The biggest issue I have with M-Tron is that almost all patches are at least 10 cents flat. It's strangely consistent. It may be authentic, but it doesn't sound great to me.

Wow, really!? What a buzz-kill. That was always an instrument I wanted to own, but I'm far too sensitive to tuning issues to be able to tolerate that :( I wonder why this hasn't been caught and dealt with?

I guess it must be authentically out of tune. It is fixable per patch, though, it's not a huge deal. But every time I wanted mellotron strings in a song I tried M-Tron, then Streetlytron Pro and chose Streetlytron.
M-Tron still has a lot going for it, there are so many patches. Soooooo many patches. It took me ages to go through them. I don't want to put you off the M-Tron software, it's strictly personal preference.

    Really?
I just use a mellotron app.
    Way more convenient.

This was the answer I was hoping to see 😄

  • SoundFonts but there are better options.

  • Just had a quick skim through this, and so far nobody’s mentioned ThumbJam (unless I missed it).

Won’t be as extensive as dedicated Mellotron recreations, but cheap and fun to play using the touch screen.

Sometimes perfect tuning is not the optimal sound. I know they put a huge amount of effort into sampling original sounds, so I’d be surprised if this is an error.

I have M-Tron Pro, and think it’s a good compromise between authentic and modern.

That is probably true. I know mellotrons aren't anywhere near perfectly tuned but some of the M-Tron patches are pretty sour. Comparing the very same Streetly samples used in Streetlytron Pro and in M-Tron, many of the M-Tron samples are flat.

But there are a ton of sounds in M-Tron, including Optigan loops, and a much smaller selection of sounds in Streetlytron Pro.

  • I’ve had Sampletron for a while now and it’s definitely still my favorite for Mellotron apps. Though the Fingerlabs app and the actual Mellotron app from the company itself are very good. Lo-Fi tape is a good and cheap alternative as well. Have tried Streetlytron but I know it gets some praise.

Someone else mentioned Thumbjam and it’s definitely serviceable as well. And the IAP within Module Pro is pretty good.

  • SampleTron 2 is lacking some key woodwinds like the oboe. It also crashes now and then on my 2022 iPad Pro. For apps, I like Mellowsound from Fingerlab. There’s a limited sound set (no brass, for example), but they sampled the Mellotron they had with all its interesting idiosyncrasies.

I did a recent video comparing the sounds of the modern Mellotron with SampleTron 2 and Mellowsound:

I’m only a few minutes into the video but, you seem very thorough in your testing. I like that 👍

Very excited to watch this. I haven’t had any crashes but I haven’t used it that much over the last couple months. I’ll have to put it to the test and see how it goes.

I do agree about Mellowsound. If I want a quick, no fuss mellotron sound, it’s the one I turn to. And with the latest update, you can save presets which was a huge oversight before, imo.

This software's been available for so long and this is the first time i've heard anyone mention the tuning.

Authentic? Maybe. but if I had an original instrument that was that consistently flat, i wouldn't be able to use it ;)
