This is the beer that surprised me when I bought a bunch of them during the summer:

It tastes very much like a thick rich bitter perhaps from a real ale pub, except there’s no alcohol in it, but you wouldn’t know

    Noted! 👍
The non-alcoholic beers are pretty decent nowadays and you have a good range to choose from. They’ve gotten a lot better, I remember a few years ago they tasted like wet socks 💩. Non alcoholic wine is still crap, tastes like kid’s grape juice.
I got high expectations for Alcosynth. Hope it arrives sooner than Logic for iPad.

I share a similar ex-wife perspective on alcohol. Alcohol literally saved my life on one dark occasion and kept me chugging along during a period of severe mental traumas that I simply could not have coped with otherwise. Years later, even in hindsight, I can still say, straight-faced with no self-delusion, that alcohol made me a better person—more sociable, more productive, more creative, more consistent, more stable, and more ambitious. She was perfect for me at the time, but the divorce had to come. But there’s no hard feelings and we still keep in touch.

    Great explanation. Touché 🙌🥹

  • I try to follow the « 1 glass per day max » rule. It means that if I open a bottle on saturdays and sundays (and share it with my wife, meaning 3 glasses per bottle for me), I can have one glass of whisky during the week…

Note: This reply got longer than I anticipated, but I'm in a "philosophical" mood right now while waiting for my ruddy Beats to charge, lol. (I didn't charge them in 4-5 days, so they were at 20% battery life). 😳

    ALCOHOL

Now not to veer too far off-topic, but for folks who think beer tastes gross, there are many types of beer. I'm definitely not one for a porter or a stout as I find the taste super bitter and the body too thick. If you like porters and stouts however, more power to ya. I like Ambers (Fat Tire), Wheat Ales (Blue Moon), Mexican beer (Modelo, not Corona 😂), Japanese beer (Sapporo), affordable beer like Rolling Rock and Miller Genuine Draft, and if I'm feeling rather adventurous, maybe an IPA (although some IPA's taste really bitter, while some others taste smooth and amazing).

Ok, I will grant two exceptions to beers: 1) Mexican (Pacífico or Bohemia, and with all due respect Corona is better than Modelo, yeah that’s right) 2) a single pint of a good, maybe a bit chocolatey Scotch ale in lieu of dessert after a good meal. More than 1 is overkill though.

I will agree with more than one being overkill, but bruh. I'll fight you in the comments for saying Corona is better than Modelo. 🤣 (Joking! We all have unique palettes in what we like to consume or not.)

I've never tried chocolatey Scotch ale before. Have any recommendations mate?

It has been several years since I’ve had one and I have no real deep knowledge of them past I like them, but I do remember starting off with the Belhaven Wee Heavy. Odds are it’s not the snob’s preference, but it’s widely available and opened the gateway for me one summer. Hearty malty roasted caramel or hazelnut maybe, perfect weight to it without making you full or sleepy. Pretty sure I like them so much because of the minimal hoppiness. God I wish I could remember the chocolatey perfection one. I’ll never forget the taste of that beer though.

I wouldn't mind at least tracking down the Belhaven at a specialty liquor store just to try it. 🤩 And if you do manage to find chocolatey perfection, definitely send a private message. Cheers mate.

  • Myself, personally, I really enjoy it and have no intentions of giving it up. It makes me feel good in so many ways.

  • Schneider Weisse Aventinus. 17oz bottles of 8.2% double wheat, about $5 a bottle. Tis the nectar of the gods. I drink a half bottle whenever I have a cheesesteak or pizza or hot dog. So not very often. Highly recommend!

  • I’m at the point where I want to stop for a while. I’ve never been problematic while drunk but after a 3 month break I became silly quick when I got back on it and now get some awful hangovers.

Hard for me to quit now, I tolerate the Mrs a lot better after a few whisky’s.

I use to suffer from night terrors, which I had accepted as something I would have to live with forever.
I was delightfully surprised they went away once I stopped drinking, only cause I only had about two drinks a day. It’s been a decade that I’ve had an episode, but I still can have a glass or two of wine every two or three weeks.

One or two drinks daily didn’t sound like much, but my perspective changed when I began to imagine substituting beer and wine with soda or juice.

  • I don't an issue with any substance. I'm lucky in that I can take almost anything and when I see the need just stop. I've been drinking whiskey regularly for the last 6 months, nearly every day. Just decided a few weeks ago I wanted to lose some weight and have a bit of a cleanse so I just stopped.

  • Well, things have changed since almost a year and a half ago. I still love my old-fashioneds and beer. I also have taken to long islands. :) I'm not too huge on wine, but if wine is offered I will have a glass. I also like shots of whiskey, tequila, and rum. Not all of these in the same sitting of course, lol. I'll choose one stronger drink followed by a beer.

As far as vaping goes, I'm still trying to quit. 😂 Fml, lol.

Yah I do the same. A little airplane bottle of whiskey followed by a tall can of something dark and sludgy. But then I mix in a small hit or two of THC and am noicely toasty / mildly obliterated with only half the hangover ;) Typically only do this once a month, except for vacations.

As far as vaping goes, I'm still trying to quit. 😂 Fml, lol.

I don't smoke or vape but I do like the lozenges for focusing on work. Ftw, lol.

About four or five drinks a year. Best in the summer with a friend. In the winter it is just depressing and inhibits my sleep so the hangover is twice as bad then. Nearing 50 now and weed oil is legal so it is an obvious transition as the aches and pains creep in. Had boozey fun in my 20s where hangovers were barely an issue but in my 30s it quickly seemed stupid.

    Pussy.

  • I don’t drink.
I used to drink a lot but seeing my mother in the process of drinking her self to death, made me quit.

  • What is your relation with alcohol?

my relations with alcohol are excellent – we like to hang together from time to time, but never becoming close friends.

words of advice for younger people: weed is so much better.

Overall yes, but can also be just as big of a problem as alcohol.

  • Alcohol was never my cup of tea, or tea for that matter. I’m a heavy McDonald’s Coffee drinker and is all I drink and my occasional Dr Pepper with my meals. That’s the only type of coffee I drink, I can’t even use household creamer & sugar, it needs to be the McDonald sugar creamer brand on the side. Alcohol is a drug just like heroin, opiates, cocaine, and meth. But since it’s legal to buy a lot of ppl don’t see it as dangerous compared to someone who does cocaine. If you compared an alcoholic with a drug addict (cocaine, opiate, meth user), then you wouldn’t think of the alcoholic as the same as the drug addict. You would look down on the drug addict more than the alcoholic. In reality or the way I see it is being an alcoholic is at the same level of an opiate, cocaine, meth addict.

I just want to hear different POV.

Do you want to quit drinking?
Do you want to drink less?
    Do you drink just OK?
Do you have rules about alcohol (ie: only the weekend)

    Thank you for sharing

A different POV to yours or something else?

    What are your thoughts?

Mine are that the questions you asked contain the words and phrases, quit, less, just ok and rules. Making decisions about your alcohol use is much easier from a distance. If it's hurting you then stop using it at those times. If you can't do that then you have your answer.

Alcohol, for people who never learnt how to self-soothe, can become a problem. We can learn how to do that in much healthier ways.

  • Alcohol fucked me up while making me feel great.
It’s so socially acceptable you get to do it all the time, everywhere. And while you don’t get aggressive, too drunk or it affects your work everything seems great ok. Not at all. I’m not going to get personal but the vicious circle is closer than you’d expect, hard to identify and extremely dangerous.

Heck yah. When I go a couple weeks without it, that first cup is insane.

It's been illegal at times/places too...

Yah if I had a social life or was obligated to do business (travel/meetings, that sort of thing) I could see myself getting too much into it. As it is though I just work from home and know so few people that I care to see. It is a great social lube as they say. But yah, once a month for me. The worst is how it kills my workout rhythm, like a little crater in my progress.

    As mentioned before:

    No alcohol
    No smoking
    No drogs
    No gambling

A lot of money saved for the addiction to apps iPads and other music gears!

Wish I had the time for a proper music addiction again, but alas I can work and do drugs. ;)

  • Alcohol is incompatible with my health and well-being. It took me a long time to realise that.

  • I’ve gone right off most booze the last few years, I can still enjoy a nice whisky or other tasty strong sipping liquor type thing, but nothing too voluminous or sweet, a half of Guinness is ok occasionally too, but my long love of ale has died…

Hehe. I tried those lozenges (well, Zyn pouches) to quit vaping. They are quite nice indeed. I still use them during gigs, but then I just go right back to vaping. A vicious cycle.

  • My relationship with Alcohol is ……Cordial .

  • The only alcohol I use is rubbing alcohol to clean my cannabis pipe 😏

  • edited February 25

I gave up alcohol in 2012. I don't miss it at all either.

Actually, when I say I gave up alcohol, it's more like it gave me up. My body just couldn't take even the tiniest amount of the stuff in the end, just went right off it, and the less I drank, the bigger the hangover became. It's been a wonderful 12 years of freedom, so many kinds. I highly recommend it (giving up, not drinking!).

  • Used to drink a lot of beers and wine. Now I do mostly only infrequently and socially. Ever since legalization in Canada ;)
