Just my 2 cents... what I have done is getting two different setups. A small portable amp for playing in the house or garden (Fly3, THR5), and some modelling device for multi track recording. I don't need this functionality in one device. And for the amp I want to install it quickly, if I first need to search for the amp, search full batteries, attach multiple cables, other devices, the little moment I can play, or want to play, is already gone.
With my Zoom R8 multi track I use the Zoom G1fourX, and also a Boss SD pedal, and a Behringer tube model pedal for more convenience (easier to dial in).
If you go this way I would search for a clone pedal of the Strymon Iridium, something with amp simulation and (more important) IR files. Or go for the real deal.
The crux is if you buy multiple lower cost devices you pay the same as one more expensive device... I cannot advise about that.
And, now I think about it, long time a had GAS for the Tech21 Fly rig 2 Richie Kotzen.

But the Zoom G1fourX and the Behringer tube amp model pedal give me the same functionality. Not the sound probably .
Just picked up a second-hand Strymon Iridium. I wouldn’t say it’s better than TH-U, but it’s way less of a pain to use, and sounds great.
No audio interface necessary, straight into my mixer, and as a bonus I can run a stereo headphone cable to the OP-1.
Update. My beautiful girl partner-in-life got me a Vox Air Gt for my birthday!.
I only tried for a couple of hours but I love it!. Sounds really good and the playing sensation of s great. To me it feels like a “real” amp.
It’s probably (as I expected) the subjective feeling of having an actual amp in the room, but I enjoy it a lot more than playing through the studio monitors. Just a better feeling overall.
I tested against a THR (the first model) in the shop and I like the Vox a lot better. It’s fuller, rounder, bigger… I have to say I even like the “lady’s purse” look on the Vox.
The “wide” button on Vox Adio is some vodoo magic, you can actually hear sound coming from beyond the enclosure.
I’m gonna do some tests and see how it translates into recording. The headphone outs seem rather quite but sound nice and clean so they might be ok for recording. I’m glad and relieved that I have my expectations settled beforehand, if it works good for recording, great, but I’m gonna monitor through it and record dry anyway so I can then choose the original amp or use a Nembrini.
It sounds better than I expected. First impression is it sounds better than the Zoom G1on, and for sure seems more responsive to the playing dynamics.
Also tested it as a boom box and it has some beef!. So very happy ☺️
PD: I need to marry my girlfriend!. It feels stupid calling her “girlfriend” after all these years, and “partner” sounds like you got some business setup. Either someone helps me with a proper way to call it or I’m gonna go for “wife”. She’s so nice, as soon I got the Vox going loud she encouraged me to go down to the garage to have some privacy 🤣
Nice one. Careful though, if you marry her and then subsequently divorce you’ll have to give her half the amp
I’ll give her the mod effects section, they’re not that great. Too obvious and present, you can get ok results with the app but I wish they were more configurable from the device.
I’ll fight for the reverbs though, they’re pretty nice. She can also keep the high gain models and Eddie Van Halen crap 🙃
Advice and reminder for iPad music doodlers:
Whatever multi effects, amp or digital gadget you buy, make sure it works with an iOS app!. Bluetooth highly recommended aswell.
The Vox Toneroom app might not be the greatest, but being able to tweak the amp instantly via Bluetooth is so handy and convenient. The Zoom doesn’t have it, my very expensive Helix didn’t have it. If you have to plug in a desktop, usb cable, bla, bla, it just kills the vibe. You switch into “program” mode. With the app you can play and tweak at the same time, it’s effortless.
