I do however understand the audio bus situation rubbing you the wrong way
Abu Dhabi allows you to import a sample, chop it up across pads and trigger the samples either via pads or the timeline so has some iMPC Pro style functionality (it also has a rather nice arpeggiator) iMPC Pro is dedicated to this process so it has more features and sample editing and playing capabilities than the Korg Gadget, but I don't think it does everything better, and I don't think the interface is as user friendly.
For example when using the Timeline with Gadget you have your sampler and pads on screen as well, in the iMPC Pro you don't, and with Gadget you can switch between different instruments, you can have multiple instances of the sampler running, and quick access to effects and instrument settings - all while you're editing the timeline.
It depends what you want it to do. With Gadget I take more care to prepare my samples in Soundforge so they can be chopped easily and don't need any additional editing. The Gadget timeline is a joy to use, so dropping and arranging samples along with beats and synths is a quick, and pleasurable process.
I'd rather use an app that has a smooth workflow and no glitches, than one with whistles and bells but an awkward interface, as it gets in the way of the creative process.
As well as the clunkiness of its IAA implementation, and the fact I can't use my effects, I find my apps don't run as efficiently using IAA than they do with AB. I end up in glitch city with IAA, yet running the same apps via AB everything's fine and dandy.
I hear you and I see it this way.
you can trigger the samples from the pads while in the timeline view of the impc, the trigger pads are on the left side of the screen from top to bottom, and you can record just like using the pads in the other view… plus the impc has the smoothest quickest workflow of any timeline in ios , in no other timeline can you move around like that, try to do what jp did with that break in any other timeline , you can but not that fast.
of course you can have multiple instances of instruments running in the impc as well and it's quick access to the instruments through pad/track/modes or by hitting the track arrows. as well as quick and easy track and pad muting and recording of those mutes.
and I don't know if you've tried it but my favorite feature is the individual mixer and fx settings on a per sequence basis, nothing else does this that I know of and it gives you quick and smooth access to completely different mixer and fx settings as well as automation so sequence 1s settings can be different than sequence 2's settings (including automation) so making variations and sculpting a different sound for different parts of your song is a breeeeeeeeeze….. then on top of that add tempo automation per sequence and it's a wrap!
I definitely sympathize with you on the audio glitching though cause your on an iPad 2 and I'm on an iPad 3 which just won't take what I want to give it, but when I tone it down
i don't have the glitching issues you speak of, all of my glitching comes from over taxing.
primarily with running the impc through cs spectral….
it's good to discuss these things cause I learn allot and I'm sure others will too. like not many people know about triggering the samples from the timeline view.
question though, if the iaa implementation in the impc is clunky then what's not clunky.
when I use iaa it just loads up like one of the impc's regular fx, the knobs become available and you can automate it and everything else just like the other fx in the app, at least that's my experience… so it's not different than the way the other fx work in the impc in this regard, and the way you can tap on knobs and get the big fine tune controls and stuff I'm just not aware of a more thoughtful workflow, i wish all apps use gestures to make the workflow that intimate and smooth?

Maybe for dedicated users it's the definitive way to work, but personally I find it a bit of a muddle and prefer using other apps. It has plenty of fans so horses for courses I guess.

Audiobus.
There are a few things when recording with iMPC Pro via IAA that I find irritating, but the most annoying is that it starts playing the iMPC song when I hit the button to record into Garageband. I was hoping to be able to trigger samples via the pads and record these live into GB, but every time I try it starts playing the iMPC sequence. Clunky.
My iPad struggles when using IAA (and processing imported samples). Audiobus reinvented the way I use my iPad and I'm very grateful to the devs for providing a better option to IAA. I'm disappointed that the developers of iMPC Pro (for whatever reason, political or financial) aren't listening to their customers and providing AB support as well.
We can go backwards and forwards as to why you love it and I don't, but I'm convinced there is a lot of room for improvement. If it gets AB support and a bit of a polish then I'll give it another go, but after reading comments about their lack of interest in the product, it doesn't fill me with much hope and I fear there won't be much updating apart from rolling out the odd iOS compatibility fix. In fact I'd put money on them bringing out a separate iMPC Pro2 instead.

Lol. Thank you for making me chuckle.

thanks for me too lol, you know he's right though.
anyways yeah I just have to separate the apps from the developer when it comes to my music, sure they made the impc pro, but it's just something they developed, for me it's a serious instrument that I wish they would take more seriously!
like i said, discussion is good, i don't think enough people are talking about this app cause if they did Retronyms would listen more, so hopefully anyone reading this will go right over to their fb page and let them know how you feel.
just be glad I don't own imashine or else we'd be here all day talking about that sorry excuse for a beatmachine.
@monzo
I get a lot of where you are coming from. A workaround you may wish to try to get over the sync start via IAA is to have a blank sequence / blank time line. iMPC Pro will still sync start, but not generate any audio. You can then trigger samples from the pads to record into a DAW as you like.
I do something similar, but via MIDI. iMPC Pro has the lowest latency I have found when working with Cubasis. I tend to build a kit across a single bank of 16 pads and connect to Cubasis using IAA on an audio track and then create a MIDI track sending out on Virtual MIDI Ch 10. I can then sequence the drum track from Cubasis and record the audio. The timing of the recording is spot on, the most accurate I have been able to achieve.
Still wish we were more clear about which tree we should be barking up: retronyms or akai. Who makes the 'do next' decisions?
I go to both, hit up the reviews too, hell record a song of just you talking about these issues and upload it to the impc truth thingy in the app lol whatever works all hands on deck

Thanks @zen, I'll give it a try with a blank timeline and see how it goes. Haven't got Cubasis, but looking at it as an option for the future.

Definitely. I'm only giving it a bit of a knock because I'm disappointed it's not living up to being a potential essential app for me. The fact that a lot of it's dedicated followers have issues too suggests they need to take the feedback they're getting on board. Maybe they already are.
I had a bit of a go with it last night and started a new track with it. As you say discussion is good, and it's prompted me to see if I can find a workaround for the issues I'm having. If it mucks up my saved track again though it'll be for the chop.
I'm disappointed with that one too, as I have the hardware version. I get the feeling they're not taking the iOS version seriously, but would rather make a bit of extra cash selling IAP sample packs instead.
I have the hardware version as well and all they care about is sample packs, although now they're getting ready to throw some chords features at people and they're acting like it's the second coming of christ or something…. it's a shame when an iPad sequencer can do things that maschines sequencer cannot

We should be barking up the Retronyms tree. They are clearly calling the shots. Akai's technical support is grossly understaffed with trying to provide support to their numerous controllers which have flooded the market. They are overwhelmed with that and have little to no influence/knowledge in the software area. Their canned response to questions/suggestions/problems is "..we'll be sure and pass it along to the developers."

necro bump alert!
I'm running into one of the same issues as the OP
When I reload "Programs" I've created, the samples I've loaded on to pads are not there. When I've saved a Program inside a Project the correct Program loads, but the samples are missing.
Any insight anyone has on this would be greatly appreciated!
