Vintage phone emulation?

Is there an app that can make a vocal sound like it’s going through a vintage phone? Like an emulator?

This sorta thing…

  • Without going through my own plug-in collection I would say anything that’s a filter plug-in should be able to emulate this effect

  • Just eq out everything below 400 Hz and above 3 kHz. Maybe add Time Machine or DAW LP for some crackling.

if you have an IR app like THAFKNAR, there are some IRs out there that do this. I don't have a URL handy but I recall that they were easy to find when needed them a few years back.

  • What a beautiful song.

For the effect, I would use an EQ followed by a distortion plugin like Saturn. For the EQ, you can either use a bandpass filter or use a lowpass and highpass filter combination as @Philandering_Bastard suggested.

Then add a little subtle saturation with a distortion plugin. I suggest if you use Saturn, use the "warm tape" saturation mode. Don't overdo the saturation. Subtle is best.

    Awesome

  • Interesting subject!
Anyone knows if she's using a really old one with a carbon microphone?

If anyone would like to build it with Drambo, here's the info needed:
    http://recherche.ircam.fr/pub/dafx11/Papers/54_e.pdf

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

I figured I could spin my own easily enough, just hoped there might be something that does this outta the box. There’s probably lots of nuances to the sound just like tape emulation.

    Will have a mess around.

Thanks for digging this out. I’ve downloaded the speakers and telephones one, but can’t open the .sit file, even with the stuff it iOS app. Why can’t people just use zip! 😂

Anyone who didn’t know that was a cover seriously needs to listen to the whole Radiohead back catalogue today! 😂

It sounded like our good friend @jwmmakerofmusic didn't recognise it, hence the public service announcement. 😉

There's a setting for this in GarageBand on iOS. Just create a new audio track (as opposed to a MIDI instrument track) and add the following effect:

  • CHOWTapeModel has an Old Telephone preset..

Pretty, although I think she overdid the breathiness.

When I think vintage telephone ☎️ effect, I think of ELOs Telephone Line. I wonder how you’d emulate that sound?

    You mean the ringing sound?

  • I always download these Drambo FX patches and still can’t get the installation right to hear the result. I wish Drambo creatives would supply instructions or a complete example rack.

Of course it’s really my problem for trying but NOT doing the work to master the process to build things with it. It’s like those that avoid Mosaic because code is often a nightmare.

  • I remember reading once that a comb filter is a good way to get that sound. Don’t really know what’s out there along those lines, maybe Apefilter?

Load Drambo as an effect plugin, load the rack and connect its input to the track's signal input on the left of the track.
But you're right, I should return to my old strategy to upload full projects - it means less mind bending for sure.

Load Drambo as an effect plugin

I started Drambo as a DAW. Is there a path from there that would demonstrate your
Preset/Patch/Rack? After starting Drambo I could hear audio in my headphones.
Once I added your rack I couldn't get the audio to pass through it and demonstrate the
    "mic effect".

load the rack and connect its input to the track's signal input on the left of the track.

OK. I could hear audio and then couldn't after loading in the rack and I had the "sine wave" widgets connected. Perhaps improperly but this is an exercise I have experienced many times with Drambo. Not really a big deal because I have more fun in AUM with my approach.
I'm not a sequence guy so a groove box app doesn't inspire me to get busy.

But you're right, I should return to my old strategy to upload full projects - it means less mind bending for sure.

I guess that's my ask... I'd like to have a Drambo experience that helps me appreciate it for what it can do. @echoopera posted a complete AUM rig that included Drambo and I had something to tweak and learn from that sounded magical.

The process of building from scratch requires me to listen to hours of truly awful audio hoping I can find something I might like. It's happened a couple times after some serious effort.

This is more of a treatise on how I relate to some apps on IOS and not a fair or useful criticism of apps that serve the needs of so many.

So far I have had similar less than productive experiences learning Loopy Pro but @Michael has asked for input on how he can help more on board with changes or other
useful materials. I can imagine that I'd love Loopy Pro because the concept of layered live performances just resonates with me based on looping hardware I have purchased.
A template with a specific pedal board (I have a Blue Board) config would save me a lot of
learning curve ("Running Up That Hill") grief.

I have a similar rant I could upchuck on Cubasis 2 and 3 which just throws bugs at me faster than I can swat them and the fact that MIDI routing just doesn't follow AUM's ease of use so
    I give up.

ApeMatrix? Close but against AUM? Never mind.

    Zenbeats? AEMS?

I wish GarageBand had a more open policy for those external apps I use to generate MIDI events. I know when I'm being "handled" and it tends to make me revolt. Apply this resistance to Gadget too.

I guess if I really wanted to get work done I'd buy an M1 Mac with a lot of RAM and storage
and find a new place to hang. This is still the best place to hang because even the worst creative is treated with respect and encouraged to suck less next time but in the most gentle language. You just don't find places like this in general.

Now... tell me to fuck off for being so resistant to doing the work required master these tools.

Did I mention I love writing music with a pencil and having it rendered... but it's only good for
orchestral genres in general but the recent update added audio tracks so I could import my AUM creations. But you do have to write notation and only with an Apple Pencil.

    Slow news day.

This whole rant reminds me of a bad coder complaining about all the cool
programming languages for being hard to build with. I guess I want to keep making really cool hacks with Perl, PHP or Python. Perl because of the existing Modules that handle all the really hard shit. If the Drambo stuff on
PatchStorage was as useful to manage all the hard stuff so I could just make
great music I'd be a pig in shit.

@McD Yes, the "sine wave widgets" are the signal connectors and the rack's input and output want to be connected like in any modular system.
In Drambo, you connect from right to left: Tap in the input (leftmost in the rack) and choose the output signal to connect to. It must always be on the left or above the input as signals strictly go left => right and top => down in Drambo.
Then tap the output (e.g. the track's rightmost signal port) and choose my effect rack's output to insert that "cable" too.

Please take your time to practice working your way through, it does pay off in the end 😊

No, I meant his voice on the phone. Sounds the most accurate emulation to me versus the girl doing the Radiohead cover sounds too exaggerated
