I thought they were all that way so far? 😛

All my friends keep telling me to be patient, they're building this whole new world for future seasons. But they world was already there in GREAT detail thanks to the books and the movies. They need something to actually HAPPEN soon, we're like halfway through the season already.

Yeah, it’s a little frustrating that it’s being built up over so long.

Also I hope there no more of the dumb plot elements like the mithril one. That was the worst part of any of the episodes so far by a long way.

  • Finished watching the first season last night.

I’ve watched the entire season on a projector with 150 inch screen and a good 5.1 surround system. Visually and audibly it is stunning. It looks and sounds like middle earth. Mostly the characters and actors are great but the writing. Jeez 🙄. Why is the writing so bad. Proper cringe moments in last nights season finale.

I’m actually starting to actively dislike Galadriels character. Did the people that wrote this never see the movies or read the books.

What an absolute waste. Kinda makes me a bit mad when I think about it.

  • Most of it was awful, just boring, but I did quite enjoy the last couple of episodes at least when it finally got going.

  • I struggled to stay awake until the last episode. It was a decent ending, but it took WAY too long (the whole season) for anything exciting to happen.

Also, the Harfeet are annoying AF. I hope they are the first race Sauron wipes out or leave on an epic quest to find their long lost leader Jar Jar.

  • It was just shockingly bad. So much craft and talent frittered on turd-polishing. There was an extraordinary piece in The Hollywood Reporter whose narrative was that the writer–showrunners had sought and won the gig for their love and respect for the material. It's dispiriting to think they, and the Tolkien estate, might actually have believed this, and thought that what they were serving up was a sensitive appreciation rather than a piano dropped from a crane on top of it. You heart does go out to the cast and crew whose miserable task it was to get the pig all lippied up in makeup. Particular grudging respect for Markella Kavenaugh as the Harfoot lead, who you realise with slowly mounting horror is absolutely brilliant and it's just her character that makes you want to gnaw your own head off.

"...a piano dropped from a crane on top of it..."

I want to see that on an ad for this series.

This ! It’s just horrible crap.

This guy pretty much summarized it perfectly.

  • LOL, that guy is really upset about this show. 😂

For those of us who enjoyed it and are looking forward to next season, ratings are in and they’re great. Can’t wait to see the new budget, improvements and how the story continues to develop 🍿

I'm not sure how trustworthy the Nielsen ratings are these days, but hopefully the show will drastically improve in the second season. Bringing Peter Jackson onboard as a consultant would be a nice move.

A man can hope. I doubt Jackson would return considering what he achieved with the material already. His interpretation was complete and we’ve experienced it.

I look at shows like an app with each episode being a dot update and each season a version upgrade. Amazon has resources, access to talent and sort of even has a track record for delivering. We’ll see.lol

However, I have no emo connection to the source material or its author so it’s even easier for me. It’s simply a good way to unwind and enjoy my home theater investment for an hour.lol

In the end, it's just entertainment. Some people just happen to take their entertainment far more seriously. ;)

  • There are some aspects of it that horrify me as a Tolkien fan, but overall I enjoyed it.

On the plus side: exploring the earlier life of Galadriel based on hints that Tolkien provided (particularly in his letters), events surrounding the Numenoreans, Sauron coming to power.

On the negative side: Ewoks - sorry, I mean Harfoots, giving mithril magical powers, changing Sauron’s back story so much.

Also some truly bizarre and ridiculous things like suggesting that a silmaril somehow found its way into a tree.

Hopefully following seasons will get better scripts.

  • Despite the flaws of season 1, I was entertained and will be back for more, because I just can't help it.

Me too. I can definitely look beyond the flaws as there’s a lot of good things I have seen.

  • As I just watched the last episode of season 2 yesterday I was going to comment on another thread but then remembered this one.

The more I watch it the more I despair at how little respect is shown for Tolkien’s work. It’s inevitable that with so much money spent on it there’s going to be an amount of playing to whatever keeps people watching, but that finale was terrible.

While Morfydd Clark is a good actress, she is constantly given the biggest load of shit for scripts, and kudos to her for at least making something out of it.

In general the script writing is atrocious, but it’s becoming more and more detached from Tolkien’s world with each episode. They now want us to believe that Gandalf got the name from hobbits in the Second Age, despite there being a full description in LOTR of how he got his name in the Third Age? I can’t believe how Elf maidens that Galadriel helped escape were portrayed as a bunch of girly girls rather than warriors. When did elves roar and cheer like a bunch of football fans when Gil Galad raised a sword?

Not sure I’ll bother with the next season if there’s no sign of improvement.

  • Wish I’d never seen this thread lol. Luckily I wasn’t here the first time around and missed it. Sometimes, I really must ignore some threads, but the more I read, my morbid curiosity took over.

I won’t mention or discuss why, because I know the results of mentioning such things on this site. I will go carry on making some music for the next SOTMC. This comment is just my mind leaving a stamp on what I’ve just read, so that I can now go and leave it here and not soil my mind with such things again.

I know by writing this, someone will comment, but any comments are easily ignored and the ignore button on here works so well lol.

I feel the same but I read that they are changing the writers for the next season so I’m holding out hope that it improves things.

Not really but hope springs eternal and all that

    😂

Unfortunately that might be the case. The scriptwriting has been truly dreadful, but it would probably benefit from a top to bottom clear out.

  • I decided not to bother with this season. The level of disrespect the show runners/writers showed for the first season killed it for me. I really don’t know why you’d spend this much on a show and not employ people who love the material.

    Absolutely correct.

  • @Gavinski said:
Definitely. Herman Hesse for example is a writer whose works I loved as a young adult / uni student, but when I revisited them in my thirties I felt they lacked sophistication on multiple levels. I haven't read LOTR since my teens - when I probably read it a few times and haven't revisited as an adult. I wonder what I would think of it now.

I call Hesse, Vonnegut, Kerouac, etc. “gateway authors”
When you look back at the work as an adult, you do judge it more clearly. However, they have proved essential for introducing younger readers to the idea of literature.

  • I don’t mind they aren’t sticking 100% to Tolkien’s material, it can be tedious for those who aren’t fans. Still, they make elves who have lived thousands of years seem like total freaking clueless idiots over and over. That’s what bugs me.

Well said. There were so many lines of dialogue in the first season which severely sprained my eyes from all the eyerolling. Then I gave the second season a shot but I finally tapped out. I'd be ashamed to have my name attached to this series, except if I was an art director or production designer.

    Yes. It looks beautiful.

I wouldn’t mind if it was just changes to make it work better as a TV show rather than a book, but it contradicts Tolkien in so many ways, and doesn’t follow the spirit of his writing.

Definitely yes to the way elves are portrayed - the movies were far better at capturing the nature of elves. I feel sorry for many of the actors who have such garbage for scripts as I’m sure many of them would do well with more Tolkienesque scripts.

Another thing I forgot - Tolkien notes Galadriel being very tall. Cate Blanchett was a good choice there, so I don’t know why they cast someone who is much shorter in this show.

  • Nearly every decision made regarding this show's script and characters is completely baffling. I don't know if it speaks to the quality of the screenwriters or the people/person (?) at Amazon signing off on this mess.
