Ahh! That sounds exciting if it comes to fruition. Thanks so much for the explanation.
Building a car with Apple's superiority complex will be lots of fun:
But it will look nice and be very silent.
The new M2 MacBook Air looks really nice and it's got the new and improved 3.5mm jack
But for now it's leaning towards a 256GB 11" WiFi iPadPro, Smart Cover and Apple Pencil and some kind of PD Dock but not just yet. (Already got the BIG Apple BT keyboard with F-Keys and Magic Mouse which are both handy for SunVox etc.).
But yeah, my iPad Air 2's battery is at <50% capacity now and lasts for ~1 hour max from full charge...
...so I keep it constantly plugged-in...
Cheers!
Having third party drivers on iPad is big news.
Also, having an option to increase the pixel density in addition to the new memory allocation, or global copy and paste makes that finally some major players like Ableton or Bitwig may consider to create iOS versions of their DAWS in the near future.
Indeed, I won't be surprised if Ableton is already working on this. This will explain the AUv3 support in the recent desktop beta. They have make this move at the same time that Apple has removed most of the restrictions on iPad OS, like including real external monitor support for multitasking.
Ableton now has all its code ported to ARM, AUv3 support for iOS apps on desktop. Imagine an Ableton Live version whose only restriction is not including Max for Live. In which you can import your iOS projects to the desktop, with all the configured AUv3s units.
Apple probably has been working with a selected number of relevant developers, informing them of some of the new APIs in advance. With the idea of announcing some desktop class apps for iPad.
I don't know if it will be Ableton, Logic Pro or some other app. But at the beginning of 2023, when Apple will announce the new iPad Pro with a M2 chip, I'm sure that it will come with the announcement of some of these pro apps. With the idea of releasing them on Winter 2023.
It makes sense. In 2021, they released an iPad which is as powerful as a Mac.
In 2022, they have adapted the APIs to make use of all this power.
And a year after this, releasing the first apps taking advantage of this. With a larger user base. And at the same time that the applications are released in Winter 2023, with an iPad Pro with the M2 chip on the market, bringing the old M1 to some entry devices.
Just pulled the trigger on a MacBook Pro 14’’, as Curry’s were doing it for £169 off. Has everything I need - 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, and the M1 Pro is faster than the M2 in the new Air. It’s a little bit more expensive than the pimped out M2 Air I was looking at, but seems like a better machine for what I’ll use it for.
Welp, all my apple devices have become unsupported* in one big swoop :’) iPad Air 2, Macbook 2016 and iPhone 7 (although the latter I haven’t been using for years since it’s battery pooped out). And it’ll probably be quite a while before I’ll have the means to get something new, so crying a bit on the inside xD
But aside from that I am very happy and excited to see the updates, lot’s of really nice things! It’s cool to see the stuff like full second display support and window management finally being here, that used to be such a vague and far away into the future idea ‘maybe one day the iPad will be kinda be like a mac’. We’ve already been slowly moving there step by step, but for some reason this was kind off the picture I had in my head back then so it feels more ‘real’ now.
And I’m really looking forward to seeing all the new stuff that’ll happen when it comes to music app development! I’ve been amazed with how well the dev’s here are able to get the best out of new features and such
*not the right word, there’ll still be safety updates and such offc. And end of updates does not mean unusable, heck my good old iPod video and white ‘09 macbook still work surprisingly well! :P
It’d be funny if it wasn’t true
Yes, they'll remove all the ports (doors) so you won't even be able to get in the thing....and of course everything will be glued down so you can't replace anything.
Continuity Camera in QuickTime allows you to capture video with your iPhone directly into QuickTime movies. iPhone shows in Audio MIDI Setup too when Continuity Camera is enabled. I didn't place my phone in a stand - you can place it or move it around live as you like. You can still select a different audio input in the QuickTime movie, nice to take advantage of the phone camera, and record the audio elsewhere. And it seems once Continuity Camera is enabled, it persists as an input option until you manually disconnect - so you can always select it as an audio input option on the Mac - mine shows as 1 Ch. 48khz. **Edit, didn't notice that Continuity also shows on the iPhone - you can Disconnect it there or in QuickTime.
We clearly see eye to eye on this. 🤝
This is already possible in current and previous versions of macOS. Not the automatic webcam part, of course. But the rest of it.
Yes, Continuity Camera behaves the same other A/V input devices in QuickTime. Nothing new about the behavior, just confirming it works the same, other than showing as an input device in AMS, which allows it to be used as audio input like any device, outside of QT and the like. You could always record the iPhone screen into QT - but not as a webcam, without being tethered.
I still hope we'll some day be able to do screen-recordings with a PiP from the front-camera or the iPhone on the iPad without any additional software. For starters all that would be needed is a PiP mode for the built-in camera.app...
The original rumors for the Apple car from what feels like a decade ago had no steering wheel in the v1 version.
The most important feature of an Apple Car would be that all repair work would have to be done be registered Apple Mechanics and uploaded to Apple for signing and purchase via subscription on the Apple Car Store.
Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on the REALLY dumb stuff they were doing under design director Jony Ive. They've reversed a lot of the dumbest stuff he was doing for their hardware since he no longer works there (with the exception of still not having a 1/8" audio jack for the iPad Pro models).
Ive was unjustly praised for his work at Apple when it became abundantly clear to me that it was Steve Jobs who was 100% responsible for the decisions when he was alive and then Apple became completely rudderless with Ive in charge.
External monitor support is cool. Best new thing to me is actually allowing compatibility with Nintendo switch joycons. And No Man’s Sky coming later this year to ipad.
Yes, can be checked. But only if you can connect it to a Macbook (Pro).
Download the free Coconut Battery for your Mac and connect iDevice with a cable to it...

Actually any Mac will do when using Coconut Battery, no need for 'laptops'.

It is for everyone
The transition isnt nearly as bad as people think its gonna be. As for charging, things charge a bazillion times faster now. You'll plug your new phone in for 15min and get another 3+ hours out of it. You could be using it during that charging. As the lady often says, "why not put down AUM for a second, and while you're charging your ipad, use the fitness app for once"
tried beta…Delighted with the external monitor support…this is a bigger deal than expected
Any video demo you’d care to post?
Oh I’m definitely too lazy at the moment for that…just dabbling on my day off from work right now.
How does that work when no external keyboard or mouse is connected?
My buddy demoed it for me as well last night. Its still a bit buggy now, but it really is gonna be huge improvement
So far it seems to just mirror ipad at ipad resolution (no full screen) so stage manager effectively disabled… But this could be a beta 1 limitation
Edit: stage manager still works, mirrored of course but there’s no scaling to external display
