Yeah... for me those can't be considered DAWs in the traditional sense individually.
Xequence is a badass midi sequencer. And with Audiobus, AUM or Apematrix (and dare I say, even Audioshare) you have awesome hosts.
Paired up, they could be considered a DAW.
I said, said... and said nothing useful
Sorry
Would love to see something new come out leftfield in the iOS DAW dept to be honest.
Thanks, @Identor !
Anyone here try both MultiTrackStudio and Zenbeats? Thoughts?
Only if it’s something clever that makes people argue over whether it qualifies as a daw or not.
AUM, Drambo, Loopy Pro.
Isn’t BeatMaker mostly for doing hip pop type of stuff? I have it but never have been able to figure it out
BeatMaker 3 is very much inspired by the MPC. That I no way relegates it to only a particular genre of music.
Any style can be created with it. It’s sampler is also very good.
Yeh, kinda. More like two people in a potato sack race than Siamese twins, but yeh.
What does xequence do??
Does that mean it has to use step recording?
No you can play into it live, like an MPC.
Nah, it's a sampler and can do anything a sampler does its up to the user to load or create the needed samples.
I see BM3 as a 'keyboard sampler' similar to the classic Roland W30 which was used by The Prodigy which is as far away from Trap/Hip-Hop you can get
MultiTrackStudio is my primary iOS DAW but I flit between that and NS2, GarageBand, Gadget, MT DAW and X2/AUM/AB3/Loopy. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and I find enjoyment in using all of them. I am not counting apps like StaffPad or Dorico as DAWs but they get a lot of use too.
For me, the looping was the selling point for Zenbeats but I prefer GarageBand and Loopy now for that aspect. MTS excels in other areas and is a mature DAW with probably the best (in my opinion) piano roll and a great two-way iOS/desktop workflow.
It's just a really, really good timeline based midi sequencer. Like a DAW without the audio part. It only handles midi, which you need to send to other apps in order to make any sound.
interesting that Multitrack DAW (aka harmonic dog) got zero votes. it has probably the slickest audio track editor on ios. with the possible exception of FLSM, slick in the sense of quick work and options in rotary menus
ive used it in conjunction with Genome, and probably would be fun with Xequence. And in a sense is only a complete DAW with those midi sequencers. The opposite of Gadget and NS2 in that they only sequence midi. this is why i default to FLSM, given that it’s slick in both midi and audio tracks editing, and doesn’t necessarily require adjunct apps (sequencers, samplers, instruments) to be a complete workstation
The problem with trying to use Xequence 2 and MultiTrack DAW is MTD doesn't follow Song Position Pointer (SPP). If it did, that would be an outstanding combination.
Not having any built-in midi sequencing is one reason more people don't mention it. Most probably need both, and bolting things together ain't always fun. Also - it only got AUv3 app support relatively recently.
I like MTD for straightforward, no distraction audio tracking. But it's kind of a thing off by itself other than that in my mind.
Ableton for song layout, Cubase for mixing, when on iOS (rarely these days) AUM or Cubasis 3
Maybe it’s because so many folks use more midi stuff
On the very rare occasions I need to use a linear DAW, Multitrack DAW is the one I use.
Started using it to add audio tracks to music made in NS1, and if I’m having problems balancing instruments on the fly while playing, I occasionally record stems in AUM and then mix/tweak in MTDAW.
It’s very rare, because I much prefer recording straight to stereo in AUM, but MTDAW has rescued a couple of things.
I’ve also used it to construct a few very short pieces for group projects with a strict time limit (1 minute plus or minus 2 seconds), which is almost impossible for me to do “live” to stereo. The tolerances are just too tight for that. Mostly, my stuff has barely faded up in the first minute!
Basically Cubase on the AtariST…
Ever since xequence was mentioned I started looking at it and I’m still not understanding what it really even does or if it could benefit me and how
Xequence is a great MIDI sequencer, but it requires a bit more advanced knowledge to hook it up proper to synths in AUM and such.
At this stage in your learning, it's best to stay in a "garden wall" app like Gadget 2. 🙂
Roland Zenbeats is quickly becoming a very capable DAW and is my choice. It has come far from the Stagelight era. The loops function is great for laying down ideas and the ZR1 drum machine/sampler is a hidden gem. With the classic TR-Rec workflow it is a breeze to lay down drum tracks, drum sounds being editable as well. Not being a drummer I find the many drum patterns useful. Proper audio tracks are there working without a glitch. Synthwise, internal Zencore and the iOS world of AUv3s have got at least me covered.
Backed and developed by a major company, I am not worried about support or development stopping for some reasons. While you should never get stuff for what is promised in the future but for what it can do today, the development is rapidly coming along for Zenbeats and the backlog for what is to come is really interesting.
Just my two cents.

Take a look at any DAW that has a piano roll and a timeline for arranging patterns into a song. Now imagine the DAW doesn't host synth apps or make any sound at all. That's Xequence. To make any music, you have to route the MIDI that the piano roll patterns contain out to other apps that can receive it and play it.
Xequence isn't a DAW. It doesn't handle audio of any kind. If you're looking for a DAW then Xequence isn't what you're looking for.
It's meant as companion app to build songs when you're using apps like AUM that don't have any way to play back recorded or sequenced midi on their own. Or to replace the midi sequencers of DAWs when you don't get along well with the DAW's sequencer. Or to sequence hardware.
