Just to put my point of view about this...really this should have been taken care of in the background..if it's an etiquette thing then it should be sorted out with the administrators and the party responsible. If it needs to expand from there as a general question then OK. This feels like more of a 1) mud sling and 2) a bit of personal promotion...egos anyone? Of course it's also helping to promote the target too isn't it?

I'd consider @Not_a_Person if this becomes a thing with a race to grab the lowest number.
Or maybe @Not_a_Person_1 so others can also protest just being a number.

  • Finally a useful conversation I can comment on!

  • It seems to me that if you have a beef with someone, writing to them is more effective than calling them out by name in a thread title... I urge OP to change the thread title.

  • Being able to control interrupts will become more and more important in an age where our tech is seeking to create more addicts. People get hooked on certain forms of stimulus...
this forum being a prime example.

"I'm Dave and I'm an ABF abuser."
"Fuck off, Dave" the standard reply from one of the first meetings.

If the tagging is unwelcome, shouldn’t it come from @persona non grata

This^ I check that shit on my time.

  • This seems like a very reasonable solution @CapnWillie . Thank you.

  • This forum is the only ‘social media’ I do. Can’t stomach everything else and stay well away from it all, don’t need it.
Youtube is useful to me, but all notifications are off.
Soundcloud is alright as communication is very limited, so I don’t really count it as ‘social media’ in the sense of things like twatter, foolsbook and instaspam.

I guess it’s a bit of a double-edged sword if you need to use ‘social media’ for promoting yourself and your work. On the one hand you need notifications to keep up with things and be alerted to feedback, on the other hand, you will also receive many notifications that perhaps are not so desired. It comes with the territory.

Fair point. I get where you’re coming from. Alright, I’ve edited the post.

  • I've turned off most of the notifications on all apps and platforms as I find the notification alerts to be distracting and annoying and not 'helpful' as their initial intention is or was.

In forums the 'un-asked-for @ posts' trying to grab the attention of specific users is also starting to get on my nerve.
Especially since these notifications multiply when someone quotes or replies to a post where multiple persons are mentioned.

I do get that 'selective quoting' can lead to major misunderstands as we do not have access to the entire discussion without backtracking several pages and it just de-rails the discussion from the initial from the topic and in the end leads to 'whataboutism' in it's worst form.

But for the love of forum sanity remove the @'s from the threads in the reply if only one person is the target.

    Cheers!

  • Also wanted to say thanks to @jwmmakerofmusic @BirbHope @McD @craftycurate @Tarekith @onerez @LinearLineman @CracklePot @Stuntman_mike @wim @Mountain_Hamlet . Can’t properly respond to all but I really do appreciate the messages. Doing a lot better than earlier this month…and I’m a lot more rested since the beginning of this post.

Okay, back on topic… If I decided to re-quote this post, or someone replies to this comment, everyone here mentioned gets notified and it’ll be a bit unfair to the other parties. Right now, I’m getting bombarded with these notifications for the past week.

EDIT: I guess a temporary solution would be to make a separate private account for research purposes. But, I’m more concerned about where we draw the line on promotional tagging of people.

It is welcome input that more thought about the results of just quoting a whole big post. I never thought about it much.

I find that editing down a quote on the phone is super problematic, but on the desktop or iPad it's not too bad.

On the other hand, in this forum, as soon as you tap on that notification icon, the notifications go away. So multiple notifications are no big deal unless you have email notifications enabled (which is nuts IMO :D ).

Other social media? You get what you deserve if you go there! :p
Blissfully free from all that rot here.

  • I didn’t see the OG post but it looks like you called out a friend.

My POV and I’ll call it like I see it - you’re coming off really jealous of GaV and it’s showing. I understand losing someone but it’s no excuse to bring your pain into someone else’s life.

Like dude, I’m super glad you’re making content again, but it’s kinda hard to do research when I get 20 notifications telling me “Check out this new plugin…”

So, I have a problem with tags. They’re a necessary tool to alert others, and use them as a marketing tool, but it’s also problematic for others.

Here’s the problem…if I make a post/giveaway encouraging others to tag others, it leads to an endless stream of notifications for specific people. And that may not seem like a big deal, but some people use the notification system to do specific research, or filter out results that are more relevant to their interests.

If I did a similar thing over here on the Audiobus community, I’d get flagged as a click baiter. Why do we then allow the same practice on other social media platforms?

Edit: Yeah, I’m in a cranky mood today. Lost a close family member so it’s been a bit of a drag this month.

Sorry to hear about the family member Seonn - the solution to the problem you describe is very easy though: just ask people to stop tagging you. It's that simple. I wouldn't imagine tons of ppl are tagging you regarding my Insta posts. I have also asked some ppl to stop tagging me on twitter, for example. It took two seconds and they never tagged me again.

Okay, hang on there, you’re making assumptions here.

It’s like diving into a meeting and saying “I wasn’t here for the past 5 hours but here’s what I think…”

I’m super glad Gavinski is back and active. I’ve expressed in other threads how I’m a fan of content creators sharing their ideas.

I’m calling out the practice of promotion and the unintended inconveniences that it causes for people.

I’m using this platform as a form of conversation, as opposed to not raising the question, and burying it as part of the flow.

Is there a better way of doing it? Absolutely. There’s always a better way. Hindsight is such a powerful tool, whether it comes 1 minute or 5 hours in a conversation.

  • Problem is, this isn’t your first attempt at this

  • Be better, homie - if you don’t like notifications / turn em off

There we go. Big ups to Gavinski. That’s how you effectively resolve this.

I’ll certainly try that out. Respect, man. Hope you’re doing better. Keep up the great content.

Hey man, I appreciate the help in designing my channel banner. Let’s leave this conversation as is. No need to spew more negativity into it.

I’m trying to focus on the proper etiquette on promoting a channel in a social media platform.

I then mention to @ people at the forum for the giveaway for a chance to win.
Seems innocent, right? Except, everyone will get at least 20 notifications.

What app/service sends the notifications and why 20 copies? I'm just trying to understand the tech at work here.

Do they copies come from quoted text in replies on the forum or some other mechanism.
If it's something that can be demonstrated in this thread that would help me.

@McDtracy wants more details. @seonnthaproducer might have clues. (Now I will look for notifications on various devices.)

    Okay, let's say I make a post...

    1. Person 1 tags McD and seonnthaproducer
    2. Person 2 tags person 1, and McD
    3. Person 3 tags person 1, McD, and person 2

    and so on...

Result: McD has 3 new notifications on the same post.

It's an interesting advertisement strategy but it's really annoying for the people on the receiving end.

Maybe this strategy helps Gavinski continue to create the tutorials videos most of us appreciate. Perhaps it helps generate income to support his efforts. Sorry for your loss, I pray things get better.

I generally only do this on Insta - ask ppl to write a comment tagging two ppl they may feel would be interested in the app / giveaway. It's a way to try to build up the Insta channel. As many of you know this is a tough game. I have bust my balls with my YT, Insta and Twitter channels. I make zero money from Insta and Twitter. They're just ways to drive people to youtube. Every time i make a video, the admin alone (yt description, thumbnails, cards, posting to Facebook groups, making a separate shorter vid for Insta, writing a detailed comment on yt and on Insta etc takes a minimum 2 to 3 hours. What do i get for this? Extremely little. My yt pay for the past month is about 80 bucks and and that's only because I've been busting my balls the past week or so. I've had one PayPal donation in the past 5 months. So Seonn, again, if u don't like the Insta tagging (i never have and never would tag u by the way), just ask ppl to stop tagging you. No biggie

  • No negativity from me but you can’t expect not to be called out after calling someone else out 🤷🏿‍♀️

Reading the title @seonnthaproducer is asking for tagging on "Instagram" and "Social Media" (Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc)... that's the tactic he is requesting be changed by Person 1. Seems reasonable to call that out. True?

Of course, the @Person can avoid notifications by not signing up for free apps. That might work right? Just working both ends of the issue.

Yeah. It's already happening on those platforms and I'm trying to prevent it from happening here as well.

To clarify, Person 1, Person 2, and Person 3 are commenters, similar to McD and seonnthaproducer in the example above. I used those names as placeholders.

It's not happening here - ar least i certainly don't do it. So this is not a valid comment.

  • Example: say Gavinski was having a really bad day. His favorite app crashed on him multiple times and he’s been stressing extensively.

Then, he looks up and notices your post.

He might get frustrated about said post and stop making art because of it. Then, it FXs us poor bastards waiting for his next giveaway.

    Butterfly FX 💥

Agreed. Whenever one calls another out, it’s bound to happen.

I’m curious…what are your thoughts regarding the tagging method of promotion? I get the fact that it’s a great way to spread the word around, but it also causes the unintended side effect I’m mentioning in this thread.

Yeah, I mentioned it wasn’t done in the forums…at least not yet. But it’s something that can be done and can be abused, so I have to at least mention it.
