I want the iPolysix.
@Aphex - the iPolysix sounds great and is very nice
It is indeed nice. It also took me (don't follow my error in other words) a good while to realize that the sequencer can be made to do nice things...
I've been interested in Gadget for a long time and this is the first sale I can remember, but I have concerns about performance on iPad2.
Is it true Gadget only works in portrait mode, wtf?!?!
Works perfectly fine for me (in portrait mode only) on an ipad 2
Hopefully this means there is an update coming for Gadget. Last one was in February.
Also, isn't iPolysix normally $29.99, and Gadget $39.99? That's not 50% off.
I don't think any of the Korg apps rotate.
I'm optimistic that the next Gadget update is worth the long waiting. Maybe it's an indicator that Korg will deliver most of the missing stuff like landscape mode, sampling and synchronization.
I've got all minus the Gorrilaz one and they all rule. Highly recommended.

I'm optimistic too, I can't imagine Korg slacking off on it. They are always working on something cool, they just announced Korg DSN 12 - really cool looking analog synth software for Nintendo 3DS.

The message from Korg is that all apps are up to 50% off.
I wouldn't be too fussed about the others, but if you don't have Gadget, I can definitely recommend it. An easy to use "All In One" recording environment, plus most of the gadgets just sound so good!
I'd love universal apps from them.

Good to hear. Sale is on until 7/14 so there's a little time.
I know that it has AudioBus now, but how does AudioCopy/Paste work? Is it convenient enough to bounce a particular section/measure to a loop?
I have Caustic and like it quite a bit for arranging music, but the internals synths and other sounds aren't special compared to standalone apps. I've heard the Gadget stuff is amazing.
Now if only Gadget and Caustic somehow had a bastard best of both love child.....
You may just get the worst of both - no telling with mixing of genes!
Gadget is so awesome. I'm really looking forward to the next update. Hopefully now that their new Gameboy cartridge is out their software division is focusing on Gadget.
Isn't it a pain to play a keyboard in portrait mode? Otherwise I'd probably buy this app.
Gadget not having landscape is the most overblown non-problem I have ever seen - if you actually USE the app you immediately understand why the portrait layout is locked in- it is designed to work this way- keys+seq+knobs - and I find I have more control over the keyboard with gadget than apps with giant full landscape keys-

Unless you use a dock that forces landscape mode and portrait is hard. Say like the Focusrite iTrack Dock, Aleisis IO Dock, Synthstation 49...
I've been considering getting the app but people on the Nanostudio forum complain about the piano roll being difficult. Hard to grab notes and stuff. Anyone care to share their experiences?
@Ripper said:
Fair point except that there's very little keyboard playing the way that I use Gadget, and the way they seem to steer you to use it. The synths give you a piano roll to program notes, and a keyboard with a dozen keys or so that can is set to notes in your key, but maybe not every note sequentially.
So, yeah, it's kind of crummy if you want to play it like a traditional keyboard,but few apps aren't on a glass screen. I tend to create ideas in apps like gadget and caustic that I wouldn't necissarily think of on a keyboard.

That criticism is fair, I guess, but it's a matter of preference. I used Caustic for months before getting Gadget, and I actually like Gadget better. Not only does it look better, but it doesn't require the number of button presses to do what you want compared to Caustic.
If you have "quantize" on, it will drop a note on the grid for the size of one step (or whatever you designate). Once dropped, you touch and hold near the edge of it and you can drag to lengthen the note. In Caustic, you had to click a "size" button first that would allow you to expand or contract the notes. I always thought that was a pain. The one annoyance I've found with Gadget is that if you want a note that sustains from one beat/measure to the next, you have to basically place the note, and then pick it back up again to drag it off the screen. (See picture below)
The fact that the measures are on separate screens might certainly annoy some people who are used to scroll. It has some annoyances with it, but also makes it faster to navigate.
Of course, if you are in record mode, it will put notes on the grid for exactly when (and how long) you played them. So you can basically sketch out a melody first and then move things to correct it.
Does the touch screen occasionally not respond? Sure. But it's also pretty easy to drag a missed note or delete an undesired note quickly.
I've really enjoyed the app, but even 28 dollars U.S. (the sale price) is no small investment. The quality of sounds in Gadget is significantly better than Caustic. I've started forum topics here looking for good synth apps with bass sounds or particular types of sounds - I've found new or better versions of a lot of those within Gadget. There are 15 machines and each of them has like 24-48 presets. That's a lot of stuff. The one weak point is that you can't import your own, but that's just part of the open-source/indie greatness that is Caustic. Hope this helps

the sequencer in Gadget and track management/flow/note editing is my favourite of the many apps I own... If it gets audio import or some simple sample import gadget, i'll use it ALOT more to arrange and produce my tracks. Don't really have any issues that bug me that much in regards to editing/moving notes and loops. I hope this rumoured audio import comes soon!! My guess is early fall - maybe even November...

That would be a killer feature! An audio track (for recording vocals, guitar, etc) is another rumored update that would make it almost DAW-like, but I'm okay using it as a groovebox or content generator because it works well in AB.
That helps immensely. Thanks a lot @stormjh1. Yeah, caustic is fiddly in its own way and has too many button presses for my taste. I still prefer the NanoStudio style drag handles instead of futzing with 'Am I tapping this thing (which I can't see because my finger is on it) in the right place?' to do some edit.
I didn't realize you could only ever see a measure at a time. I think that might indeed frustrate the life out of me!
I understand that you can't import your own samples. A bummer but not a deal breaker. You can save your own presets on the instruments though, yes?
And yeah, an audio track or two would be wonderful.
@syrupcore said:
You can see more than one measure at a time- you just pinch in the area that shows 1.1 1.2 1.3 etc
@syrupcore said:
As you probably saw from the other thread, we may be a few weeks away from a new update, according to Korg, so that's exciting.
Yes, I believe you can save your own presets - someone else can correct me if I'm wrong. (I'm still relatively new to Gadget). The presets in Gadget are really good though. The portrait view is unpopular, but they use the screen space really well. I hate the scrolling in Caustic - I tend to do it by accident a lot, and it's annoying to have to go to a new screen to change your sounds versus seeing the piano roll.
I haven't used NanoStudio's piano roll in awhile (but remember it being good) - Gadget is probably similar to that in that there are "handles" on or near the edges of note blocks, you just can't see them. I happened to see that NS forum thread you referenced, and I just don't agree with the one or two people who described the experience as horrible. It's probably my favorite piano roll to work in, though if they made a few changes to improve it, I'd be all for that, too. Nice little touches in there too, like each note block pulsing as it is played in time - makes it easy to follow where you are in the sequence and identify a wrong note.
Thanks a lot @zymos and @stormjh1. Off to break my no-new-apps rule. Again.
Sorry it wasn't a 99 cent one then...
You can save your own presets in Gadgets
