“Desert Island” Part Two: One App Challenge!

Jeff Mills: "I’d advise anyone who makes electronic music to just go into your studio, pick one machine and try to do something with it that you’ve not done before"

Let’s all open our “one” desert island app minus plugins, make a song and post it here!

P.S. I’m working on my track as I type. 😉

  • I'm eyeing Minimic as a new purchase
That may be interesting for this challenge. In 24h i'll start messing with this. (Doing some work and sleep and work again before that)

  • Merde! I'm going to have to dust off either Gadget or Nanostudio 2, aren't I? 🤣

Okay, are Gadget's non-external IAPs allowed? (Because quite frankly, I honestly can't remember which gadgets are the stock ones and which are internal IAPs lol. I know which gadgets are based on external apps, so I'll avoid those.)

  • Let’s go 🤩

  • Desert island app, eh? That means either xynthesizr or bebot — tough call.

  • GR-16

  • Koala Sampler... Challenge accepted!

  • For me the almighty Thumbjam would be the one, it has tons of different instruments, a looper system with separated stems, even an audio to midi converter and one of the most playable iOs keyboards. Swiss army knife at its purest level

  • Jeff Mills knows what he is talking about :)

Not come across Minimic before looks fun. Would love to hear the results if you take on the challenge.

I think playing while squatting awkwardly was the thing he'd never done before.

  • Honestly, this is the most boring shite I've produced since the failed MiRack experiment. 😂 It's so boring, it doesn't deserve its own thread under Creations.

😮‍💨 Production notes in the SoundCloud description. Enjoy? 🤷

With the high prices of vintage gear, you find you can’t afford a decent chair and desk.

It sure was lol. It was rushed I admit. I think I need to give it a second go in Gadget now that I know IAPs are allowable, just not external Gadget-compatible apps like Darwin or Montpellier.

Gadget being my main app, this is how I always create music (though with add-ons iM1, Module, etc). My SoundCloud is filled with Gadget only tracks. Here’s my latest :)

More interviews like this, please! Really interesting stuff. I love reading about the techniques artists use to really master their craft.

Definitely a great idea. I haven’t done this one in particular but I have so many different ways of starting a new track, or experimenting or exercises in creativity if you will, this one will fit in nicely with the others. Like a loose set of vague rules to mix things up when needed. Cheers!

  • Great challenge! I did this for a while with just Gadget and it greatly improved my productivity and made me realize I love romplers more than synths. Definitely gonna jump on this.

  • Other than AUM I do spend quite some time with Baby Scratch. 2000s hip hop vibes :)

  • Nice topic, but as far as Gadget goes, it’s a whole studio, Jeff Miles is talking about picking ONE machine from your studio!
What he does with just the 909 is incredible.

  • Drambo is the obvious choice, but I've found lately that either GR-16 or Korg Electribe Wave really offer amazing potential by themselves
