GAS List CLOSED
I am just making a public declaration that I have closed my wish/GAS list. I’m not wishing for new stuff. It doesn’t mean I won’t buy stuff, but I will no longer spend time searching and compiling wants and instead focus on deeply learning the stuff I got. I feel like a weight has been lifted 😆
Comments
You will run out of GAS and need to refill.
I got to that point few months ago!
It’s nice ! Welcome
Lmao
Thank you, happy to be here!
My GAS list is pretty much closed too. There are certain developers whose apps and IAPs I will instabuy (ToneBoosters, Bleass, FAC, BramBos, Korg, etc), but the last new app that was on my GAS list was Crystalline.
Crystalline is definitely worth it!
It definitely is!
Others - "The perfect Ambient reverb doesn't exist."
Baby Audio - "Hold my coffee!"
Very lovely, but here I am to offer support (or peer through the bars and wonder what such a life might be like) and then poof there's another 30 bucks at risk. And for a reverb....
I had Mexican food earlier, so any statement I make about not having GAS is going to be untrue.
🤣🤣🤣💀
Beans, beans, the musical fruit
The more you eat, the more you toot
🤣
Trying to do same ! It's not easy, wishing to both of us we succeed in long term ! My big success is i still didn't buy Syntakt, will try continue to resist, you inspired me !
Beans beans they’re good for your heart ❤️
The more you eat the more you f***
The more you f***, the better you feel
So lets have beans for every meal.

I didn't read the whole PDF yet. But IMHO it is a serious condition
Wow, thank you for sharing this!
Gear Acquisition Syndrome, also known as GAS, is commonly understood as the musicians’ unrelenting urge to buy and own instruments and equipment as an anticipated catalyst of creative energy and bringer of happiness. For many musicians, it involves the unavoidable compulsion to spend money one does not have on gear perhaps not even needed. The urge is directed by the belief that acquiring another instrument will make one a better player.
This book pioneers research into the complex phenomenon named GAS from a variety of disciplines, including popular music studies and music technology, cultural and leisure studies, consumption research, sociology, psychology and psychiatry. The newly created theoretical framework and empirical studies of online communities and offline music stores allow the study to consider musical, social and personal motives, which influence the way musicians think about and deal with equipment. As is shown, GAS encompasses a variety of practices and psychological processes. In an often life-long endeavour, upgrading the rig is accompanied by musical learning processes in popular music.
But there is also completely different point of view on this whole topic.. as soon as you have enough money/income, and buying new HW (SW) makes you hapy and you enjoy exploring new gear, there is basically nothing wrong on it .. it is not mandatory you have to make "some" music with it ... it's all just toys for many of us, simply way how to spend free time and enjoy it.
Also collecting gear is hobby
Here:

Pardon me for being so rude,
It was not me it was my food.
It felt so lonely down below
It just popped out to say “Hello!”
I totally understand the hobby/collector aspect.
For me, I have limited space and money but if I had bunches of money I would definitely be scouring the internet to locate all my dream synths!
They aren’t necessary for me to make music I love but they would be fun to have and tinker with 😍
I also had a “GAS” problem with leadership books and exercise gear: the latest and greatest idea or widget lights my fire 😂 I have been able to relieve myself of both “tummy aches” 🤣 due to my lack of space and realization that I actually need to use what I have.
Gas is such a distraction from making music and constantly searching for that thing to make your music better.
I’ve spent close to a year putting together my eurorack synth system and now it’s finished, sounds great and is real fun to play I’m thinking of selling it. Not to get something else but because I’m already thinking of how I can better each module I have. It’s complete but gas has me thinking it could be improved.
Thinking of selling it so I’m not constantly swapping modules. Far too addictive
For me after having owned too much gear, (a pretty simplistic) way of thinking is, do I want to be a musician, who can play an instrument, or do I want to be some kind of studio technician. I rather be a musician. Some people have a gift and are talent, and some have to work hard, I fall into the second category, so I don´t have time to waste with collecting gear.
Collecting gear as a hobby, I think musical instruments are meant to be played, not collected. For me the argument too much time/space/money is not that strong. These are spoiled persons anyway :-)
P43:
„However, it could also be tempting to buy more gear to avoid the effort of getting the most out of the current setup. „
Sadly i am lacking in space, time and money. Really not the right thing for gas. One of the reasons i decided to only buy eurorack was that it meant i have one machine to learn but i just kept tweaking elements within it. Sadly the fact you have thousands of elements available kills that notion and i now realise that was wishful thinking
I feel you. It’s almost like the gear becomes art pieces on display to admire and analyze from a distance 😂
These gadgets and apps are too fun to just gawk at and collect.
Do you feel too limited sound/timbre-wise by your current setup?
This.
We really should take time to learn the stuff people worked so hard to create and we worked so hard to buy.
No, not at all. I have a hybrid setup so when you add vsts and auv3s sound is almost infinite. I got a eurorack for hands on sound design and to create something original fitting my spec but now I’ve created it I am still thinking if I replace this module I can now do this. Endless possibilities are both amazing and distracting
Ah gotcha, I can’t imagine
P82: „ For hobbyists, collecting can be compensation for anything missing, be it professional success, recognition or whatever is lacking in life ”
I'm pretty sure one of these days I'll probably end up with an OP-1 Field. It'll be the only hardware synth I need since it can do everything I'd want it to do within its limitations.
But neither am I in a huge rush to buy it either. So in a way it doesn't count as GAS so much as it counts as a pipe dream. 😅
thanks @Stuntman_mike stimulating thread...
I walk across the street and step into my neighbor's studio, where there are racks of all of my dream hardware and more. Dude produces and hangs out with people you know and artists my wife and I love. F##king nice man too.
His space is my idea of heaven and strangely an antidote to my own hardware lust. Hard to explain, but what it does is inspire me to work harder inside my iOS space. Which is pretty heavenly itself given all the dreamy software available to us. We live as royalty, given access to these virtual tools.
