"device requires too much power" - help please
I love Musikraken so much and it's freed me up to do some live performing the way I always hoped I would be able to, but I'm running into a snag. All works fine when I hook up my iPad through my iConnectMIDI2+ MIDI interface (and then to Bitwig), but it doesn't work on my iPhone which is what I need to use live. I get the error:
"Cannot use accessory Iconnectmidi2+: this requires too much power"
And trying the Core MIDI Network is a little laggy and requires WiFi
I contacted IConnectivity about the issue and they recommended getting a power adapter for the interface and not just relying on USB power. Which I did, but this didn't work either. I get the same error.
They also recommended getting an Apple's USB3 Camera Connection Kit to connect to the interface but before I fork out $50, I thought I'd ask if any of you have had the same situation and how you solved it. Hard to imagine how the CCK will supply more power to the connection.
Any tips greatly appreciated!
Greg

If you use the Apple CCK with Lightning power connector, you can connect a charger while using the USB device. That allows it to supply more power than the phone will allow from its battery. An iPad charger (12 W, 2.4 A) would probably help.
What does this have to do with the Musikraken app? Sounds like it's just a typical USB power problem.
O yeh, you are right. Maybe I should retitle it. Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware that's how it worked. Much appreciated!
I use this $14.99 USB camera connection kit for my new keyboard, so it might work for you: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09W484SQY?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details
Which of these will work best I wonder:

For any adaptors like the cck, always go with Apple official products. Less hassle, less things will go wrong.
Thanks, that has been my experience too. Wish they weren't 4X as expensive!
I have an official Apple CCK3 and used it for years but since I always also need to use a USB hub I thought I would try out this this one from Amazon since it connects 3 USB devices directly. I bought it a month ago and use it daily and have had no issues in iOS 15.3 so I no longer need to use a USB hub in my setup.
Am back in the same boat. I have the Apple Camera Connection Kit with 2 ports and a usb hub. The CC is less than 6 months old and I got that same error message. Got in touch with the company I bought the hub from and after a bit of wrangling they sent me a new hub. Hub less than 2 moths old same error message. Arrrrgh!
Thanks a lot!
You likely need a powered hub to run any significant USB devices. I was able to run 2 keyboards with a passive hub, but a new controller and DAC put an end to that.
What power source are you using to feed the CCK (usb adapter). Apple’s charger isn’t sufficient for some USB devices. So depending on your USN device’s draw you might need a more powerful charger to feed the CCK.
I don't have a CCK. Just a USB to lightning adapter. My iPad Pro works fine, and my iPhone X doesn't. I just powering the iConnectMIDI2+ with USB from my iMac.
I have a couple Anker powered hubs and tried those as well with no luck.
Thank you! I think I'll give this a shot.
By cck, I mean the usb to lightning adapter. Are you using the version with a poweport (lightning and usb inputs) or just usb input?
just usb
That is probably the problem. Those adapters have a more limited power draw. The preferred version has usb and lightning inputs. The lightning is solely for powe.
I see, thanks! I'm going to try to get one of those but its a USB to lightning adapter that has a USB-C port for charging (I guess)
Sorry, if it had port for charging that should be fine as long as you are supplying enough power to the charging port.
Seems like this one should work then and with less hassle:

Maybe, my experience with non-Apple adapters is mixed. Some work well. Some don’t. Some work well for a while and then die.
Interesting. I'd be a bit wary of this, since the description never mentions the word "Lightning", and the connector image does not show the detail of the connector. They seem to be focused on all the neato things you can do with it, not on the actual specs. Why not consider one of the MFI options shown on the same Amazon page? Then you at least know the connector is legal (it has a chip inside). Just get one with the USB and Lightning ports.
good advice I think!
I would connect my iPhone to my Mac through bluetooth for sending midi only. If audio also has to go to the mac then I would use the standard usb cable to a hub connected to my Mac. You can set both methods up in the audio/midi settings application on the mac.
That's because Apple hates consumers and intentionally breaks third party adapters in new updates because the apple adapters have a little 'fuck you' chip that non apple adapters don't have, that does nothing but tell your ipad if it should work or not. Apple is a bitch ass mother fucker.
The trick is to use a USB powered hub. With this you can use a standard camera connection kit.
Thanks, is the second method what they call IDAM?
Is this true about the chip literally? Is frustrating and has always been. I have a large box of 3rd party adapters and Apple adapters that either don't work or don't work with current devices.
I tried this and for me it didn't work. I was using a Anker powered hub and the apple USB to lightning connector with my iConnectMIDI2+ and still getting that error. I'm assuming I need the USB3 Camera Connection Kit which has a charging port in it. So I'll have to use a USB-C charger and plug that in while I'm using my iPhone.
Why do you keep mentioning "USB-C charger"? The Apple USB-3 Camera Adapter (and its clones) connects to the iPad/iPhone via Lightning, and includes a Lightning power (only) port alongside the USB port. There's no USB-C involved. If your iPhone has a USB-C port, that's a whole other set of problems.
I don't understand why your test with the powered USB hub did not work. Provided the hub's power brick was connected to power, it should not draw any current from the iPhone adapter. But these hookups generally work best if the iPhone/iPad connection is the last one made, with everything else, including the adapter, already connected.
