if i'm off topic a little but i love messing around w midisequencer and as i perform w ableton in NYC i often think about what it would take to get me onstage w just my ipad, launchkeys and guitar and these are the holdups.
just an fyi to you cause i can tell you care.

@Taylortronic. Funny you should mention that - next version of midiSequencer will offer more control of the transport via midi (You can only do tempo(as a slave), or load snapshot or switch app via midi at the moment - I always meant to increase this.

Midi clips are slightly different but when the rack version is released there will be a song mode which will feature patterns (= midi clips).

Also in the next release is the ability to have up to 16 CC's per step and you can define each of these to be a CC, NRPN (2-byte) or RPN(sort of 2-byte), program change or sysex (hex message).

  • No Questions or requests! I just wanted to say this sounds like it could be the missing link and I'm really excited about it. Ok, I lied, I have 1 question - how close is it to coming out (roughly, of course)?

  • edited August 2014

    @Charloi - finishing off midiSequencer update first (16 CC's including NRPN/RPN/Prog Chg/Sysex/Aftertouch/Pitchbend).
If you are asking about song mode/midi clips etc, will get back to iMidi this weekend - sorry most indie developers have day jobs. You are probably looking at september release for iMidi.

    @midiSequencer

Hey Tony. There's been a few new midi editing apps released lately, but I'm holding out for iMIDI.

Not putting the rush on you, just wanted to ask how progress was going?

And also to thank you for all the cool stuff you added to Midisequencer recently.

    Hope all is well. Cheers

  • @midiSequencer Hope you don't mind Tony, but I saw your post over at IPad musicians group on Facebook and saw your pics of a very cool development for midiSequencer and iMIDI and know that peeps like @Syrupcore are gonna be stoked with these. Could you maybe comment a bit on them like you did over on FBook? Cheers. These look truly amazing! Thank you.

  • I had trouble viewing pics from my AB post so trying these from Tapatalk

  • So right @spookyzoo! WAAAAAAAAAAANT.

  • Looks like Auxy de luxe.

    First thought here too...

  • Your thinking too small chaps - think more abelton live - clip playing with follow actions, but each clip is an instance of midiSequencer (16 steps, variable start/end, up to 8 midi fx, up to 16 CC's and a tempo that is a division of the song tempo).
This version will have midiSequencer as an editor - just select a clip, press edit and you can edit on the fly even whilst playing.
There will be a version with a different editor - piano-roll style, midi files, embedded time signatures & tempo change, massive number of notes & CC's, realtime recording....

  • interested!

  • Guys, for the slow of wit like me, are there any good step-by-step (see what I did there?) tutorials? I watched Colin's video and that was good, but need real a real dum dum walkthrough to better understand the possibilities. I'm even just talking about the current version, not the latest future updates. Thx.

@midiSequencer When you say 'ableton live' are you saying you can play more than one mS clip/instance at a time? Are the rows/columns significant?

  • @MoonWolf I'm with you on this. Something for us slower kids at the back of the class....

  • edited February 2015

Video sessions still on my list to do, I've made a start though.

@Syrupcore - yes you will be able to play up to 25 at once, or have them chained using the follow logic. There will be a number of modes available (e.g. play them all, use clip follow logic, play just the touched clip).
All of this will be seemless - so you can play one long sequence of up to 400 notes say. It supports tempo changes too - so you each clip could be at a different tempo (as a division of the song tempo - so 2/1 will mean 120BPM if the song tempo is 60BPM).

Ableton Live clips only have one follow action (e.g. play next clip after delay of x beats), but this app will allow clips to have alot more choices rather than just one.

The rows/cols are not significant you can place a clip anywhere and drag n drop it (or swap places) with other clips. Clip follow logic can use relative or absolute grid slot positions. The clips can be renamed but default to Clip 1,2,3 etc when you first create them.

  • This could be seriously huge! Great work.

  • Is it a new app or a midisequencer extension? Looks very nice but can I use it as a midi looper?

  • shitballs. I want it. Godspeed!

  • @Korakios - both. Think of midiSequencer as just the 'clip editor'.
The new app will work more as a piano roll - but this song mode will be the same.
