A discussion about tags on Social Media

Like dude, I’m super glad you’re making content again, but it’s kinda hard to do research when I get 20 notifications telling me “Check out this new plugin…”

So, I have a problem with tags. They’re a necessary tool to alert others, and use them as a marketing tool, but it’s also problematic for others.

Here’s the problem…if I make a post/giveaway encouraging others to tag others, it leads to an endless stream of notifications for specific people. And that may not seem like a big deal, but some people use the notification system to do specific research, or filter out results that are more relevant to their interests.

If I did a similar thing over here on the Audiobus community, I’d get flagged as a click baiter. Why do we then allow the same practice on other social media platforms?

Edit: Yeah, I’m in a cranky mood today. Lost a close family member so it’s been a bit of a drag this month.

  • Mate if you ever need to talk or someone to listen, hit me up in the PMs. See, I've lost both parents (Mom on 4 November 2018, and Dad on 29 December 2019), and though I'm feeling more at peace, the first year or two after was hell. I don't wish it on anybody. My condolences. I'm sorry for your loss.

As far as @Gavinski goes, a PM here or on one of the socials might be the better way to go about it.

I would never have gotten so into iOS music if it weren't for Gavinsky.
But yeah losing close family can obliterate one’s otherwise warm nature some days. Really sorry to hear it.

You can stay subscribed and turn off Notifications I think. Just click the Bell icon on any video and it should stop notifying you. If I'm wrong let me know.

Making a YoutTube channel pay for itself requires attracting attention as I'm sure @seonnthaproducer knows and also works to get his stats up.

I think YouTube tracks the Subscriptions and Views as essential data so WATCHING is the most important contribution you can make to support a Forum superstar along with @jakoB_haQ, @sfm, @MobileMusicPro and the OG Doug @thesoundtestroom.

Why not send Gavinski a PM if you'd like him to do something differently? And maybe consider what you want to achieve by posting publicly like this rather than through a personal contact ... by making your point publicly you might not generate the goodwill needed to have your concerns addressed.

    And sorry for your loss!

It's good to have a public hearing on an issue that impacts workflow. If @seonnthaproducer needs to leave notification on then this would be a good issue to see address via consensus.
Personally I try to keep notifications off to maintain focus.

I'm not sure how #hashtags weigh into the conversation but I'd like learn more about how to use them and avoid being a victim of the tech.

  • When I start getting annoyed by stuff like that I know it’s time to step back from social media and just chill for a bit offline for a couple days. I’ve done it hundreds of times here when seeing every other thread with the word “Drambo” in its title every day (kidding, sorta, not 😂).

Sorry for your loss, take some time to yourself to deal with it. No need to be online if it’s just aggravating you.

First of all sorry for your loss.

But take this shit to the DM’s…. No need to do this on a public forum. Do better.

  • Here's what I mean by tagging a post...

Let's say I make a post on the Audiobus forum about a giveaway.

I then mention to @ people at the forum for the giveaway for a chance to win.

Seems innocent, right? Except, everyone will get at least 20 notifications.

Well, this is happening on Instagram, and other social media.

I mean, if we're cool with it, and accept that as a norm then that's good. I'm mentioning it here, and putting my reputation on the line because it's really annoying to get swamped with posts on platform like Instagram and Twitter.

Or, maybe I'm not seeing a particular perspective of this practice. Feel free to enlighten, but let's have a civil discussion. That's why I made this post.

  • Chill discussion ????? you personally called out Gavin in your thread title on a public form that should’ve been handled privately if you have a problem with some of that mute the notifications.

  • @onerez said:

This is obviously more complicated than just "too many notifications."

  • @onerez Yeah, I did. I actually started a discussion on a topic so we can all understand how to handle scenarios like this.

Sometimes we need to have talks like this as a community, else a lot of things will get swept under the rug.

Also, I'm expecting a ton of strong criticism from this post.

That said, hope you have a great day @onerez 👍

What app/service sends the notifications and why 20 copies? I'm just trying to understand the tech at work here.

Do they copies come from quoted text in replies on the forum or some other mechanism.
If it's something that can be demonstrated in this thread that would help me.

@McDtracy wants more details. @seonnthaproducer might have clues. (Now I will look for notifications on various devices.)

UPDATE: I had notifications turned off on this iPad. @McD trying again. I also have 2 handles in the database.

    Okay, let's say I make a post...

    1. Person 1 tags McD and seonnthaproducer
    2. Person 2 tags person 1, and McD
    3. Person 3 tags person 1, McD, and person 2

    and so on...

Result: McD has 3 new notifications on the same post.
Person 1 has 2 new notifications

It's an interesting advertisement strategy but it's really annoying for the people on the receiving end.

  • OK. Are these the Forum Notifications… they seem to pop up lower left for a couple seconds and go away requiring me to click the Bell to read them. Are the audible when you’re working or annoying in some other way?

Maybe this strategy helps Gavinski continue to create the tutorials videos most of us appreciate. Perhaps it helps generate income to support his efforts. Sorry for your loss, I pray things get better.

So, how is person one responsible for 2 and 3? Can we teach people to use @ with more
Discretion and not single out the OP to avoid @‘ing at all?

If I’m missing the complete picture… help me out. I will seek to use or even quote @‘s more carefully myself.

So, Gavinski is Person 1 and he is being asked not to use @ tagging? This pattern happens frequently on the forum with text quoting, right? It how you can know someone replied to something you wrote.

I'm using the forum as an example. It's less about the technical workaround, and more about the practice.

If I did something similar here, I'd be flooded with posts about it being clickbaity.

(On Instagram, I've already tried blocking my name from being tagged, but it still goes through. Which is really annoying because I have some industry contacts who I cant even reach)

The best way to explain tags is this...anytime I (or anyone else) mentions your name with a @, you get a notification. If 10 people do that, you get 10 notifications.

@Stuntman_mike So, are we cool if I employ a similar tactic on the forum?

    Good question for @Michael

  • I’m still trying to understand what the “tactic” is? Is it a list of @names getting echo’ed by 20 readers? I’m going to scan a few content creators threads and see if they avoid quoting @names as a general rule. Perhaps these “give-away” lists could just drop the @ for this one use case. Would that help?

I am sooo scratching my head here why, if one person is doing something that annoys another person, the first stop is to launch some kind of community town hall to have a heart-to-heart discussion about it? That just seems bizarre to me. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Is this some kind of epidemic that a wider discussion is needed to raise social consciousness of? Maybe it is. This forum being the closest I come to the cesspits of social media, maybe I'm just too out of the loop. But I'm also confused as to why this forum is the place to post about an issue that seems to be centered on Instagram and other social media platforms?

Sorry for your loss @seonnthaproducer. I don't mean to add to your grief by posting my bewilderment over your comment. I'm just kind of puzzled by it.

The point is that it encourages new people to click on the same post, and the people tagged will keep opening up the same post.

It definitely helps the algorithm, but is a bad experience for the people who are tagged more than once.

I’m not sure. I thought I understood and tried to rationalize it.

Reading the title @seonnthaproducer is asking for tagging on "Instagram" and "Social Media" (Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc)... that's the tactic he is requesting be changed by Person 1. Seems reasonable to call that out. True?

Of course, the @Person can avoid notifications by not signing up for free apps. That might work right? Just working both ends of the issue.

I mean I know when I must create an account to register a product that I'm going to hear from the vendors marketing department... again and again. "Waves Audio" was a nightmare for me before I just started using special email account(s) for all registration requests.

Yeah. It's already happening on those platforms and I'm trying to prevent it from happening here as well.

To clarify, Person 1, Person 2, and Person 3 are commenters, similar to McD and seonnthaproducer in the example above. I used those names as placeholders.

  • I'm changing my forum name to @Person_1.

  • I'll reserve @Person_2 if that's OK with everyone?

(@seonnthaproducer sorry for your loss too ... always difficult when it's someone who's emotionally close...)
