Inherited Damages, a McD and JanKun cinematic collaboration

A few months back, @McD posted on the forum a very inspiring composition written for piano and cello.
He kindly sent me the files and gave me total freedom to work my way on the arrangement. This is my first attempt at orchestral cinematic arrangement.
It is probably questionable in an academic way since I'm a total beginner but I am pretty satisfied with the result. I think it could have been a lot worst for a first time..

It could be a soundtrack for the next James Bond mock up movie, McD suggested a title like "Possibly Violent" I thought about something like "Too Busy To Die Today" 😜

I am not singing this time, but a bunch of songs are on the way.
Feedback are always welcome. It is pretty short listen but, I hope, an intense one.

We live in a strange time full of uncertainty where we witness fascism and Mercury rise. Meanwhile, we also have the power of a symphonic orchestra at our fingertips.
Yeah, definitely a strange time...
100% iOS.

All the best.

Here is the original version from @McD

  • wow, Im in!
orginal is no questionable, extention is more hollywood like or netflix, both could be in movie, no comparable, different qualities, simple is very pleasure to hear, extended is more agressive
    but
    oryginal version remind me movie
    Les compagnosis’d Eleusis

  • It works very well, the slight dissonance in parts of your version adds a lot of tension and feels very cinematic. The orchestral percussion is good as well, and it builds up beautifully.

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed both versions. They are very different indeed ! @McD did another version using some of my arrangement to his liking. He might share it with us.

I am French but never heard about "Les Compagnons d'Eleusis". It was released 3 years before I was born. Is it famous in your country?

    Salut Richard et merci!
Really glad you enjoyed it. A lot of dissonance and tension on this track indeed, barely resolving at the end... As you pointed out recently on another thread about music theory, music mainly relies on tension/resolution.
Recently I listened to some of Scott Walker latest releases. The album "The Drift" really stood out. Listening to it was almost a traumatic experience. Pure tension all along both musically and lyrically. In this context even short moment of silence or quiet passage don't resolve anything... Maybe that's where the tension in this track comes from. 😉
I'd be glad to try to incorporate this kind of classical elements into some of your music. I am sure it could sound really great, I am thinking especially about a song like "I'm On Fire" (still my favourite of yours).

Probably Im the only one and my brother, who remember this old and little scary tv-series. But it is a little OT. 100% iPad production is achievement when music quality also goes with emotions like here. Congratulations!

  • Stunning! I watched the James Bond movie last night and this would fit right in.

    100% iOS.

Can I ask which apps you used?

  • I have purposefully avoided using the word 'awesome' because it has lost it's meaning. I will use it now. Awesome! This is quite beautiful. The big stuff at 0:50 gave me a chill. Don't give much thought to the 'academics'. They are mostly politically correct and dead boring. The best stuff comes from people like you and @McD. I will be buying StaffPad this weekend and hope to be joining you both in some collaborations. Great stuff. Make more!

  • Brilliant! This sounds like something Marc Shaiman would write. :)

  • Definitely enjoyed both versions. The original is more understated but there is beauty in its simplicity. Your version adds so much dynamics. From around 1:10 to the end the power and emotion is really special. Great collaboration!

  • Very enticing and melodious music.
And the adventure vibe is on the air.
I can sense the thrill and suspense in the instruments.
Very well presented and well played.

I don't totally agree with you because the community of iOS musicians in this forum counts such a huge number of talented musicians from different generations and in so many genre, able to create beautiful and emotional tracks. From the jazz wizardry of @LinearLineman and @Gravitas to the songwriting devoted like @richardyot @tahiche and @ReneAsologuitar , the groovy @Daveypoo, the stellar @echoopera, the ambient experts like @Svetlovska @rottencat and @jwmmakerofmusic and the talented and too discreet @DavidEnglish
, the unclassifiable and ecclectic @Paulieworld @McD the sound designers like @Spidericemidas and @RedSkyLullaby who offered us so many invaluable presets banks for our synths, and so many more... What I am trying to say is that there is already A LOT of quality and emotional music made on iOS. And in a way we owe this to our Gods @Michael and @j_liljedahl who created the audio protocols that helps to glue all those wonderful apps together and once again @Michael who maintain this 99.9% of the time friendly place for us to hangout. I am getting OT again 😀.

Anyway , thank you for the kind words, it means a lot.

The orchestral part was created inside Staffpad which is truly an amazing app for composers. You can check on YouTube. There is some really seriously good s... made with this app. Let's be honest, it is a pricey app if you add up 3rd party libraries for each sections. But I always wanted to put my hands on good sounding orchestral ensemble sounds and somehow always felt frustrated with what we have on iOS, except SWAM apps which are truly amazing but demands either a good MPE controller or deep CC editing. Staffpad is in music notation and requires an apple pencil. You need a bit of time to get used to handwriting recognition, but once you pass this phase it becomes a truly intuitive tool for composing.

For this track, I first built the arrangement on @McD piano and cello version and tried to expend the dynamic range and added harmonies and counterpoints . I then exported the Piano part from staffpad as MIDI file into Cubasis3 in an attempt to humanize it a bit by slightly shifting the note timing and changing the velocities and make use of the sustain pedal and sympathetic string resonance from Ravenscroft and I also layered my favourite felt Piano in Decentsampler to fatten the low end. Then I imported the piano audio track back inside staffpad and panned each sections and added the in built reverb to mock up the real positioning of an orchestra. I could have exported all audio stems in Auria to improve the mix, but it was a bit tedious (there are so many instruments...) and I found the result was already satisfying at least to my beginner's ears.

I am definitely wondering what a symphonic orchestra will sound like in your hands !

Wow, that is a great compliment! Thank you sir !

  • Impressive stuff and, yes, I can certainly hear John Barry touches in the swoops and descents after the percussion hits. And you did this all from score making software? You must be a proper musician! Kudos to both you and @McD.

  • Man, this is great! 🙌🙌🙌
    I want a collab! 🙋🏻‍♂️

  • You got a good team there 👍👍👍👍🥳

  • A dark convoluted French thriller from 1960 starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jeanne Moreau.

    Opening credits, @McD.

    Closing credits, @JanKun.

    Great job both of you!

  • Absolutely fantastic work. I love both versions. Huge kudos to both of you. And reminds me of a comment on a recent video I made where some guy said “When Hans Zimmer starts making music on an iPad, I will”. Well, hello…..the iPad is capable of so much more than many of the classic electronic / movie soundtracks of the past. Again, hats off to the both of you 🎩

  • Also up for collabs btw! Especially midi tracks that I can use to demonstrate new apps. Anyone interested, throw your midi my way, if I use it I will of course credit you and give a link to your site / SoundCloud / whatever.

Thank you for taking the time to listen and for the kind words. @McD initial composition is really beautifully written so it was a real pleasure to work on it. It almost felt like painting and adding colours to accentuate each passage. Again, thank you for the listen.

Thank you for listening and for dropping a few gentle words. Like many people on this forum, I feel in love with your soulful playing and singing. I hope that one day you'll adapt some Otis Redding songs, secretly hoping to hear you sing "Try A Little Tenderness". I envy your recording environnement always full of guitars. Is it your shop? If so, everyday must feel like a daydream. Thank you.

Thank you for the kind words. Drawing comparison with John Barry is one of the best compliment I could receive. I had him in mind while working on the track. He is probably my favourite soundtrack composer, with Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat.
This was done in Staffpad, a powerful scoring app. I had to brush out my poor notation skills. I now regret not having taken more seriously my classical guitar teacher advice a long time ago. Stupid and stubborn brat I was 😉. But better late than never.
I am not sure what you mean by "proper musician". Is there really such thing? Everytime I hear some of your tracks I always consider your work as a "proper" act of creation of a "proper musician", thoughtful and inspired by dark literature and long forgotten stories. Man, your create very deep music. Ambient and drone is a "proper" art form when done soulfully like you do.

I have been dreaming of a Collab with you and @richardyot for quite a long time already. I believe the 3 of us share the same love for many artists and bands from the 90s and 00s. I am sure we could come up with interesting things (at least for us😉)

And please keep on greeting us with your magical shamanic ambient!

    Hi Gavin!
Thank you for dropping by !
Hope you and your eyes are doing great in China. Still on lockdown? Japan got slightly better but this mask thing is still terribly annoying!
Glad you enjoyed the tracks! It was a lot of fun working on this beautiful @McD 's composition.
Being one of the pioneers who fully integrated music technology in film scoring, Hans Zimmer most probably already has had his hands on staffpad. Is he using it on regular basis? Who can tell? maybe when he is on the go? cause Staffpad is really a powerful tool to quickly sketch ideas with instant playback. But since he is an experimented composer, he most probably build up a good part of his incredible orchestrations deep inside his head and take a few notes. He is truly one of the greatest soundtrack master of our time.

    Anyways open to Collab!
