How shitty is iCloud - and what to do about it?

I recently discontinued my paid iCloud description. I now find that many books I downloaded just don’t appear in the Books app any more. Even searching for them doesn’t reveal the name or any opportunity to download again. I go to the settings menu iCloud section / manage storage / books. I am confronted by a meager pile of books, not sortable in any way - alphabetical, by date, whatever. The contents of my iCloud are now are mere 5GB and so much stuff is missing. If I upgrade my iCloud account again will these come back? If I discontinue using iCloud again, how to I ensure that my stuff stays on my device, rather than being uploaded to a cloud that keeps making me pay for access?

  • Have you tried turning off sync devices for Books and turning it back on? That screwed up my books once, but I did this and it synced back up.

By this do you mean just turn the slider for books from green to off? Tried that just now, no joy, though maybe it will take a while to have effect?

  • Sorry, only have my phone on me right now, so this is for iPhone and not iPad (which is where I had the problem).

In ‘Settings’ under ‘Books’ there is a ‘Syncing’ section with a slider for ‘iCloud Drive’. I think I set it to off, swiped up Books, set it to on, and reopened Books.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

Thanks - at this point I’m just worried - will I lose all the old books I downloaded? Since my cloud storage is just the free 5GB.

  • Looking on the Apple support pages, Looks like once the storage is gone whatever was stored there is gone too. Which to be honest kinda makes sense.

I have made very very very bad experiences with cloud storage.

At best, get a WebDAV provider or host your own NextCloud and do it yourself.

It's better anyways to NOT give any money to Google, Apple, Microsoft!
    Seriously

Of the three companies you listed, Apple is the only one I trust more to correct their mistakes, if not immediately, eventually.

  • According to Apple, your data should be available for 30 days after you cancel. How long ago did you cancel?

You will have to Download and then use Share to save the data somewhere. You can save to files, air drop, etc.

Before you cancelled, did you check to see how much cloud storage you were using?

For Apple Books, it works like the AppStore: tap on the "photo" icon, you can see all your purchases, and download them again to local storage.

I don’t think we’re talking about books purchased in the Apple Book Store here.

I think we are - the question is about the Books app.

  • OP hasn’t been clear. Books app can store both purchased content and other content. For instance , I store most pdfs in Books.

The thread title seems unnecessarily over the top.

The books app doesn’t back up third party PDFs for you though, as far as I know. I have all my manuals in there which would be a real pain to lose

Frankly I don't even remember cancelling - yet I was surprised to see my limit was back to 5gb. Not really sure how or when it was cancelled, I only noticed a few days ago that it was back to 5gb. Hopefully I can retrieve it. I guess an order came through to my bank card which was at zero a while ago - all my money is in other places. I'll try sparking up a new heavy duty icloud account, but the whole experience is very off-putting. I felt that all the books etc on my main device were actually on it. 😂

Indeed, actually Apple Books isn't even available in China

But if it doesn't back them up why are they gone? I've had to redownload the TC-Data manual 3 times in the past week or so, which5oe a real pain in the arse. Never had these problems when I had an expensive iCloud account

You are incorrect. I use books to share pdfs/manuals across devices.

Yes, if I have the iCloud storage for it. The book store restore purchases wouldn’t get them back, which was what seemed to be suggested. I’ve probably misread something along the way.

I am not sure that it is fair to call iCloud ‘s**tty’ based on this.

I forgot about that. I was just assuming books bought through the app, as that’s the only type I have in the app.

  • I seem to remember them giving you 30 days before things were deleted. If you go ahead and sign back up for the .99 50Gb upgrade they may reappear. Download and cancel after.

The subject line very much read like the old "when did you stop beating your wife" trope. I'm very happy with iCloud, myself. I don't like the way application data is just dumped in the root rather than namespaced for cleanliness, but functionally it's been great. Plus the 99 cent tier is a great bargain.

Yeah you can’t really blame apple if the bank card you’re using to pay for the service doesn’t have any funds anymore.

For a period of time (in the beginning), iCloud really was a terribly conceived service, but it has improved to the point where I can finally recommend it now.

  • Thing is, it doesn't even show me when it expired or what I would get back by going back to a higher tier.

Are you absolutely certain that you did not overlook a message sent to you when your payment failed? Or that it wasn’t diverted to spam?

I just looked through my inbox for it. But I have so many emails tagged 'apple' related to test fight and other things. 'iCloud' also doesn't bear fruit

My main point is that I generally only use one ipad. I always figured the stuff I had on that ipad was actually there, permanently. I know better now.

I don't think you can fairly call iCloud a crappy program for your not understanding how cloud storage works.
