[Solved?] Are there any iPad models that don't suffer from unresponsive screens when plugged in?
My iPad Air 3 works great as a standalone music-making device. However, when plugged in by a charger or lightning camera kit, the touch screen becomes unresponsive every few minutes. It may not be a huge hindrance, but if there is no fix, which model should I replace it with? I have been having it for over a year, and I find the headphone jack to be very convenient.
Edit: Using the official USB charging outlet and plug kind of reduced the frequency of the freeze but did not actually solve it. However, in addition to using the official outlet for the USB powered hub, I found that the freezing no longer happened (at least not frequently) after taking the iPad out of its case.

Huh, that’s odd. Can’t say I’ve ever experienced anything like this. I’m on an iPad 6 (2018) iOS 15.5.
It could be something in device settings, you can poke around there… you can even calibrate touch sensitivity and a bunch of other stuff.
Are you on the newest iOS version 15.5?
Well September is right around the corner and new models will be out, plus previous models will be discounted. I’m holding out for an iPhone until September to either get a new model, or a discount on a 13 Pro.
I like headphone Jack as well but the adapters don’t seem to inconvenient.
If you go to apples site you can line up and compare any two models side by side, with all the specs, features, etc… listed.
I’ve had that happen before when using a charger that isn’t grounded. Switching to a different power supply fixed the problem for me.
Not had that issue on any of my iPads.
Me neither, yah that sounds like a rare defect.
My old Air2 did that . Sluggish screen response to touch, only when plugged in, and I’m sure it was only with certain cables (all were official Apple cables, and Apple plugs, but only some worked properly)
My Air 3 screen froze constantly when plugged into power of any kind, any cable. The new Air 5 has never done it, is totally rock-solid. The Apple headphone jack to USB C adaptor works flawlessly.

I’ve only ever heard of this problem with the Air 3 and mine does it too. Although I haven’t noticed it happen in a while — which version OS are you running? I’m on the most recent so maybe an update would help you out.
Yes I am using the latest OS version.
I used to have an Air 2, and I never experienced that.
iPhone charger? What's the difference? Maybe I should try charging with an official cable instead of a quality third party one?
15.5.0. Also, the settings page says that repair services are available.
iPhone charger has lower maximum current. Also, likely different technology. The Apple chargers are pretty complex gadgets; not just a transformer and a rectifier.
So if I restart my iPad and recharge with an official iPhone charger, things should be fine?
Is this what I need? https://www.staples.com/Apple-Lightning-to-USB-Cable-1-0-m/product_164116?cid=PS:GS:SBD:PLA:Trans&gclid=CjwKCAjwoMSWBhAdEiwAVJ2ndvBr5-V_iJ6rS3npBaJnpIW5CpYV3GvBea9K8zDGjGh_xGhHxQWxaRoC3vMQAvD_BwE
This is almost certainly due to electrical noise from the charger creeping into your iPad and messing with the extremely sensitive electronics in the touch screen. Only use original Apple stuff. There might also be a lot of noise coming out of your wall outlet itself, which the filtering circuitry in the charger might not be able to fully filter out, causing issues. You could also try a different outlet (on a different electrical circuit) to see if the problem goes away.
Makes no difference, I always use all Apple cables/connectors/dongles etc., still froze contantly. Battery packs, wall power, no difference. And didn't matter where it connected to power, home, out, anywhere.
We’ve got three different models of iPad in our house and have never had an issue like you describe. Sounds like potentially a bad cable or a bad iPad .
So maybe I should sell my iPad on eBay while getting a new one?
First, I’d investigate whether cable or charger is bad. I had a friend whose charger was the root of a lot of bizarre behavior.
Never experienced that on any of the various models I have had over the years
I had a similar problem once when I was using a USB plug on a power board as my charging source. It did weird things when I had the cable plugged in and was super sensitive around the screen near the plug. I'm pretty sure it stuffed my battery up as it hasn't really been very good since. I only ever have it plugged into a proper charger now and have never seen that happen again.
On my ipp11 m1 all is good. So there cant be a problem with noise coming out from the wall. On my ipp 10,5 there was every time a lag on the screen didn't matter where it connected. I try‘d a lot of different places. Then i changed the cabel and charger to a different company then apple and it was a little bit better but it come from time to time. Now my old ipp 10,5 is a soundmodule for my band mate and ipadmini1 for bluetooth midi controll, that has the best battery life and the screen is top for this age.
I have this issue with a 10.2 iPad Pro, but for me it seems to be more related to temperature issues in combination with charging which then has an effect on specific parts in the touch digitizer. It‘s mainly when the iPad gets warm during charging. When it‘s charged, not warm anymore and still plugged in, I have almost no touch issues…
I used to get that with a amazon brand lightning cable. It a grounding issue. Touch the metal part of the camera at the back of the iPad and the problem will disappear for a short time.
Metal part of the camera? Wydm? Sounds like voodoo to me.
I'll try the five finger solution, thanks.
My iPad Air 3 often has an unresponsive touch screen. It is worse when charging (I'm using the official Apple charger). It also seems worse when using either the built in touch keyboard or a sketch program I sometimes try to use. Some days it happens every few minutes. I have gotten fast at turning the screen off and on as that solves the problem temporarily. It keeps me from using my iPad for much, but I'm still very happy to have one because of Streetlytron Pro and Spacecraft!
