FWIW, King Crimson uses an iPad app called M3000 on tour. I couldn't find it in the App Store. Has its name changed?

    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/mellotronics-streetlytron-pro/id1447100877

This is the new app by the same company that produced M3000. It's IAA and AudioBus compatible, but not AUv3.

Thanks! I’ve been eyeballing that as I have Sopranotron and one of their Organs and love it. IAA only is the one thing that’s stoping me now. But who knows. I may end up owning it too lol

You know of any good ones? I have bs-16 but can’t remember if it came with any.

Can’t remember where I picked them up but they were free..

I think here - but not sure

    https://musical-artifacts.com/

Or literally just search free mellotron sf2, or sfz.

Thanks! I’ve never used soundfonts much until I got bs-16i so I’m a little out of the loop here.

I'm completely happy with the Beathawk IAP. But I'm no expert.

How many sounds does it come with? And can you edit it at all? Blending/layering sounds, adjusting EGs, etc?

Each in Raw and Stereo flavors:

    Cello
    Choir
    Church Organ
    Electric Guitar
    Flute
    Guitar 12
    Organ
    Piano
    Section Brass
    Strings
    Viola

Beathawk has Gain, Pan, Pitch, LP, HP, Reverb, Delay, and ADSR standard for all its sounds. For layering you could always load on multiple pads, or multiple AUv3 instances.

This isn't a recommendation - just what I know of the option.

Awesome thank you 🙏 if it’s the same quality as the other IAPs I’m sure it’s great. Probably gonna get this one.

Streetlytron is my fave, & I’ve tried a number (including Manetron, Module IAPs, Beathawk IAPs, etc., though not Sampletron). Well-sampled & lots of options beyond the standard meat/potatoes Mello sounds. Not AUv3, though, which is a dealbreaker for some folks.

It’s not quite a dealbreaker for me but it does have me on the fence. What all does it offer that others don’t?

Sampletron has the advantage of being extremely versatile, so I think it really is a step above most other Mellotron apps. It has a great set of samples, ADSR controls, optional tape ageing effects, and also a whole effects rack section as well. This means you can create authentic-sounding Mellotron parts, but also create more modern-sounding lo-fi synth-like sounds as well. In terms of the sound design possibilities it's way ahead of the others, especially since you can import your own samples.

Thank you! I’m definitely gonna get it but I might have to wait for another sale on it. Excited for it though!

StreetlyTron Pro is my favorite. The Streetly tapes are the real deal, the samples are beautiful.

I also have M-Tron Pro for my laptop with all the expansion packs including the nine Streetly sample packs. The M-Tron Streetly samples are identical to the samples in the StreetlyTron app, but only after they've been tuned to pitch (easily done in the M-Tron software).

M-Tron has all the Chamberlin, Optigan, and Orchestron samples as well, which is nice. There are two layers, each with ADSR for amp and low, high, or band pass resonant filters, half speed, reverse, start point adjust, volume, pan, tuning, lfo to pitch, velocity to amp and filter, global delay and ensemble, and an interesting brake (tape stop) feature.

StreetlyTron Pro has a great selection of Mellotron and Chamberlin samples, two layers, master tune, detune, half speed, the ability to loop any samples, eq, four different temperaments, velocity sensitivity, and a nice reverb.

I think the M-Tron + expansion packs cost me over $200 and that was during a big sale. The StreetlyTron Pro app cost me $14. I like it a lot.

Does it seem pretty stable so far? I have a couple of their other apps and love them

IMHO it’s the most authentic experience on iOS. I wish it was AUv3 but that’s not a db for me.

Thanks! I have the lite version, haven’t tried the XL yet. I’m thinking I might stick with what I have now and save up for Sampletron.

I’ve currently got iOptigan, Chamberlin, Mellotron Lite, and Mellowsound. Plus the mellotron presets in PSP and Thumbjam. Hopefully that should sustain me for a few months until it’s on sale again.

  • +1 for Streetlytron, I sample into BM3, unload the plug in and save the midi just in case I want to change something and resample. It’s a good enough workaround for lack of AUv3 and you can’t beat the price for the quality.

Maxell Metal... but apparently some people like Tape hiss. It's as baffling as the affection for 8-bit audio.

$5 for a 90 minute tape. And now for $90 we get Steel Guitar Pro. Good times.

I'm guessing you are asking about m-tron pro? It is mostly stable on my older macbook air using logic. Every once in a while it refuses to change presets and I have to reload. It always passes au validation, no crashes or messed up song files or anything, just an occasional refusal to choose another preset.

Thanks! Very tempted by this. Really want Sampletron but maybe this will hold me over until it goes on sale again.

  • @wim This one looks pretty sick too…I might just build one. 🤓

  • Took the plunge on Sampletron. Don’t regret it one bit, it’s lovely.

I will say, Mellowsound has a different character so I can see myself using both. For my money, they're the top 2 on iOS.

So now I need to find £79. Mellotron has become a key aspect of my process this week, and I've been having to use the one in Analog Lab V on my laptop. I'd love to have it on my iPad too. This sounds like the real deal.

  • Sampletron, here. Picked it up for under 40Euros, so good deals can be had.

  • So after a year of using different mellotron apps, I've given up on G-Force M-Tron Pro and I've sampled the Streetlytron Pro iOS app sounds to use with the Logic sampler on my laptop. The samples in Streetlytron Pro are the best I've heard.

The biggest issue I have with M-Tron is that almost all patches are at least 10 cents flat. It's strangely consistent. It may be authentic, but it doesn't sound great to me. The Streetlytron app, although they are the source of many of the M-Tron samples, is in tune. Also, the M-Tron samples sound thinner and kind of scratchy, for lack of a better description, and need eq to sound full.

I wish very much that there was a Streetlytron Pro app for laptop/desktop. But until then I have my favorite sounds sampled for Logic and I'm satisfied with that.
