I love Musikraken so much and it's freed me up to do some live performing the way I always hoped I would be able to, but I'm running into a snag. All works fine when I hook up my iPad through my iConnectMIDI2+ MIDI interface (and then to Bitwig), but it doesn't work on my iPhone which is what I need to use live. I get the error:

"Cannot use accessory Iconnectmidi2+: this requires too much power"

And trying the Core MIDI Network is a little laggy and requires WiFi

I contacted IConnectivity about the issue and they recommended getting a power adapter for the interface and not just relying on USB power. Which I did, but this didn't work either. I get the same error.

They also recommended getting an Apple's USB3 Camera Connection Kit to connect to the interface but before I fork out $50, I thought I'd ask if any of you have had the same situation and how you solved it. Hard to imagine how the CCK will supply more power to the connection.

    Any tips greatly appreciated!

The trick is to use a USB powered hub. With this you can use a standard camera connection kit.

I tried this and for me it didn't work. I was using a Anker powered hub and the apple USB to lightning connector with my iConnectMIDI2+ and still getting that error. I'm assuming I need the USB3 Camera Connection Kit which has a charging port in it. So I'll have to use a USB-C charger and plug that in while I'm using my iPhone.

Why do you keep mentioning "USB-C charger"? The Apple USB-3 Camera Adapter (and its clones) connects to the iPad/iPhone via Lightning, and includes a Lightning power (only) port alongside the USB port. There's no USB-C involved. If your iPhone has a USB-C port, that's a whole other set of problems.

I don't understand why your test with the powered USB hub did not work. Provided the hub's power brick was connected to power, it should not draw any current from the iPhone adapter. But these hookups generally work best if the iPhone/iPad connection is the last one made, with everything else, including the adapter, already connected.

Crap, you are right. I ordered the wrong adapter. Here is the one I ordered:

My power strip is connected to a power supply and the iPhone was the last connection made. I thought it should work too.

That adapter has Lightning connectors on both ends, as well as a USB-A port. It's correct for a Lightning phone. I notice that the description says "Connector: USB type C, USB 3.0", but none of the connectors pictured is USB-C; seems like a description error.

Edit: Your iPhone X uses Lightning, so you should be all set.

o great! Thanks. I hope so. Yeh, the USB-C description is confusing. Looking at the adapter, the charging port looks like USB-C, but they don't specifically say.

  • Surprised no one has suggested it but sometimes the trick is to use a cheap UNpowered hub in the middle of the connection. I have certain controllers that will not work connected directly but will if I stick the hub in the middle which is weird but works.

IDAM is great though if you’re using a Mac and you don’t need any of the advanced functions of the iConnect.

  • Not sure if mentioned too much to read, lol.

A powered usb hub. One that plugs into an outlet.

Interesting. I had no idea about this possibility. I'll give it a try when I can.

I just tried it again and it just doesn't work for me here. Maybe my hub is defective, though everything else seems to work fine.

  • reporting back on this. The item linked below works great and has solved my power issue. It's weird cause I didn't even have to plug into the charging port for it to work!

Don’t cry victory yet!! I’m glad that you’ve sorted out your problem but I’d test this set up thoroughly before venturing out with it. At times one extra led on the controller will tip the scales and you’ll need to re plug everything.

I’d also say, as others have mentioned, to be weary of Apple iOS updates. If the dongle isn’t made by Apple there is a good chance it will stop working.

I used to have a bucketful of cheap adapters until I realised all of my power problems lied in them, as well as cheap usb cables.

That was about 6 years ago and since I bought the official ones I never had to buy adapters again….

…until I bought an iPad Pro with usb c port 😂

o wow! I appreciate the warning. The adapter I got said it was Apple certified (whatever that might mean). I'll take heed!
