I’ve just tried myself with external monitor to my iPad Pro M1 (12.9”) - as you said, it ain’t working with full screen and right scaling without any keyboard/mouse…
Tried both my 4K screens, one Dell 32” and one 25”, both pretty expensive…
I know. You can also use iMazing for MacOS, with that you can export a very detailed report of your iPad battery.
I think Jonatan mentioned bi-directional host to AUv3 communication is now available, one of the missing AUv3 features so that's something positive at least
I‘ve read that DriverKit will be available with iOS 16 for M1 tablets. Couldn‘t this mean a lot for hardware that isn’t MIDI or audio class-compliant? I don’t have a clue how much effort it is then to port MacOS drivers to iOS. But yeah, using my Maschine or Fireface UC with an iPad would be very nice.
Edit: sorry, that is already covered in this thread. I was sure I had read it all…
If the Mac driver is written with the AudioDriverKit then the project is supposed to work on iPadOS 16 without change.
PCIDriverKit and USBDriverKit also work on iPadOS 16, so some other types of music related devices should be supportable. PCIDriverKit will allow for Thunderbolt based interfaces for example.
Note that at least in the beta notes, these are specified for M1 based iPads only. At least some of the limitations to M1 devices looks like it's tied to the swap memory support which appears to depend on the memory controller in the M1.
Four days with iPadOS16 beta 1 now, and, I’m impressed in total, although there are some bugs here and there…
But, on my 12.9” M1 iPad everything is stable and fluid…
Two thing that’s not working for me - can’t use the full screen option on external display, just mirroring with black borders as it always have worked…
Tested on both my 4K monitors with mouse installed on the iPad, but no success…
The other thing that disturb me is the old feature to ‘jump to the top’ if you point your finger on top of the screen to scroll to the beginning, in Safari, mail, Tweetbot etc etc…
This doesn’t work in Stage Manager Mode unfortunately…
Overall - iPadOS16 is fantastic!
How is Stage Manager?
Stage Manager is GREAT!!
Also great is that is easy to jump between full screen and ”Windows mode”…
If you hesitate to upgrade to iPadOS16 - go on!!
This made it not easier for me
I wanted to join the beta next month, but Stage Manager is a big plus.
Anyone who depends on their iPad for work should not download a beta. They should never download a beta to any computer or iOS device.
That's obvious....and maybe @ErrkaPetti knows what he is doing. I'm gone dive in too, and if it's not working I will restore the previous version. I feel just like @timapple : 'so exited'
Oh beta1 is definitely pretty crashy… Very very beta. Proceed with caution ☺️
@ErrkaPetti What are your experiences with iPadOS beta 1, also pretty crashy?
I’m on a 6s iPhone trying to hold out until September to get a iPhone 13 at a discounted price. When they drop new stuff in September they usually discount all the previous models.
For me iPadOS16 beta 1 is stable enough to use both Drambo/Synthmaster 2 and Affinity Photo/Designer - same stability as 15.6…
The only thing not working for me is external display…
Thanks, that's good enough for me.

ios16 sneak…
Lumafusion on external 4k display scales perfectly feels like a desktop app. They seem to have anticipated this development.
Regarding iPadOS16 etc...
Those on beta, please do forward to Apple that an option to safely eject hard-drives and memory cards is needed to avoid data-corruption which seems to be an issue. iPadOS16 also needs a tool for Format memory cards and hard-drives as well as a 'First Disk Aid' type of tool in case the storage device gets corrupted.
With HDMI devices connected to a HUB the need to be able to select which Audio Device to use is needed as HDMI also carries audio and can 'hijack' the Audio Interface if it's connected after the Audio Interface.
Stage Manager apparently only needs a pointing device to work so It should in theory be possible to use the iPad as a 'Keyboard + Trackpad' when using an external monitor.
Oh well, iPadOS is not macOS...
...at least not yet...
The level of pretentious BS with this company is remarkable. I clicked the link and it goes "groundbreaking new features" and then the very first, absolutely killer highlight for ios16 is "a reimagined Lock Screen lets you personalize your iPhone with a dazzling variety of fonts, colors, and widgets". In other words, welcome to Android from 10 years ago. 🤷
This has been one of my biggest gripes with iPadOS/iOS in general. I want to be able to select what audio output I want to use on my own and not worry about what's been plugged in last.
